It was taken in New Orleans in 1986 shortly after he was diagnosed with Colon and Prostate cancer which would kill him the next year

No, not a humiliation, but just to expose all the bullet wounds. Those coroner photos were never originally intended for publication, just documentation for the authorities. They usually photograph dead bodies, nude.

He passed out and fell off stage about two months prior to this performance and received rather big bruise on his forehead.

It was this performance that he died as soon as he finished singing "Tiptoe..." Miss Sue got up from the audience and helped him backstage, where he collapsed. He had type 2 diabetes, and CHF. These two things ultimately caused his heart attack (plus that fact that he didn't do as doctors suggested).

Here is Daniel Webster four months before his death in 1852. Three days before he died a very drunken Daniel (he would drink a quart of whiskey before noon each day for 50 years!) got on his buckboard to ride to town. He lost control and fell out of the wagon at high speed and the back wheel rolled over his head. He died three days later of brain swelling.

He was still newsworthy as a corpse as it was stolen by ransomers. The ghouls were caught and Chaplin was re-intered with a couple of tons of concrete.

What a wonderful pic... he looked so happy...i recently saw that film about him. Boy it was sad - the pic at the end made me think he died within nature - a way he wanted.

Ive always found this story quite fascinating. Where on earth did they keep the body while they had it? In what state were Chaplin's remains by then?? Its beyong creepy to think about it...

Because Charlie had told her when he was alive, something along the lines of, "if my body is held for ransom, don't pay anyone, I'm dead, I wouldn't care", and so on. Kind of ironic?

Thanks Magnus. I remember reading that they asked for 600.000 first and then decided to ask for "only" 250000. And yes,it seems that Oona never even considered paying them.
