Yeah, you'd think, right??? That poor bear didn't deserve to be killed for hunting.

I may be wrong but I thought from the audio they could tell the bear drug Tim away and then returned for Amie. To bad she could not get away, for some reason I thought she might have been safe at the lagoon but maybe not.

Yep. They think her screaming brought the bear back because it viewed her as injured prey. Something was very wrong with that bear and her presence probably was viewed as competition for food.

I just watched the " Grizzly Man " movie, and I have to say " what an idiot ". He deserved everything he got and don't get me started on taking that girl in there with him. He seemed to give out very mixed messages, he wanted to protect the bears he didn't want anybody to go near the bears or their territory only HIM! Hello there are others out there with good intentions to. Frustrating movie, I just wanted to grab him and shake him.

I just watched it again too, and I wanted to shake the crap out of him for the way he talked and all that silliness towards the camera.

What was wrong with that guy.

I think if yuu are stupid with wildlife in any way (not just feeding, but also approaching, harassing letting your animals roam loose regardless if they get eaten or not), you should be charged with feeding wld animals.

I watched a documentary about him a few years back, with a lot of his own footage. I couldn't help but wonder if he was mentally ill. Not because he was interested in bears and wanted to find a way to be near them. Just because of the way he seemed to feel he communicated with them, and how he had no real understanding of what was going on around him.

The scene where he was pawing adoringly through the poop sealed it for me. He wasn't looking for information, he was so happy to have a handful of excrement that was still warm from being inside one of his favorite bears. I guarantee you, the screaming girls in 1964 wouldn't get that excited if you handed them a warm turd fresh from John, Paul, George or Ringo!

I sort of wondered if he was Gay, with the way he talked and came across. He may have died before he could come out...

We get plenty of these people around here year round. They want to come and experience the real wilderness(even during the winter). Majority of the time they have to send rescue groups to either try and find them or to go get their dumbasses.
Grizzlies and Moose (they do the most damage) come into town all the time and people end up getting attacked. This past summer a Grizzly came up on a little league baseball game, by the end of the summer there was around 7 different attacks just in the downtown area. Everyone I know around here carries a gun with them just about everywhere they go here.

Same here. When I was in YNP last summer, I saw the mama grizzly with the quad cubs. I was looking through a spotting scope from the other side of a river---close enough for me!

The ironic thing is bears died because of him. They killed at least two in the area while they were trying to get his body and figure out what was going on.

It was his arrogance and ignorance that just blew my mind. He had no idea what he was doing, and yeah I do think he was mentally ill.

    Timothy Treadwell

I didn't knew who Timothy Treadwell was, so started searching info about him. here's what i found :
Timothy William Dexter was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, amateur naturalist, eco-warrior and documentary film maker. He lived among the coastal grizzly bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska, USA, for approximately 13 summers.

Timothy Treadwell was a self-described "eco-warrior" who lived among Alaska's brown bears until he was fatally mauled in 2003. Treadwell grew up in New York, went to college for a time in Illinois and settled in southern California in the early 1980s. After a 1989 visit to Alaska he became enamored with brown bears (calling them grizzlies), and from 1990 he spent 13 summers camping in their midst, photographing and filming them and himself. When he wasn't hanging out with the bears at Katmai National Park, Treadwell was editing footage and promoting himself as the savior of bears who, it turns out, may not have needed his protection. By the late 1990s he was somewhat of a celebrity, having attracted People magazine, David Letterman and celebrity backers such as Pierce Brosnan and Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1997 he co-authored Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska, and in 1999 he was featured in the Discovery Network's Grizzly Diaries.

When I was 15, I went to Yosemite park with my older sister and my ex-brother-in-law. One day my sister and I were walking near our cabin when we heard people off in the distance calling "Bear! Bear"! It seemed pretty far away but we started looking around. It happened all at once when we looked up and saw a huge black bear breathing and panting heavily and heading right for us. Talk about total shock! We just started running and the bear started chasing. Suddenly, my sister let out an ear piercing scream and the bear dodged off to the side and ran off into the bush. We got the hell out of there. We no doubt did everything wrong, but this happened so suddenly and was so unexpected, we just didn't know what to do. A couple nights later, a bear tried to push the back door open on our cabin in the room where I was sleeping. I know it could have gotten into there if it wanted to. Thank god it didn't. I've never been back there since.

I would not want to be anywhere near any sort of bear ever unless it's already stuffed and on display in a museum. They are scary!!

