    David Lean

    Sir David Lean KBE (March 25, 1908, Croydon, Surrey, UK - April 16, 1991, London England, UK) was an Academy Award-winning English film director and producer, best remembered for big-screen epics such as Brief Encounter, Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India. In 1999, the British Film Institute compiled a list of the 100 favourite British films of the 20th century. Five movies by David Lean appeared in the top 30, three of them in the top five. Lean was voted 9th greatest film director of all time in the BFI "Directors Top Directors" poll 2002.
    He died of throat cancer.
