Lee Marvin was great in The Dirty Dozen. I heard John Wayne was
considered for the role of Major Reisman but I can't see anyone else
portraying him but Lee Marvin. Too bad he had a drinking problem and
died so young at 63.

AMC did a special on Lee awhile back. He was a pretty amazing actor. One of the few that could go toe to toe with John Wayne in a scene and not look physically diminished.
In real life, he was said to suffer guilt from being one of the few survivors out of his marine unit. At the begining of the battle for one of the islands he was injured in the buttocks and had to be sent to hospital to get treatment. Most in his unit didn't survive.
Catch the movie of him stranded on the island with a Japanese soldier. Just the two of them as they take turns capturing each other and being captured. Great movie.
Big Red One,one of the best WWll movies ever made.
I would like to see the AMC special on Lee. He was also good in The Man
Who Shot Liberty Valance. He could look and act so mean but I am sure
in real life, he was a nice guy. The guilt he felt might have been why he
drank. What a loss of a great actor!
He won an Oscar for Cat Ballou. Deservedly, too. Kid Shelleen was a great character. In his acceptance speech he said that half of the award should go to the horse he rode in the movie.
15 years ago we met the sow who sued lee for 'palimony'(LOL). Lee must have been REAL drunk to get involved with that creep. Also, was Lee hung?
Discusss!
The three "Dirty Dozen" movies made later on never should
have been. Sometimes you just can't top the original. I
also liked John Cassavetes too and Telly Savalas. I think all
the actors played their parts very well. John was nominated for
an Oscar and in "The Dirty Dozen" special edition I ordered, there
is an addition where they talk about the making of "The Dirty
Dozen". Lee liked working with John and his attitude. He said it
helped him with his role as Major Reisman. Good movie!
The other ones sucked!!!!!!!
I can watch the first one and never get tired of them.
Incorrigible as a youth, he was thrown out of numerous schools, until he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the beginning of World War II. He was wounded in June 1944 during the Battle of Saipan, and spent the remainder of the war convalescing in New York.
Was John wayne ever in the army?
John Wayne, to my knowledge, never served in the armed forces
but he could play those parts well.
The Duke was perfect for those roles but never served. In more than a couple of his biographies Wayne does feel guilt for concentrating on his career while many of his fellow hollywood stars were serving. Jimmy Stewart gave up an award winning career to go into military and came out a highly decorated bomber pilot, Clark Gable coming off of Gone With The Wind went in as a combat tailgunner, etc.
Director John Ford also served in the Navy during WW2.
I sent Scott an email asking him to include Lee in the directory at
Find a Death. I would like to know about his life and death other
than what I have read. I do know he had 3 daughters and 1 son.
Wonder what they thought of their dad?
As for Michelle Triola, she is now living with Dick Van Dyke. When
he passes, I'm sure if he doesn't leave her something, she will probably
sue him or his kids too.
Lee Marvin was a rough and tumble work hard play harder kind of man from everything of read and seen on him. I do know he loved to go fishing for marlin on his boat. He was great in the The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is my favorite movie of his. Good actor and served his country in the service.
Since I know very little about his life, were there any actors or actresses
he didn't like or get along with? I heard Charles Bronson didn't like him
on the Dirty Dozen movie set. I just watched Operation Dirty Dozen that
came with my Dirty Dozen Special Edition and it was talking about the
stars in England and how Lee kept everyone's morale up with his attitude.
Supposedly he could be a fun guy.
I heard that Lee said of all the things he accomplished in this life
including winning an Oscar for Cat Ballou, serving his country was
number one. He died too young.
No way the pussy actors of today would join up and serve their country. Could you see Ben Asslick in Iraq? They won't even join the USO and tour anymore.
Does anyone know about his family? I would like to see a picture of his
kids.

