Do they perform the National Anthem before sporting events in countries beside the US and Canada?

It would be nice to one day hear our anthem sung in a straightforward way once again--each note as originally written---minus the pop-singer improvisation that seems de rigeur these days.

That would be nice. Why must it be dragged out for an extra 10 minutes?

Wayne Messmer, the PA announcer for the Chicago Cubs does as fine a rendition as likely to be heard.

As an American and a hockey parent/fan, I'm sorry to hear that. without getting into politics, is it a hockey thing, or just general "boo"?

Some "fans" started it in Montreal around the time of
    the Gulf War.(I think)
But sadly you can still hear the boos in some Minor
    league hockey games.

l'm gonna try to work that into a conversation today

Yes that is true but Wayne + Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby
etc, understand they have to go to the US to make the
big money. You have to let them leave sometime.

A-fuckin-MEN. I hate all those silly and unnecessary flourishes and warblings! Our National Anthem brings me to tears every time I hear it sung, although not always because of national pride. Sometimes it's just painful to listen to when some jackass thinks it requires a new "spin" to sound fresh.

"oer the la-and of the FREE-YEE-YEE-YEE-YEE-YEE-YEE-YEEEEEEEEE

and the home of the-he-he brrrrrr-YAY-YAY-YAY-YAY-AAAYVE!"

Who the hell started that? Bring back Kate Smith!

I'm gonna lay some of the blame on Mariah Carey for popularizing that singing style.

It is only played here for international events such as the Rugby or Soccer, though I am not sure if I remember it at the Cricket, it is played during a Test I think, but it would only be on day 1 (they go for 5 days). I dont think I have heard it at the 1 day internationals (only during the World Cups) but not the Twenty/20s.

At national games such as in Aussie Rules, rugby league we dont play the anthem, the teams run out to their club songs. The Anthem is played at the Grand Finals only.

Isnt it terrible the way the 'pop' stars sing it? I loathe all that warbling and stretching of notes.

I get asked to sing the National Anthem several times a year, for patriotic events and have NEVER sung it any other way than what it should be. I just couldn't do it. Besides, my parents, uncles, and husband are veterans, and they would all kick my ass if I did it any other way.

No, not even the world cup. Funny thing happened at the world cup last year. The Chinese government built a stadium for one of the islands before the world cup and at the dedication ceremony they played the Taiwan national anthem. Shit hit the fan bigtime.

    haaaaa

I know that at the tennis a few yrs ago James Morrison played the wrong anthem for the Spanish - that was a show mozelle (aka schmozzle! sp?) Also once I remember that at the Winter Olympics they put on the AUSTRIAN anthem instead of the AUSTRALIAN one.. how hilarious!

    My sentiments exactly.

A tidbit on the national anthems of other countries: Whenever there are tons of ships from different countries, the base plays ALL their national anthems in the mornings. My husband tells me the same courtesy is not extended when they go to foreign ports

I will say, Rosanne's rendition was hilarious in a way becuase it lampooned all the overdone interpretations. But I guess it was too edgy and disrespectful, I wouldnt wanna see it more than once. She sure did get shit for it.

OK, Jordin Sparks lip-synched (lip sank?) the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.
It's normally sung live, isn't it??

Yes it is supposed to be sung live. I thought it looked like she was lip-synching (is that spelled right?) too.

I seem to remember, and I could very well be wrong, that back when
Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem for Super Bowl XXV
in 1/??91 the same issue came up.
It was explained that inside the stadium she was heard LIVE while a
recording was broadcasted to the rest of us.
She was ??singing along with herself? so it looked like lip-syncing.
What the crowed heard inside the stadium was different then what
    the rest of us heard.
