I'm a big fan of The Band.
Many years ago I read the Garth had a deal with the other members of The Band that they had to pay him something like $10 per month to act as their "Music Instructor".
Seems that Garth's parents had spent a lot of money sending him to school to study music.
When he joined The Band, he didn't want to tell his folks that with his expensive education he had joined a rock & roll band, so he told them he had found work as a music instructor.