Here is a list of stars that served in World war II
Yeah we would be in big trouble if pussies like that worthless piece of shit Tom Cruise and people like that joined.
I bet he is a wimp in real life!!!! Unlike thinking he is this hard ass in his movies!!
I'll bet in real life Lee would have kicked John Waynes ass all the way back to Iowa.
AMC did a great special on Lee Marvin
One of the issues discussed, was the Sons of Lee Marvin Society

Jarmush has had an interesting career

Great Lee Marvin movies, Point Blank (recall the car scene in which he takes a car salesman for a hell of a ride); Prime Cut (gene hackman-lee marvin does it get any better); or Emporer of the North.
Although Pat Tillman certainly deserves respect..What about those that are not famous and joined up and are over there now? Do you think they do not deserve our respect as well?
i liked him in "emperor of the north" with one of those carradines's, and ernest borgnine(?).
Does anyone know when his biography is coming on again on T.V.?
I loved Lee Marvin, and my favorite movie was Donovan Reef, with John Wayne. He played such a funny character.
Let me go off topic and comment on the war record concerning today's actors as apposed to those during WWII
Sadly, Back then it was a time where everyone looked out for each other, and that included baring arms against the enemy, but today it is the me, me, me time, where movie actors don't feel the call to action, they just hope in private that someone is taking care of it.
I would still like to see pictures of his children. He was a
ruggedly handsome guy. Wonder if his son looks like him.
His son is my age.
Over the Thanksgiving holidays, I had to watch "The Dirty Dozen" again.
Can't get enough of this great movie. In my opinion, Lee should have won
an Oscar for it, but then I am prejudice.
I read his widow is selling their home in Tucson for 6 million so she can move
back to New York.
I liked him, woulda liked to hang with him lol
Lee Marvin interview - enjoy!!

Yep! I don't see ANY stars of today running out to enlist!
And Lee was proud of serving! "The Dirty Dozen" is one of my all time favorite movies!!!
In the end Lee wanted to branch out and do comedy movies I read. To bad he never got a chance to do it..well he did do a Chuck Norris movie!!!
I think that was his last??
RIP Lee. He was the real deal
I wish I could find a tape of his funeral but that was 20 yrs ago so
it may not exist.

I visited Arlington National on a few occassions and went to Lee's grave and those of many of the famous we all know.I was really moved when I seen Audie Murphy's grave, just a plain simple grave! I would have thought that "The most decorated soldier of WWII" would have something a little more befitting, but Audie was a simple Man and that is what he requested.
He did his own stunts in the film 'Emperor of The North., Borgnine and Carradine did too, i believe. he was type casted in everything he did, but i loved him in every single film of his ive seen. Thanks for the pic of his grave.
Here is something I found while researching Arlington National Cemetery which by the
way has Audie Murphy listed as residing there but not Lee Marvin. That surprised me.

Toward the bottom under External Links, there are three interviews with Lee. Very interesting
especially the last one with Outre Magazine.
Toward the end of the article, it tells of his last days and it mentioned he was cremated.
Also, an upcoming biography is being written by Dwayne Epstein called, "Lee Marvin: Point Blank"

I watched Point Blank today and was sorta disappointed. It wasn't the best of his movies.
Too many flashbacks but Lee still did the best he could with it. Still don't know why he isn't
listed on the Arlington National Cemetary website.
Today, Feb. 19, would have been Lee's 84th birthday.
I watched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance last night
and have decided not to remember Lee in the films he
did when he wasn't in the best of health and should have
already retired but in the ones when he was younger. It
just saddens me that he let alcohol and cigarettes take
his life too soon. There will never be another one like him.
Steven Spielberg offered Lee the role of Quint in Jaws but Marvin turned him down. Also turned down the lead in Patton.
I have to say that Mr. Marvin was all that is man. He was rugged, handsome, and that voice. I think anything he did was absolute perfection. What a man.
I got him.
If you turn around you are face-to-face with Joe Louis. It was like being caught in a maelstrom of total asskicking awesomeness.
