We are almost there! Look out little buddy...somebody be droppin a rock on ya real soon!
I just picked up Saturday's mail and guess what! The paperwork to sign for Schlitzie's grave and stone have arrived!
I am going to call the cemetery tomorrow because I have a question about the stone. There is a diagram of it and it is divided into thirds. The top third and middle third says "Blank", and then the bottom third says SHILITZE SURTEES with Sept. 10, 1901, a small cross, Sept. 24, 1971.
I need to call and correct the spelling of his first name. I am going to have them spell it Schlitze as that is how it is most often spelled when he is listed, not as Shlitze as it is on his death certificate. Also, I know he is buried with 2 others, but if we are required to leave a space for the other 2 people, I want Schlitzie to have the top space. I think he deserves top billing.
I will mail out the contracts after I speak with Sylvia, and I hope to do so tomorrow (Monday).
Hopefully 8 weeks from now it will be ready. I need to see if the cemetery will send me a picture after it is placed. I can't wait to see it!
I am still accepting donations if anyone is willing or able to donate. We are almost there! The total amount as of today is $310.00!
Done!

Colicky - I just sent my donation but forgot to add in a comment in the payment what it was for, so to save any further confusion, I was realmindmetal@yahoo.com for $10
Just sent my small contribution.
I'm wondering if any of us could make it there on the day they install the headstone.
Be nice to have a little service, maybe a "one of us" chant![]()
We gotta be gettin' closer!
Can we get an update on the total?

chanting "one of us" is meaningful on MANY levels. quite fitting.
I'm there, when the stone gets delivered. I'll show up, camera in hand, if I get a day and time.
Yay!

I think it would be very fitting if Scott were there...Without him we wouldn't have come together to do this anyway...GO SCOTT GO!

Lots of news everyone!
BAD NEWS
I spoke with the cemetery and unfortunately we can not change the grave stone the way I would like to. Because Schlitizie is sharing the grave with two others, if we want to place a stone we must save 2 spaces for the other two people in the grave in case anyone ever wants to pay to have their names added. We also cannnot change the order of how the names are listed. Schlitzie was buried first, so his name is placed last on the stone. So the upper and middle third will be blank, and Schlitzie will be listed on the bottom third. The inscription will be
Schlitze Surtees
Sept. 10, 1901 (small cross) Sept. 24, 1971
GOOD NEWS
The cemetery has promised to call me with the info on when the stone will be ready and when it will be placed so if anyone wants to be there they can do so. I signed the contracts this afternoon and have a check for the total amount of $378.37 ready to be mailed out in the morning. So in about 6-8 weeks the stone will be ready.
GREAT NEWS
We have reached our goal of $378.37! We raised $403.00 with the last of the donations coming in this afternoon. We had contributions from mostly Find A Death members, but also one from another website that heard about us, and from some of my coworkers. Thanks again to everyone! This has truly been a world wide effort, with contributions coming from all over the globe! I am planning on sending the additional $24.63 we raised to Scott so he can place flowers on Schlitze's grave when he goes to photograph his grave marker. I think that would be a nice way to celebrate our accomplishment! I will be editing my earlier post and removing my PayPal info since we have reached our goal.
I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout this project. It is amazing what people can accomplish when we all work together. We have done a wonderful thing and I feel we will be blessed for doing so. I am honored to have participated. I also want to give a special "Thank You" and hugs to Scott for allowing us to use his site to do this, and for the great bio on Schlitzie. If it hadn't been for Scott, we never would known Schlitzie had been forgotten.
I can't wait to see his stone! When I get the date that the stone will be placed, I'll let everyone know!
YEAH!!! That is sooo cool!...
