    Meredith Emerson

OK I searched and did not see a thread, but... this was something that came to light yesterday and right before bed I watched the news and
OMG I could not sleep last night..

Meredith Emerson, beautiful young woman, was hiking in a national forest somewhere in the SE, (GA. Maybe?) with her dog and dissapeared on Jan 1.. apparently they arrested some 60plus year old guy who led them to her body yesterday.. they discovered she was held ALIVE for 3 days (probably in his van), killed and UGH after her murder was decapitated..
This guy is suspected now in numerous other murders/missing people in SE national forests..what the hell is up with these people? geezus!

I believe she had her dog with her as well. I am one of those people who feel very safe when I'm out with my dog thinking that he will protect me. I guess that isn't always the case. It is a scary world when it is hard to feel safe anywhere. Even hiking away from others.

I belong to another forum where a good friend of Meredith was also a member. She started out posting that her friend was missing and she was very concerned. It went on throughout the search, finding her, and the funeral. It was heartbreaking to be part of the "inner circle", where she found out far too much about what happened to her wonderful, kind-hearted friend. It hit very close to home, since even though I never met Meredith or my forum friend, it felt like I had known them and suffered along with them.

People suck real bad. Why do people have to do stuff like that?

Some might be able to abduct me, or kill me but by God I'm at least taking an eyeball with me!! I hope she got some good ones in when she got ahold of the baton and knife

Gary Hinton was given life in prison for Emerson's death (yes, in GA) and Friday was sent to Florida to face charges of doing the same to another girl down there. Its been in the news still a good bit because he wanted to fight extradition saying his rights were violated. He's also suspected in the murders of a couple in NC.

Edit: Just found this on the AJC: http://www.ajc.com/search/content/pr...tlid=inform_sr
a rather chilling account of what he did to her.

Their second day together, Hilton set up camp in Dawson Forest, where they hiked for several hours. He insisted she was free, but he also said he told her he would shoot her and anyone around if she tried to get away.
"We took both dogs and went hiking along Shoal Creek," Hilton said. He said she was not bound while they hiked.
Does anyone else have a hard time believing this self-serving tripe? I mean earlier in the article they quote Hilton as saying that he couldn't keep up with her as they hiked up the trail shortly after meeting. This lady was a fighter, I feel that if she were indeed free and not bound, she would have hauled buns hoping that this guy couldn't hit a moving target if he did indeed have a gun.
I don't know, just thinking out loud so to speak.

I'm with you sunshine. Take out something. Fight like hell. Never let them tie you up or take you to the 2nd location.

It is such a tragedy that a person can not go and enjoy the beauty of nature without fear.

My daughter got so sick of me preaching this, I told her scratch, claw anything to keep from being relocated, But if he gets you in the car pull the wheel and hit the car next to you(if you are not on the freeway of course) Dive into the floorboard and push the gas hit the car in front of you anything to get noticed. A wreck has a lot lower chance of killing you than him.

Exclusive: Ralston wants GBI to fight Hustler request for Emerson photos

9:06 am March 8, 2010, by Aaron Gould Sheinin
Hustler magazine has requested, through Georgia’s Open Records Act, copies of documents related to the January 2008 murder and decapitation of hiker Meredith Emerson, but House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) is urging the GBI to deny the magazine’s request for crime scene photographs.
Ralston said this morning that he has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to deny Hustler, a noted porn publication, copies of the photographs that show the 24-year-old Emerson’s nude and dismembered body.
The House speaker also said Rep. Jill Chambers (R-Atlanta) will introduce legislation in the House today to clear up what Ralston said was a gray area in state law. Chambers’ bill will exempt from the state’s sunshine laws any request for crime scene photographs that, among other things, depict nude bodies.
“If Hustler wants to take us to court, let them take us to court,” Ralston said.
“I don’t know what the motivation of this magazine is to get these,” Ralston said. “I think it’s sickening and disgusting and vile to even make the request. I don’t see any value that can be served by having these materials released. It’s particularly troubling for the family.”
Ralston said he spoke on Sunday with Emerson’s mother in Colorado.
“They were, needless to say, extremely distraught over the possibility that this could even happen,” he said, adding that it’s his understanding the GBI denied the request for the photographs.
“I think it’s important to honor this young lady and her family and protect their family’s privacy,” Ralston said.
Bert Brantley, spokesman for Gov. Sonny Perdue, said it’s his understanding that Hustler requested more than just the photographs and that the GBI complied with the most of the request but did not release the photographs.
Emerson, who lived in Buford, was killed in January while hiking with her black Lab, Ella, in Dawson County. Gary Michael Hilton ultimately confessed to the murder and prosecutors agreed to not seek the death penalty against him if he would show them where he had left Emerson’s body. Hilton kidnapped Emerson on a Blood Mountain trail on New Year’s Day. He beat to her death and then cut off her head Jan. 4, leaving her body in the federal Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

