Now, now, in one of those articles we've posted about the exhumation, he does say he was considering donating it to the Rock Hall. I still can't believe Jr. is all bad...

Jr. is a good talker but until he does what he says, don't believe anything.
Does anyone know of documentaries, new or old, on in the next few days with the 50th anniversary of the crash coming up? Or if that movie is actually going to get released?
I don't know of any that's going to be aired before the 50th but I know PBS will be in Clear Lake so there will be something on there very soon. I also know some guys who will be finishing up their documentary this weekend as well, but their's will be a DVD release only.
Man, I wish I had one of those Death Hag stickers that day.
Anyways, here are the pics:
Its worth the visit if you can go, the museum is well set up and the gentleman running it is super smart about Texas music history.
Thanks for posting the pics.. they are haggishly delightful.
Wicked pictures madmravyn, thanks!!!!
Thanks Gary -- I was wondering what ever happened with that doc they were making. I can't believe history channel or A&E or some of those aren't doing some new docs for the anniversary -- I always thought this would be a big deal everywhere, not just in Clear Lake.
Oh, and wicked cool coffin pics! I really wish it would end up in the Rock Hall here in Cleveland so I could see it myself!
Very Sad!
The whole exhumation story fascinates me, and I sure do hope the photos do someday surface. But right now, I'm all about the midcentury lines on that casket. That's spiffy.
Got him too.
Excellent pics, thank you!
The guitar thing, there was supposed to have been an actual floral arrangement made into the shape of a guitar at the funeral home that was sent from Elvis Presley.
Thanks for all the info on the Big Bopper and the amazing Photo's .. appreciate it all !! learned a lot ..
Wow! This is something. It feels surreal that his coffin is actually sitting there.
I think the phone being placed there was a tribute to one of Boppers biggest hits Chantilly Lace. The song starts off with the ringing of a telephone. He also used phones as props when he performed that song.

Very interesting pics! Thanks for posting madmravyn and Screwtape.
Are people upset because he had the casket open and had the xrays taken ? I am not sure but if my dad had been famous and he died before I ever got to see him and had an opportunity to see him I may take that chance. His kids didnt grow up easy with the step father and maybe it put some of his ghosts to rest by doing this. I read that he actually wanted to have the orginal casket crushed so no one could get a hold of it..I dont know I feel for this guy somehow. Even if he is making money off of his dad isnt that his birthright? Maybe we are being a little tough on the guy?

Yes, I thought of that not long after my post, but at the moment seeing the photos it looked odd to me.
OK, so how long before "The Little Bopper" shows photo's of his father in his casket for profit!?!?!?
Hasn't the original casket already been sold?
Neat! I read Dr. Bass's book that included the chapter on this exhumation but the photos weren't as extensive.

Great link !!! I was seriously hoping they would show him in the casket. I'm sick.... I know!!!
I dont begrudge a son 'meeting his father' as it were, but the whole thing still seems very weird and 'publicity driven' to me.
In the photos showing the crash site with the plane wreckage, etc. Are those 3 bodies lying around in the snow nearby. One appears to be on the other side of the fence which I think I read on here that JP landed on the other side of the fence. I am guessing these are the bodies face down on the ground.
BTW - this is my 100th post. Shall I expect something amazing to happen?????

Buddy and Ritchie are the bodies lying near the plane. Buddy in the lighter coat and Ritchie the darker one. Bopper was thrown 40 feet over the fence and his clothes ripped off. The pilot was entangled inside the plane.
You're welcome. I recently saw a photo of the crash site where you could see the pilot's boot sticking out of the plane wreck but I haven't been able to find it since I last saw it. I've looked high and low for it!
What I find rather sickening is the fact that the coats of Buddy and Ritchie look to be just about all that's left. Notice how flat they lay, like there's not even much of a human body there. Ugh.
Sorry you can't find that one. Anyhow as I was looking through those crash photos I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I hate it when photos are black and white and from a distance. Your mind plays tricks on you. I stared for the longest time in disbelief. I had thought to myself if those were bodies they certainly had the look of a body being piled-drived onto the ground at a horrendously fast speed. They looked crumpled and broken. Do we no which one is which?? I know that JP is the one lying on the other side of the fence but what about Richie and Buddy?
Never mind, I just reread your post Gary and you have already answered that. Its the hag in me, my eyes glaze over and I stop thinking clearly....

