I was just reading about that on my home page. That is just horrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family members and love ones of the people killed. May they rest in peace. Such a tragedy and so close to the holiday's. Damnit what makes people do this type of thing. No one absolutely no one has the right to play god and decide who lives or dies!!!!! Especially when they appear to be perfect stangers.

Sorry stepping carefully off of soap box now!!!

What the hell is going on in our nation's heartland? Onehung says Iowa is murder central and RJ talks of stabbings in Nebraska. I believe you both, but I don't see any of that in the national media. I read all the major news weeklies.... The perception is that Flyover country is nice and peaceful. Anybody else from the south or the coasts get the same impression?

There is a video up on youtube where the columbine massacre is reenacted... that is probably the closest one can come to understand how it is to be in this situation without really being in it. Before I knew it was fake I got some serious goose bumps watching it.

I believe it was called "Zero Hour"

it has been getting more & more dangerous, omaha is nearly a million people, which alot of people don't know~ i know cities are bigger, but we have alot of crime here~ we were just voted also the 4th drunkest city in the nation~ we have a huge gang problem here, the guardian angels now patrol our streets along w/ the police~

they just said that a lady went to the police dept w/ a note from the shooter they suspect~ things are sketchy but he is believed to be a 19 yr old white male, & the note alluded to going out big~

For omaha its a shock, granted we are use to the gang shootings and shit, but to have this at the mall, You know that kind of stuff will happen someday. But to have it happen right now during the holidays, I think makes it a little more shocking. I know my ass will stay home and do holiday shopping right off this computer, No way i will go to any mall now to go shopping, I dont want a bullet hitting my daugther or me right now. Im fine about taking chances, but not around the holidays.

I don't get it why people go all apeshit about former sex offenders moving in down the street.
This goes to show there are a lot more things to worry about than sex offenders. (S.O.)
I'd rather know of a convicted murderer moving in next door than a S.O.

Same thing with terrorists. We're told to be on the lookout for the terrorists! But it's not the terrorists who are the real threat. Nuts with guns are doing a fine job without a terrorist attack.
Outlaw and get rid of ALL guns already. They are used for one purpose and one purpose only. To cause harm and damage. Nothing else.
"Guns don't kill people. People kill people." Yeah but people kill people with guns!

The gunman left a suicide note that was found at his home by his mother, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak. TV station KETV reported that the note said he wanted to "go out in style."

Mall shooter's suicide note: Now I'll be famous

Police identify gunman as Robert A. Hawkins, 19, of Nebraska
Panicked holiday shoppers flee for cover; "I was scared to death," witness says
Landlady: Hawkins called her minutes before shooting, left suicide note.

OMAHA, Nebraska (CNN) -- A 19-year-old gunman who police said killed eight people and then himself at a Nebraska mall left a suicide note predicting the shootings would make him famous, his landlord said.
Police have identified the gunman as Robert A. Hawkins, 19, of Nebraska.

Five other people were injured, and two of them were in critical condition, hospital officials said.
The shootings inside the Von Maur department store at the popular Westroads Mall in Omaha sent panicked holiday shoppers fleeing for cover.
"It was just so loud, and then it was silence," said witness Jennifer Kramer, who hid behind a clothing rack. "I was scared to death he'd be walking around looking for someone else."
Police identified the gunman as Robert A. Hawkins of Nebraska.
Chief Thomas Warren of the Omaha Police Department called the shooting "premeditated," but said it "appears to be very random and without provocation."
Debora Maruca Kovac, Hawkins' landlord, said she found the suicide note after getting a phone call from Hawkins about 1 p.m., just minutes before the shootings. Watch landlord describe phone call from shooter »
"He basically said how sorry he was for everything," Maruca Kovac said of the note. "He didn't want to be a burden to people and that he was a piece of s--- all of his life and that now he'd be famous."
She said Hawkins was a friend of her sons and "reminded me of a lost puppy that nobody wanted." He came to live with her about a year and a half ago, telling her he could not stay with his own family because of "some issues with his stepmother."
She described Hawkins as well-behaved, although "he had a lot of emotional problems, obviously."
The shootings began about 1:42 p.m. (2:42 p.m. ET).
Seven people were found dead at the scene by officers who arrived six minutes later; two others, a male and a female, died after being transported to Creighton University Medical Center, said Fire Chief Robert Dahlquist.
A Creighton spokeswoman said a second female underwent surgery and was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
Three other people were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
One, a 61-year-old man who sustained a chest wound after being shot in the armpit, had surgery and remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit Wednesday night, said hospital spokeswoman Maggie O'Brien.
The other two -- a 34-year-old man who was shot in the arm, and a 55-year-old man who fell and struck a clothing rack as he was trying to escape -- were treated and released, she said.
Warren said Hawkins was armed with an SKS assault rifle. His body, and the weapon, were found on the store's third floor, he said.

