To me, he was like those old-time music hall / vaudeville comics you recognized because he had one (or a few at the most) special acts that kept audiences laughing throughout the years. Much like Frank Nelson (probably most famous from The Jack Benny Show) whose distinctive voice kept him employed for decades.
