    Favorite, Classic, Male Movie Star

    well, the ? is also a very fine actor, Van Hefflin. but as Dennis Miller points out if you look at the picture it is clear that three of these guys have the Movie Star world by the shorthairs and poor Van is just standing in.

    Yep Van looks out of place.
    I always felt so sorry for Gable when Lombard died...he watched the fire of the crash from Vegas...so sad

    Van was a GREAT actor and if you see him in something like "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers," you'll note that his style has a very contemporary feel.

    I agree, Van is a great actor.
    But the other three were Great Actors and Movie Stars.
    For some reason, poor Van just looks out of place.
    Kind of like having Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, and Joey Bishop.
    Bishop was a famous comedian but he just never made it at that level in terms of fandom.

    Clark Gable was the greatest "male movie star" ever. Not actor, but movie star for sure. Judy Garland was the female equivalent.

    Van Heflin was the bomber in the great 70's flick "Airport". Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Helen Hayes, Tippi Hedren and Maureen Stapleton were also in it... Some bad acting, but still a good movie for a boring Saturday afternoon.

    TIPPI HEDREN was NOT in AIRPORT or any of the subsequent sequels;
    perhaps you're thinking of the late JEAN SEBERG who played the BURT LANCASTER character's admiring co-worker.

    JEAN SEBERG (1966)

    TIPPI HEDREN (1964)

    Anyone know the year that pic was taken? Gable and Cooper were near the end in 1960.

    I remember Van Hefflin as being the goto actor if you wanted a bad guy that didn't look like a bad guy. You know, one that was nice looking enough to be flipped into a good guy because of love. It is kind of a shame that he didn't gain the notierity as his fellow actors in this picture. He was a fine actor.