I think he had addiction problems in his past coupled with mental health issues and he traded his drug addiction for his bear campaign. He thought he was helping the bears, but having them used to humans is the worst possible thing he could do to them. Simply because he was not out to hurt them doesn't mean that other humans wouldn't harm them. Not only that, but once the bear get used to not being fearful of humans, the humans are in even more danger from them than normal. The bear sanctuary in Alaska that he went to protected the bears. They certainly didn't need him in there causing trouble and costing two of the bears their very lives for doing what it is in their nature to do.

A friend of mine once asked me to join her for a weekend at their cabin, and I felt a bit hesitant, mainly because I've always been scared to death of bears. The next night I had the most vivid nightmare ever where my (third floor) doorbell rang and when I went to open the door, there was a huge bear that had come to kill me.

People always laugh at me if the subject comes up, but apparently bears do come to people's doors!! I'm so not leaving the city ever again... How you actually stayed at the cabin after that bear encounter is totally beyond me.

When it comes to TT, I watched the documentary with my family and we all thought that he must've been mentally ill.

I do not mean to make light of your fear, because it is definately valid, but I laughed at the bear ringing your doorbell to eat you. "Candygram..." And believe me I have VERY vivid nightmares. My husband has many a story of me talking, screaming, kicking, hitting, etc as I am half awake from a dream.

This was back in the 70s but a friend of my Dad took his five kids, with his brother (no wives) in a big motor home on a tour of Alaska. It was a fabulous and memorable trip for them and I am in touch with his kids and they still talk about it all the time.
They had one incident that really scared them though. They stopped in a rest area and while they were stretching their legs the 9 year old boy who had been asleep got up and exited the RV. They didn't know it when they did a head count and headed on and it was only when they stopped for lunch four hors later that they realized he was missing.
They contacted a state trooper there at that rest area and they said he literally went pale. He told them the previous rest area had a real bear problem, because of the trash from people stopping at the rest area. The thought of a 9 year old on his own for 4 hours and it was a time of the year when hours could go by between people stopping at the rest area.
The trooper called in a chopper and they took the boy's Dad back with them and when they landed the kid came out of the john. He had actually seen a bear and immediately hid in the bathroom. What if he had wandered off or the bear smelled him in the john? He would have been toast or at least pate' or carpaccio.
I think Tim and Anna put the bears in a terrible position and it was sad but not unexpected as a consequence.
I saw them give the watch he had been wearing to an old friend of his in a TV documentary. It was still working.
    regards,
    Mary

^^Sweet Jesus! That poor kid! I would be terrified!!^^

I grew up on the edge of the wilderness, and we were very bear aware. And wolf and cougar aware too. There is no way that anyone should assume these animals are anything other than wild animals that operate on instinct. You can't "befriend" a bear. You can't tame a bear. It's a bear!

I also am surprised that a 9 year old who grew up in suburban Cincinnati had a clue what to do. I would have been trying to feed twinkies to the bears had it been me at that age.
The kid grew up to be a Cincinnati Cop so I wonder if he was born with a survival instinct?

Absolutely fascinating story, but I do feel like the man was little out there, ultimately his undoing...

The audio ou there of him being munched is a fake so don't even bother looking for it. The guy was a real loser and huggin' bears got him into the spotlight.

He tried to give the impression that he was out there alone, but always had his girlfriend with him. She wasn't that comfortable with bears in the first place.

I'm surprised he lived as long as he did.

I think one of the officers that listened to the tape had to have counseling, yikes.

I read the tape was given to a female friend of Tim's. Wonder what she did with it?

i just recently learned about this guy and its very sad that two bears had to die because of him. i really think he would have not wanted that to happen. i do understand why they did it though. when i watched his movie last night, there were two parts that disturbed me, i was fore warned about the bear poop scene so it didnt bother me as much as it did when he got upset someone had wrote a message to him on a piece of log. that person was honestly just being friendly and he was seeing as a sign that someone was out to hurt him. i was like really? with him being surrounded by bears and he was only worried about people finding him. seriously? the other part that disturbed me was when the ex gf jewel got his watch from the guy and she put it on like it was nothing. i dont know why it bothered me but it did. i felt her emotions about getting the watch were a little weird, that watch was attached to an arm that was once living. i guess its the knowing how the watch was found that bothered me. can you imagine just looking for what happened and stumbling upon just a hand with a watch on it? omg i would flip. i wonder if the people who found them need counseling after seeing such a horrible scene like that.