I just read about the hustler request here: http://jezebel.com/5488541/why-does-...murdered-woman

I know that we death hags are some of the first to jump on crime scene photos, and Lord knows I have, but the idea of Hustler publishing these photos... it's completely icky.

She went down fighting. I sure hope she got in a few good kicks to his balls! Poor girl he had no trouble killing then decapitating a woman but he just couldn't kill the dog. I'm thinking the dog was able to get away from this a-hole and that's the only reason why the dog wasn't killed along with Meredith.

---I'm with you, Cat lady. There is indeed a line not to cross in there somewhere for each of us. Let me ask you this: if Hustler printed them, would you look at them? I'm afraid I would. Just being honest. I do hope they don't do this though, or are prevented. But I'd still look.

Georgia judge bars release of photos of hiker's nude, decapitated body

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- Photos of the nude and decapitated body of a murdered hiker, sought by a writer on assignment for Hustler magazine, will not be released, a judge in Georgia ordered Wednesday.

The decision came as state lawmakers considered legislation that would ban public release of graphic photos of crime victims. First Amendment lawyers say the legislation could have a chilling effect on open records requests.

    rest of story.

But think about what he said: ban public release of graphic photos of crime victims.

That is going to effect what we have here too.

Thats what the uproar is about I think. Because he works for Larry Flynt. If was a author of crime novels, people would not get so worked up. The problem is that it should not matter. Freedom of the press should not only apply to some outlets. If Selective censorship gets a foothold it will only grow.

That's cool, Jefe. I wasn't being a butt about it...plus, everybody knows I flip the "shoot 'em" line out often. I was thinkin' more or less about her parents and the thoughts that Hustler was trying to exploit the girl in some way...plus the crime is rather fresh.

But I see your point...and retract.

I have to admit I would look at the pics if posted or printed in the press. I think what bothers me is that it is Hustler wanting them. It kind of puts a different spin on the whole thing that makes me go "ewww". (don't know why or how to put into words).

BTW, Jefe, your avi is pretty freaky! LOL

I am personally glad they blocked the release of these photos. There is somethbing more than a little disquieting to me, as a woman/mother/human being that a pornagraphic magazine was seeking the photos. It is partly an issue of context....People purchase hustler for its pornographic content, not for the purpose of being informed on current events, literary purposes, etc. The unspoken feeling among those of us who are disturbed about the prospect of decapitated/dismembered/nude young women is that there are some people out there who would sexually fetishsize such content. It is as disturbing as the prospect of watching an authentic 'snuff film'. I am a fairly liberal person philosophically, but I see this as a public safety issue--as well as feeling that this young woman's family should not have to live in fear that their loved-one would be exploited in this way--more than a 'free speech' issue. As hard as it would be to survive the aftermath of such a horendous crime affecting a family, I can only imagine how much more heartache would be heaped on with the publication of the pictures. I may sound like a hypocrite for belonging to this site, but this is how I feel. I feel it was shitty for the person who put Nikki Catsouras' death photos on the internet. I mean there have been law enforcement officials, medics, etc. who have lost their jobs--as well as getting into serious legal difficulty--for releasing crime/death scene photos because of the issues I stated above, as well as privacy issues/human rights issues. etc.
I condemn no one for there feelings or statements, but this is just my take on the situation.