Maruca Kovac told CNN that Hawkins left the house Wednesday about 11 a.m., and called the house about two hours later, sounding upset.
"He just said he wanted to thank me for everything I'd done for him ... and he was sorry," Maruca Kovac said. He told her he had gotten fired from his job at a McDonald's restaurant, she said.
"I said, 'Come home and we'll talk about it,' " she recounted. "He said, 'It's too late.' He said he'd left a note explaining everything."
Kramer told CNN she heard at least 25 shots.
"I looked at my mom and said, 'We need to get out of here. Those are gunshots,' " Kramer said. "I just grabbed my mom and we ran to the back of the men's department and hid in some pants racks."
"He just kept firing," he said. She said she called 911 on her cell phone, whispering into it out of fear of being heard. A dispatcher told her other calls had been received and help was on the way, but she said it seemed to take "a long time" for them to arrive.
She said as she was being escorted out by police, she saw a man lying injured by the escalator where she had been previously.
Mall employee Charissa Tatoon said a man by an escalator near her was heard saying he was calling 911.
"Immediately after that, the shooter shot down from the third floor and shot him on the second floor," she said.
"All of us were slightly confused because we didn't know what it was," Tatoon said. "Immediately after that, there was a series of maybe 20 to 25 more shots up on the third floor."
Warren, the police chief, said the victims included five females and three males, not including Hawkins. The shooting appeared to be contained in the Von Maur store, he said.

Maruca Kovac said she was unaware Hawkins had any guns, although he knew a lot about them, as did his stepfather.
"When he first came to live with us, he was in the fetal position and chewed his fingernails all the time," she said. But she said she thought he was improving, as he had gotten a job, a haircut and a girlfriend.
However, she said Hawkins and his girlfriend had broken up in the last couple of weeks, and he had taken it hard.
She said late Wednesday that authorities were searching her house for evidence.
"My kids are devastated," she said. "We're all in shock."
Hawkins' former school district released a photo of a youth with glasses and long black hair. A spokeswoman said he attended Papillion-La Vista High School until he withdrew in March 2006.

actually reminds me of a guy I used to be friends with, just doesn't seem like he found his place in the world and wants to be noticed. Makes me wonder if I should give him a call now to see how he is, I've been avoiding him.

I was watching the story this morning on Good Morning America. They had 3 women on that were at the Mall and in the store hiding from gunman. One spoke of how she had to watch a man who was shot, slowly die and how she couldn't get to him and just hold his hand and comfort him, to let him know someone was there with him.
That was sad!

from his stepdad & mom's house, they searched it last night along w/ the house he had been staying at w/ friends~
his mom found a note that sounded suicidal & took it to the police, that is how they linked him~
he was seen w/ the gun the night before, but the ones who saw it, said it looked too old to be able to function & he & his firends hunted, so they thought he might be off to do that w/ the gun~ i guess they were dead wrong about that~ it is coming out more & more that he was a disturbed kid & that know one really thought to do anything about it~
he was fired from mcdanald's, the mcdanald's i take my son to, it is a mile from where i live~ i swear this kid waited on me at the drive thru~ soon as i saw his pic, i just knew it was him~
he left 3 notes, 2 suicide notes & a will~
they are going to release the names of the victims in 1 & a half hours~

Posting his pic and telling his story is giving him notoriety, if not for 15 years then 15 minutes. Not saying it's bad... just saying it's what he wanted and why he did it, mission accomplished.

This is awful ! I hate to say it but the age of the shooter does not surprise me..unfortunately there are a lot of kids this age who think they can solve all their problems by shooting up a bunch of innocent people..I'm not saying all kids this age.. but this seems to be more and more common.

It's kind of like all the car bombings and suicide bombers in third world countries, we say "oh man that's terrible" but forget about it in a day or two. If you aren't right in the area or personally affected it's human nature to forget about it or to not keep it on the fore front of your mind.

I can understand your shock and disbelief Goddess... one things for sure, this will stay on every bodies mind until the holidays are over.

l'm genuinely sorry you found me cold.
l acknowledged that it would be different for people in the area or who knew the victims.
but it's not even in the newspaper where l am.
a girl from my town was shot through her apartment door when she moved to toronto. horrible. do you know about it? remember it? doubt it. and the gunman is not famous because of it.
l wasn't saying this isn't terrible. l don't think the guy will be "famous."

Not near as infamous for it as the guy who went on his rampage at Virginia Tech, or the Columbine killers, or the other kids who killed at high schools across america...someone somehow somewhere had to know something wasnt right with these kids and could/should have done something...just sad all the way around...the victims of all crimes and their loved ones are always in my thoughts and prayers....

Hind site is always 20/20... nobody will ever stop these people because they are too preoccupied with their own lives and would never allow themselves to expect something like this could happen. It would dare them to actually give a shit... I speak from experience, I know a guy who fits this persons description and I don't give him the time of day, why? because it's an inconvenience to me.
