Indeed, I discovered that he had been ill when I read further on him. He announced it in about 2018 I think. I don't remember it. Actually, I appreciate that. I don't like it when the person keeps it a secret and dies abruptly, like Louie Anderson did.

He died from Cancer. He had Prostate cancer back in 2018 and it spread to his bones.

Marlee Martin accused him of sexual and mental abuse in her book. I haven't read it but since he died, a passage where she accused him of rape has been doing the rounds. He was also mad when she won the Oscar (He was up for one too but lost out) and flat out told her there were people who worked hard to earn it yet she got it. Another ex also accused him in the past as well.