    Fultondyke, well put.

And as someone mentioned up thread, "Would you look?" yes I more than likely would once the photos inevitably made their way online.. but the fact that Hustler would be printing crime photos in between pages of spread muffs and crusty bangs, I don't see how their intent would be anything but to fetishize the horrific crime. And I do get the complications that come from my proceeding statement, but the whole thing still leaves a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I think because for me I'm don't look at photos of say... Sharon Tate with one hand down my pants "clicking the mouse"

Hustler's Request for Slain Hiker Meredith Emerson's Crime Scene Photos Denied

Posted by Kevin Hayes 1 comments

    Meredith Emerson (Personal Photo)

ATLANTA (CBS/AP) Hustler Magazine's request for the crime scene and autopsy photos related to the death of slain hiker Meredith Emerson has been denied by a Georgia judge.
Emerson's decapitated body was found in January 2008 in the woods of North Georgia. The 24-year-old Georgia University graduate was killed while hiking. Her killer, Gary Michael Hilton, is serving a life sentence for Emerson's murder. Authorities have linked him to at least three other slayings.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a statewide police agency, denied Hustler's request on Monday, calling the porn magazine's request "indecent." One Georgia lawmaker described the request as "vile" and "disgusting." Emerson's family filed suit against the GBI to halt any potential release of the photos.
And so now DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Dan Coursey has weighed in, denying Hustler's request, and saying on Wednesday that releasing the photos of Meredith Emerson to Hustler Magazine would cause "irreparable harm."
The reason for Hustler's request is unclear. On Feb. 25, Hustler Magazine reporter Fred Rosen asked for the photos as part of an open records request filed with the GBI. Rosen said in the request that he should have access to the photographs because it has been more than two years since Hilton was sentenced for the crime. Rosen also asked for Hilton's confession and Emerson's autopsy report, including the rape kit.

Drifter who beheaded nurse is sentenced to death by Florida jury

A 64-year-old man has been sentenced to the death penalty for the murder of a nurse whose beheaded body was found in a national forest.
Gary Michael Hilton, who is currently serving a life sentence for the killing of female hiker Meredith Emerson, was found guilty last week in the similar case of 46-year-old Cheryl Dunlap.

The headless bodies of both victims were found in forests where Hilton had camped in northern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle and the drifter's death sentence will be imposed by Circuit Judge James C Hankinson at a date yet to be scheduled.

Death sentence: Gary Michael Hilton will be executed after a jury unanimously recommended the death penalty for his murder of a nurse

'If there was ever a case for it, this was it,' State Attorney Willie Meggs said of the rare unanimous decision in a death case.

Dunlap's close friend, Gloria Tucker, expressed satisfaction with the jury's decision.

But she said even Hilton's execution wouldn't bring total justice in the case of her friend, whom she called Sherri.

'I don't think any family members got justice,' Ms Tucker said. 'He's no equal for Sherri. She grew up with a bad home life and grew up to be a lovely person.'

Victim: Cheryl Dunlap, 46, was found beheaded in a Florida forest

Hilton's defence attorneys had sought to persuade the jury that his unhappy childhood, a lifetime of emotional and drug abuse contributed to a 'perfect storm' that led to the killings.

'Mr Hilton was never able to connect with people, only his dogs,' public defender Robert Friedman said in his closing argument yesterday.
'No one gave him any sense of love at any time in his life.'

Hilton, who wore a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and silver tie, sat nervously for much of the day, rocking back and forth in his chair, bouncing his legs and chewing on his tongue.
In a police interview played for jurors during the three-week trial, Hilton said he regretted trying to make money by killing rather than robbing banks, but said that choice was partly because of 'rage against society, sociopathic rage against society'.

'Once you've taken someone you're either going to kill them or you're going to get caught,' Hilton told the investigators. 'But if you're already caught there's no use in killing them.'
Hilton is also a suspect in at least three other killings, two in North Carolina and one in Florida.
In 2008 he was convicted of killing Ms Emerson, a 24-year-old walker whose naked, decapitated body was discovered in the north Georgia mountains.
