Little Bit's, either. I just bought hers in March. Windows 8.1 tablet PC. The touchscreen detaches from the keyboard and she's got a tablet. Attach the tablet to the keyboard and she's got a full blown computer.

Sweeeet. My computer takes about a minute or so to boot in 8.1.

From reading all of the trade magazines, they all seem to say that if you have Windows 8, then make the upgrade to Windows 10 ASAP. If you have a good stable version of Windows 7, then hold off until all of the patches, upgrades, and other packs get released in order to make the switch over as smooth as possible. It is amazing the lack on information about the technical aspects of Windows 10. In Windows 7, you had to upgrade to 7 Professional in order to utilize more then 16GB of RAM. Since I use 64GB of DDR3 this was a big deal for me. I need to wait for the release just to see if Windows 10 will work for me.
To my Father. Even though you have crossed the plane, you will always be with me.
You were not just my Father, but my hero. My life has been a poor attempt to be like you
You taught me music, vocals, and how to fight. I can only hope I am half the man you are
When I close my eyes I can see you. And finally, Thank you Dad. for everything.

I think 10 may be downloading on my computer unless other stuff I have is updating. The thing's been acting goofy all week and sometimes runs slower than normal.

Mine does that at least once per week, when windows 7 or Firefox is updating. I wish they would at least give a heads up before they started, but all I ever get is that window saying my computer would be restarted at whatever minutes unless I wanted to rescheduled it.

Firefox updates are pretty fast. But then I have mine set to notify me if there is an update available so I can delay it for a bit if I'm in the middle of something. Then when I'm done I'll go to Help then to About and get the update. Of course FF will keep reminding me every 10 minutes or so, but I'll get 'er done fairly soon, during that online session usually.

Likewise for Windows update. I have it set for notification only ready for a large download then restart. But since MS slipped in Win10 nag file among the real updates, I've made it a habit to go through each file and see what it is. That's how I caught the nag files after reading about them, so I can hide those files.

Love how they've got babies and toddlers in the commercials for Windows 10, saying things like "He won't just surf the Internet, he'll touch it. Scribble on it. Share it." And end the commercial with, "They'll grow up with Windows 10." When by the time these kids are older, there will be a whole new version of Windows. Technology is ever-changing. Gotta love it.

Youngster? My first-ever computer ran DOS and had to be booted up with a floppy disk. That's right, I said floppy disk. ROFL BIL attempted to upgrade it. He opened it up, laughed himself silly, and closed it again and said, "I can't do anything. There's no hard drive TO upgrade!"

At least you had one. Lol. I didn't get my first computer until 2005 XP. Before that I had two or three word processors, because computers back in them dark days were way out of my budget. I wouldn't have been able to buy the XP, which was cheaper by then, had Nabo not bought it for me.

I never had a word processor. I had an old-fashioned typewriter. LOL

I had old fashioned typewriters too, little portable manuals where you had to bang those keys down. I would come home from work at 3am and start banging one my fiction in such a heat that I no thought for poor mama's ears. So one morning she goes "What are you writing so early in the morning?" Ooops. But she wasn't angry. It's a wonder. I hated that thing, and I hated word processors because when something broke you had to replace the whole thing instead of just, say, the keyboard.

Dang, Ria, you are a veteran. I can't imagine manually booting Windows but at least you know command line syntax.

My first was a Commodore 64 with impact printer. Still have it. I bought a Word processor program and it was easy to use. Then I bought a data base program to keep up with customers...never did figure it out.

First internet pc was a Compaq with Win98 back in the late 90's. Ah the days of dial up, arguments over which browser was better...Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, when Norton Antivirus was owned by a guy named Norton, blue screens galore, the frequent use of the 3-finger salute. Good old days.

I remember when Internet Explore was a ghost of what it is today, and netscape. AOL was my homepage and I used their browser as default. Oh, and how do you spell AOL? CRAP.

Yep, I am a veteran. I don't remember a lick of the command line syntax now. My first Internet PC ran Windows 95, I think. I remember being in labor with Schmoo, and the first two days of labor I was at home. To keep my phone line tied up, I left my computer online. On dialup. I remember the "skreeee-weee-weee-weee-WEEEEE!" noise the modem made as it connected to the World Wide Web. I was a regular in the AOL chatrooms, could sniff a SNERT (Snot Nosed Egotistical Rude Twat or Teen) from a mile away. I still can, but I think now we call them trolls.

Ouch. I've been spanked. I remember 8 and 51/4 inch floppys. The wee ones I never consider floppy since their cases were hard.

Oh, and buying a copy of Windows For Dummies!

I learned a lot from a program titled "Call For Help". It was on the ZDTV channel. A guy named Leo LaPorte would instruct computer novices, like me, on how to use them. He would take calls and answer questions. Leo made it easy and interesting. I recall him one epi discussing his impressions of XP Beta...he was wild about it. This was back around 1998-1999.

One prediction he made which came true. Back then he stated that we were in the golden age of the internet as almost everything was free to use online and there were few ads. He said, enjoy it. Was Leo right!

You loved it. I don't remember 8" floppies, but I do remember 5-1/4" floppies. I agree. The 3-1/2" didn't flop around as much as the bigger ones, yet they were still considered floppy disks. I still have a ZIP drive, too, but no way to hook it up. It hooked up to the parallel printer port on the computer. My current computer has no parallel port, no serial port, no PS/2 port, it's all USB and a few other ports I don't use.

Windows 10 is for suckers, so says a writer for Computerworld:

As a rule, the smart thing for Windows 7 users to do, is nothing.

