Well, it's complicated. Queen Elizabeth II is a "queen regent," meaning a queen who rules in her own right. A person who becomes queen because she marries the king is a "queen matrimonial." The title "King" has always gone only to a male ruler of the country - there is no such thing as a "king matrimonial." So... they had to call him SOMETHING, and so they made him Prince of something or other. I think his mother was a member of the Greek royal family somewhere in her family tree, so maybe he had a title already.

Same thing happened when Philip I married Mary I. SHE wanted him to have the title of King. Everyone else wanted him to go back to Spain. He didn't get to be King. Wah.

Those kids have enough pressure being who they are without the press hounding them about having a baby.

Curious timing that this landmark law was signed off on recently by England and the other 15 nations of the commonwealth i.e. that now the first born child of William and Kate will be eligible to mount the throne...be it male or female.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-equality.html

Of course there's still Charles then William as listed here:http://www.royal.gov.uk/ThecurrentRo.../Overview.aspx but I assume this list is pre-reform and that the eldest child of William and Kate would be stuck in there somewhere.

Personally I think they should make it simple and draw numbers.

It's about time they changed that rule! At any rate, it won't change a thing because Charles is still first in line for the throne (lucky for him that his sister's younger - she might want to make the change retroactive, otherwise!) and William comes after him, and then after William, William's oldest child. I think that after Elizabeth I and Victoria (and Elizabeth II) the country decided that maybe having a ruling queen wasn't such a horrible thing, after all!

In any event, I think Charles prospects for a short rule are high. Considering the Queen Mother's age when she died...101...and assuming the Queen does not abdicate in the next few years (highly unlikely), we're looking at Charles becoming king when he's in his mid 70's or older when his mother dies. Add to that Charles ain't exactly all that well liked by subjects and those in government, I'd think when the time comes for Charles to ascend, he'd have the throne for a year or so then abdicate to William, who would by then be at least 40, more like 45ish.

Then again, the Queen might have plans to abdicate soon after her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and a deal struck with Charles that he would immediately abdicate to William. After all, Elizabeth was only 26 when she was crowned and I think she prefers William over his father as king. You know, all this might make a good reality show.

The Queen will never abdicate. You see, unlike many countries, the Netherlands for example, the British monarch is crowned and annointed in a RELIGIOUS ceremony which is binding until death.

I agree Bidmor.I think you've summed that up well. I hardly know anyone who feels comfortable with Charles taking over.He still hasn't been forgiven for destroying Diana's life and cheating on her with horse face, and sneaking around behind Dianas back like some sleazy weasel .

William is much more likely to be welcomed and as Diana tried to show him the real world ,I think he'll do better.

thats just it. whether u like charles or not, he's the rightful heir to the throne, after the queen dies. lord knows he's been waiting long enough. i think he'll be good. diana was the first to stray, so don't be too hard on charles.

I think Elizabeth is enough of a traditionalist to refuse to abdicate, and to also refuse to allow Charles to abdicate in favor of William. Feelings don't really enter into it - whether or not she thinks William would be a better King than Charles doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Charles comes before William in the line of succession. There have been plenty of Kings and Queens who did not think the person who was next in line of succession was the right person for the job, but they've always bitten their lips and just let things be, for the most part. King George V (Elizabeth's grandfather) HATED the idea of leaving the throne to his son and heir, Edward, but he had to do it. (Edward, however, did not want to be king - this is Elizabeth's uncle who abdicated to become the Duke of Windsor when he married Wallis Simpson.)

That abdication struck horror in the hearts of the royals from that point on. That, I believe, is the biggest reason that Elizabeth would never abdicate. She remembered the shame and confusion of the whole thing, and I believe she's referred to it to address the question as to whether she would step down to let Charles (or William) move up.

Prince Philip has been taken to the hospital with chest pains. He's 90, not too surprising. Anyone have him on their 2011 death poll??

ScarletStartet, this topic has been merged here because this is the Royal Family thread. The below is quoted directly from the FAQ.

    a) Before posting a new topic, use the Search feature, found at the top of every page, to see if a similar topic has already been posted. If there is already a thread about the person or thing you want to post about, do not post another one. Even if you are talking about a new facet of a case, you are still talking about the same case, so keep it in one thread.

    b) Respect the forum's categories. Here are some rough guidelines:

    ACTORS AND ACTRESSES
Only for people that were most famous for acting and are already dead.

    MUSICIANS
Only for people that were most famous for singing, dancing, and/or playing a musical instrument and are already dead.

    BEHIND-THE-SCENES BIGWIGS
Only for people that were most famous for writing, directing, or other off-camera/off-stage roles and are already dead.

    OTHER NOTABLE FIGURES
For famous people that are already dead and absolutely do not fit into the above three categories: stand-up comedians, politicians, scientists, etc.

