In keeping with the thread, P, do you celebrate the Day or no?
It is the thought that counts Jim... or as now I will call you J.

No I personally do not do anything, what a rip off day! Though I was planning to send some flowers to myself and pretend they are from someone. haaaaaaa.. oh how sad.

When the ladies get them in the office it always makes me smile - such pretty flowers. I love flowers even if they are not for me.

Ahh Aries - Single Awareness Day - that is hilarious!!!! Crack that Champagne Comedy! haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Actually, I HATE V-Day, even though I am happily married to a very thoughtful guy who showers me with lots of stuff every year. It's almost embarrassing, because the flowers he sends me are way over the top, and one year I had to ask one of the burly guys to carry it to my desk for me.

Nonetheless, I got married when I was 32, so that meant many years of being single. I always hated it when all the other girls in the office would get flower deliveries except me. I felt so humiliated.

And then the years before I got married when I was in two-year relationship with Mr. A-Hole. I would go all out, make him dinner, buy him nice gifts, somewhat expecting some nice jewelry, or even an engagement ring. But then getting a half-dead single red rose that he bought at 7-11 on the way over. It isn't the price of a gift, it's the thought that counts. What the HELL was he thinking?

But my worst memories of V-Day are from my childhood. Here in the States, school kids are encouraged to bring valentines for all of their classmates. The girl sitting next to me with the Farrah Fawcett bangs would get literally dozens of valentines while I got very few. And some of them contained hate messages, if you can believe that.

With that all said, I got my husband a DVD set of Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, some massage oil and a gift certificate for three (3) massages from me. My kids will be getting some goofy stuff from Bath and Body Works (they practically live in the bath tub) and perhaps a DVD or video game. My Dad is getting a big plate of home-made cookies.

But the bottom line is: I HATE V-DAY!
Any day above ground is a good day.

I tell my husband not to throw away money on things I won't use. All he needs to do is just be himself on that day like any other. To me, that's the best gift ever.

When I was single I loved valentines day. It was the easiest day of the year to pick up some girl in a bar. I think Valentines day is the single biggest day of the year for one night stands. Now days Im doing the dinner and Jewlery thing.

Yeah...but it's not like he never buys me things. Presents all the year round, (decent ones) but doens't want to 'conform' as that's what he says V day is...a scam and yes he also says 'I can buy you a present any time i don't need someone to tell me to do it on that day'.
I know I make him sound like a rat, and he's not. He's actually saved my life on more than one occasion. Still, though, a bunch of flowers would be nice

    I'm not really into VD!
However each year we set each other a task. We have to buy each other a present that costs not more than 10 quid. Tomorrow night we're doing nothing special cos neither of us want to be sitting in a restaurant with a load of other couples faking romance.

But on friday we're going to a casino with some friends - now that's my kind of night out.

Well honey, you seem like such a sweetie & us older death hags feel the need to protect our young uns, but if you're happy with him then its all good. Now if he ever abuses you mentally or physically, we will hunt him down & kill him & then stare at his dead corpse while MBALMR shows us the tricks of the trade in body preservation.

He's right - it is a scam. And he doesn't sound like a rat - just someone who's a bit clued up.

Really - what does that bunch of flowers really mean when he's buying you pressies at other times during the year?

    Don't fall for the hype!

Hubby & I don't get much into it either, Valentines & Sweetest Day, hubby calls them Hallmark Holidays! I just think they're silly for us, I think its sweet though when other couples celebrate it.

We'll get each other cards, but that will be it. We chose to spend our extra cash this month taking DS to the rodeo grounds last weekend - the pics we have of him having a blast on the lil mini roller coaster are priceless in our book

I opened my door this morning to go get my 6 year old son from school...he only had a half a day today and what was on my porch but flowers he and his father picked up this morning and left on my porch! I was so surprised not because my son who said "you're my Valentine mommy" got me flowers but because his father/my ex actually took him to do it...this man didn't even bring me flowers when I gave birth!

as far as my boyfriend is concerned...we are doing our thing on Saturday night...he's coming over...we're going to dinner and a movie then back to my place for a little somethin somethin...I got a really cute teddy that I "tried on" at the store...actually I didn't...I just threw it on the floor...if it looks good then I buy it!

he's not obligated to get me anything...but something would be nice from an actual boyfriend...my ex husband (not my son's dad) used to give me the SAME CARD year after year...he would dig it out and add the date and the year to it...CHEAP SON OF A BITCH!

Valentines Day has always been a fun holiday for me, but this year I am single, so I will be spending it with my daughter. We are attending a party at her pre-school tomorrow night with pizza and ice cream!

I get a gift from my Dad every year and my daughter has always been my Valentine since she was born (she is 4) and so I got her a gift.

I hate chocolate, but love flowers, so I will get myself some of my fave flowers (stargazer lillies) and go to the party!

When I was with my ex, we would go out to eat and exchange small gifts. Although last year was a great Tiffany necklace!

Heart shaped pizzas are always fun too.

I realize that these sentiments are hollow if you are alone & wish that you were not...but TRY to find joy in the space that you are in. If that doesn't work for you, focus on the stessful night before Valentine's Day when, as a kid, you had to frantically write something nice...even if it was just someone else's name for each classmate! Damn I hated that annual tradition!

Okay, this really sucks. California passed a law that prevents schools from selling or serving candy, cookies, junk food, soda pop and other treats. My kids go to a private school and every Friday would be cupcake day, where the kids could buy a cupcake for $0.25, I think the cupcakes were donated by a local bakery. The money would be saved up all year and they would end up donating several thousand dollars to a charity.

Still worse, no more school parties where the kids could have candy, cookies or any other normal treat like they would for Halloween, Christmas or VALENTINE'S DAY!!! GRRR!!! So tonight me and my kids put together their valentines for the classes with pencils taped on. What fun is that? I don't know, maybe it's me, but isn't one of the joys of childhood to be able to eat yourself silly with chocolate, red hots and those little heart candies that have writing on them?

I am pissed, but my kids don't have a problem with it so I am going to let it rest. Grrrrrrr!

    P.S. LOVE the card above!
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Geez, Dearheart, I thought guys that stole flowers off of people's graves only existed in comedies! You're well rid of him! That was a nice surprise from your other ex and your son. Maybe your son brings out his better side.

I bought my husband a card and a small floral arrangement for his desk- he's working from home today, so I might actually see him. I lavished a lot more attention on the kids- they'll get a kick out of it, and be more disappointed than the hubby if I downplay it. They're all having cards and goodies at school (my daughter isn't having goodies, she's at a Montessori school that doesn't allow them).

The public schools are funny; you can't have a Halloween party, and dress up anymore, but they have a "Harvest Party" that's basically the same.

So the kids will be all revved up on chocolate at bedtime! Yay for me.

I think we're going to have a romantic evening catching up on "Dexter" episodes.

OMG I always felt those cemetary thieves were one of the lowest forms of life! What a jerk, glad you got rid of him. The flowers today were very nice, I'm sure your son's idea & his daddy probably made him use his allowance or piggy bank money! Glad your son does not take after his dad in that respect.

The law applies to private schools as well???

well, rather than teach kids self control and proper portion control just take it away from them completely and punish the average/normal sized kids in the process. Yeah, makes total sense
