I don't know if it was well known but a good bit of the music of the Grateful Dead was either written by Robert Hunter or with Robert Hunter.
IMO the guy had it pretty good. He got the songwriting money but didn't have to deal with all the problems that go along with being famous. Jerry Garcia couldn't go out in public but this guy could go pretty much anywhere he wanted.