    ENTERTAINMENT
Talk about movies, books, television shows, plays, etc., and the people involved - even if those people are all or mostly dead. (Remember you are discussing the actual works.) Gossip about living celebrities.

    POLICE BLOTTER
Talk about both past and current crimes. Living criminals and the crimes they are responsible for go here. Also for victims who were never even a little famous until their deaths made the news.

    EVERYTHING ELSE
Talk that is primarily about current events, history, and this community's opinions, but don't put anything here if it fits in the Entertainment category or if it is mainly about any of Scott Michaels' projects (see below).

    DEARLY DEPARTED TOURS AND DVDS
Talk only about Scott Michaels' projects besides findadeath.com and this forum.

    FAD FEEDBACK AND SUPPORT
Comments and suggestions about findadeath.com and this forum. If you want Scott to cover a particular celebrity, do not post the request here. Instead, look for a thread in the one of the first four categories (for instance, if Tom Jones died but wasn't covered on the main site, look under Musicians). If there is no thread, start one.

Some people, like Frank Sinatra, fall under multiple categories, but if there is no existing thread, ask yourself what the person was best and more successful at, then start a thread in the appropriate category. If there is a Frank Sinatra category under Musicians, do not start one under Actors and Actresses to discuss his films. There is no reason to break up the Sinatra discussion like that.

If you post a thread that effectively duplicates another thread, or if you post a topic in the wrong place, send a Private Message to any moderator or administrator - particularly if you see her or him online at the time. Moderator names are bold and administrator names are italicized for your convenience. Additionally, all moderators and administrators are listed on the Forum Leaders page.

I like how the Sex Pistols celebrated the queens silver jubilee.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012...ilee-boat-trip

I dont get the celebration of the monarchy. These people are useless figureheads living in extreme luxury and possessing obscene wealth all the result from 100s of years of ruthless exploitation of disadvantaged people.

With all due respect, most members of the Royal family contribute significantly via charity work or service in the armed forces. These aren't just "figurehead" positions either. Prince William is now commanding search and rescue helicoptors, and Harry served recently in Iraq. Princess Anne is involved in her charity work, well past just simply donating and being a patron. Edward has worked in theatre and television for years.

They are certainly privileged, but they're well educated, they contribute socially and through the work force (probably a good deal more so than many of us "common folk"), and while the middle generation was definitely lacking in decorum, for the most part they've been more of a benefit to the world than the vapid vain and entitled folk that we consider "Hollywood Royalty". You fund them too, you just do it with your disposable income and not your taxes

I don't think they are useless figureheads at all. They are best PR Britain can ever hope to have. I love following the history past and in the making.

The Queen is a role model for doing the right thing. How many people can you think of today that take it on the chin and get on with it with grace and class? She doesn't bitch and complain on Twitter and that is enough to raise her to sainthood in my eyes.

Princess Anne should have been next in line to the throne. Sheesh, even I am scared of her

I met Princess Anne at a function in 2004 and she appears as strong-willed and unyielding as her image portrays. I came away with the feeling that if she was on the throne, anyone who wanted to muck around with dear old Blighty would have her to deal with first!
I must admit, as a teenager growing up near Liverpool in the early 1980s I didn't much care for the monarchy and, in protest during Diana's and Charles's wedding day, wandered aimlessly around the deserted streets & couldn't bear to watch it!
i am not a republican now, and although I can't say I'm a big royalist, I understand why we have a monarchy & like the fact its given our country stability whilst people in many other nations have, and do, suffer unrest and extremism. The Queen hasn't really put regal foot wrong in her 60 years on the throne, apart from a short while in early september 1997.
I have a few opinions of the other royals themselves, some unfavourable.

It's all about keeping the "Windsor" bloodline going...Windsor being a public name changed from the German House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (orig. Haus Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha) and the House of Wettin (also German) which were German dynastys.

No doubt some have heard of Phillip's German upbringing, association with the Nazi party, and his family having "inhibitions" regarding Jews and "jealousy of their success".

Isn't that kind of the point in going to a "swinger's sex party"?

Kate needs to eat a sandwhich or something. I saw her honeymoon bikini pic today.

    Way to skinny.

Wonder how she got to be friends with the sex party woman?

I'll bet she is Pwem .After reading a bit more about Kate's friend I wonder if the queen may encourage her to distance herself from her .It can't be good for the royal brand to have the future queen being mates with someone who runs orgies .She was also interviewed under caution in 2010 for posting about shooting immigrants and there were pictures of them together then looking very matey . "One is not amused " I can hear her saying ,with a corgi on her lap in her slippers ( bearing the royal crest of course )

    Dirty Harry

Well, it's all over the place. A naked Prince Harry caught in a Las Vegas hotel room with an equally naked woman. The British press are now all over it as well.

On one hand he isn't doing anything that a normal kid his age would do. On the other he should know by now the history of the British press and how it treated his mum.
