Taking this personally as I wrote one of the first profiles on Russell just after he'd joined Harry Connick Jr's orchestra in 1990 and begun his meteoric rise to greatness. Saw him live as recently as November of last year, my only regret being I didn't book the other 3 shows he did that same weekend. His performances were always dazzling and original. No cause of death announced yet, but 60 was just too damn soon.

Russell was supposed to appear at the DC JazzFest this past Labor Day with fellow musicians Ron Carter and Donald Vega. Ron and Donald closed out the festival with "There Will Never Be Another You", a third, empty chair beside them.