This is all so very interesting, but the ironic thing is that I canNOT STAND that blasted Chantilly Lace song! If it comes on the radio, my finger on the tuning button of another station is almost faster than my foot on the brake if a kid runs in front of me!
I can't help but notice that bops casket appears to be on display outside on a patio or something. I am guessing that odor is likely still a problem if kept inside a poorly ventilated space. Ever gone into an old abandoned house - smells so musty or something like that. If you take items from that house the smells fills whatever space you put that item into. They can clean it up all they want, they won't get that kind of stench completely out.
The more I think about this casket business the more stupid it sounds. I am all for memorabilia and being a death hag I love the idea that this was his casket for 48 years. But having said that, it really is starting to seem so very stupid to me. Why on earth did they need to give him a different casket. I know they said it was to better preserve him going forward or something like that, but hey I think the old one was clearly doing its job. The exhumation was to move him to a different spot, they conducted an autopsy to rule out any old myths, but after that they should have placed him back in HIS casket and laid him to rest. This Bopper jr guy is ridiculous. How he ever sold other people on this idea and had a group of individuals helping in this endeavor is beyond me. Not knocking their participation in the viewing or exhumation. Just the "let's place him in a new and improved casket" as some sort of tribute. Nope, just seems wrong, wrong, wrong. Don't like Boppers kid at all, even without reading about him being a dickhead, just because of this. I want to say it is like abuse of a corpse or something which I know isn't what happened here but that is what it feels like to me.

This is a little off topic from the current discussion, but i live just a couple blocks from the Riveside Ballroom in Green Bay where the winter dance party was the night before they were at the Surf. This monument is in front of the building. It was made by the same guy that made the statue that is at the crash site.
p.s sorry about the quality. There is a walking trail right behind my house that goes around the ouside of the riverside and I took the picture with my cell phone one day while out for a walk.
this is the outside of the building. one of the only original ballrooms that they perfomed at that is still in exsistance. They still have concerts and you can have wedding receptions there... how cool would that be!
Wow, I like the statement that statue is making, to me!They look like "cutouts" of Buddy, Ritchie and Bopper. Kinda like they're there in spirit, you know what I mean? Great pic, thanks SassyMonkey!
"So many faces in and out of my life. Some will last, some will just be now and then. Life is a series of Hellos and Goodbyes, I'm afraid it's time for Goodbye again. "
To answer the "no shoes" question, in the funerals I've been unfortunately involved in, the funeral directors recommended not putting shoes on the bodies because the feet tend to swell over time. You can put shoes in the casket, but it's not a good idea to put them on the feet. That's what we were always told, anyway.
I don't know if this has been posted on here, but fox news is saying the casket is probably not going on ebay. Here's the article:

Thanks Sassy! I had not heard of this monument before, thanks again!
BTW, I used to go to the Winter Dance Party every year down at the Surf back in the 1990's and bought all the famous "green Bay Photos" of Bussy, Ritchie and the Bopper from that couple who took them that night. Their names escape me now, the girls were twins and one of their dates that night (she married him after) was a photog.
Gary will probably remember their names. My pics are in a box somewhere, I should dig em out and frame em!
Hmmmm....I am sure there are a few takers here. I don't like odors (smell sensitivies quickly lead to vomitting...very unpleasant) so it would exclude me from this wonderful experience. BTW - welcome to the board Reverend, hope you enjoy the good people here at FAD. No subject is off limits (as long as discussed with respect for other posters) and no matter how weird you might think your haggish interests are...I guarantee there are others here who share your enthusiasm.