Windows XP or Vista users are probably better off buying a new computer rather than upgrading their old one.
Windows 8 users interested in Windows 10 should probably upgrade in June or July of 2016. This lets Windows 10 mature a bit while still being offered for free.

Yeah, that writer for Computerworld thinks that W10 will be more buggier at roll out than was Vista. If it's even close to that bad, as much as MS has touted W10, it'll be total pr disaster for MS.

Vista was totally lame, and now I have Windows 8.1 which sucks bunnies!!! *&^%!!! I'm going to upgrade to Windows 10 by this weekend. According to CNN, it's the bee's knees.

Another reason I'm sticking to W7. I do not want to give microsoft that much control. They were doing something yesterday. IDK what. Updating, but it was different from the old update routine where they either notify a restart or you find out restarting after a freeze. Also, they usually do it on the weekend. Funny it happened on Windows 10 release day, but I'm paranoid like that.

I heard Windows 10 was beyond awesome. I know the CEO of Mozilla is already crying about it. When competitors start complaining it usually means a good product lol I have a dumb noob type question... will all my personal files/games/porn/music import to the new OS automatically or will I lose everything like a system reset?

All files and some apps are supposed to transfer.

They threw me an email today that made me go What?--Your reserved Copy of Windows 10 is here, now what? Um, I cancelled mine.

Considering the MS bureaucracy, if it were me I would ignore it. But it does give one the strong impression that MS wants to shove W10 down everyone's throat. The sneaky way MS dropped W10 download files in among "important" updates a couple of months ago alone is enough for me to stick with W7 until I need a new pc.

But if I were going to upgrade, I'd danged sure back up onto a portable USB hd, provided it's W10 compatible. One needs to be backing up onto a portable hd anyway. A Seagate 1-terrabyte Backup Plus Slim is only around $100. Cheap insurance for data and app settings.

Oh, I ignored them, all right. If they sneak it on me, I may go to MAC. Why give a choice when they are going to do what they want in the first place? Bugger, one way or another.

I went ahead and took the plunge. So far so good. I know one rumor that was complete horseshit. Or it's been fixed. The whole "can't choose your own browser". After getting windows 10 my Firefox was fine and dandy with all my favorites and add ons intact.

I haven't heard that rumor, which I would have poo-pooed until I confirmed it. Even MS wouldn't be stupid enough to disallow competing browsers.

For everyone, Win10 is spying on you and here's how to opt out:

Yeah Bidmor. So is Windows 7,8 and all the others.... as well as Facebook, Twitter, and the rest. The "spying" is nothing more than keeping up with your trends to give you a more personal experience. You can go to settings and uncheck the tracking options you don't want. Pretty easy navigation so far. I need to get a bit more familiar with it but I like it so far. I don't have a smartphone and have no apps but this is looking like a paradise for those that do.

There was one minor hiccup where my internet security was hard to find and such. Once I figured out what was up I cleared it up quickly and easily. Now it's off to play Lord Of The Rings Online to see if it has any effect on gaming.

I'm currently backing my stuff up to the cloud in preparation for the upgrade. Next weekend, Little Bit is going to her aunt's, and I told her to leave her computer here and I'll upgrade hers, too.

I have decided to hold off on the upgrade for a little bit. It took over SIX HOURS for my crappy Internet connection to back up everything to Google Drive. Little Bit is going to her aunt's one last time before school starts in less than three weeks, so I'll wait until she's at her aunt's and Hubby's at work and I can have just my computer online. Unless Google Fiber goes live before then, which I am hoping it does, because then it'll get done quicker'n you can say Bob's your uncle.

I don't have any X-Box games, our games are Wii and PS1, 2, and 3. The online games I play are on Facebook, i.e. Criminal Case, other games I play from my phone like Words with Friends, or on one of the consoles. So I really won't have anything to compare it to. I'm looking forward to the upgrade, and I intend to upgrade both kids' computers, too. I already told Schmoo I'd do that for him while he's...ah...away and when he comes back he'll have a completely up-to-date computer.

Little Bit's is a Windows tablet PC that so far does not have the little Windows thingy in the bottom right saying she's eligible. But she should be. And on her phone, too, she's got a Windows phone. I did that on purpose because she's learning computer literacy still and I'm trying to make it as easy on her as possible. She's getting a free Chromebook from the school district (every student in our district from K-12 gets a free Chromebook this fall) and I don't want her to be too confused. Her computer at home and her phone have the same operating system. She's not going from Android to Windows to Chromebook. Just Windows and Chromebook for her.

I play Solitaire. Both were on my computer when I bought it, but I had to go premium with one. I also have a premium blasterball that hardly every play. I do have a bit of trouble booting them up sometimes, but nothing to kick my desk over.

My phone and tablet have google browers, and Sissy has a Chromebook, no 10 window icon (haven't looked at tablet. I think you have to request it for some devices.

Nope, as long as your Windows is to to date, you should get it. I got it on mine, but Little Bit didn't get it on hers. No worries, though, I found a way to bypass the waiting for the icon and get it anyway.

It just dawned on me that her tablet is signed in under my Windows ID because she wanted to download a game. Under 13 has to have an adult log in with their Windows ID.

ETA: Chromebooks won't get it, they run Chrome OS, not Windows. Android tablets won't get it, either, just Windows tablets, PCs, and phones.

OK. My first computer use a cassette tape to save. Awesome.

I've got Windows 10. I had a slight issue with my firewall and some issues with Youtube videos on Facebook stalling, but that has already been fixed. So far so good- all of my programs are running pretty well. Gaming is the same- but I use mods, so that probably causes the few glitches that I get.
