This very sad story happened not long before I moved over here

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3226606.stm

I work with one of the victim's mum's, not really sure why their child was in care and I don't like to ask but she's always seemed like a nice lady to me.

Going way back, these murders happened in the town I grew up in Merseyside

I pray for her mom. (Her dad ended up drinking himself to death over this, his only child).
I have just read the book about her, it is so sad, torturing someone right up to their death is one of the worst things to happen.
The "Anita Cobby" murder in Australia, is another horrendous torturing crime.

The closest to anything like that near me was in Lancaster when that maniac shot up an amish school house...and the murder of laurie show that was turned into a made for tv movie, The Stalking of Laurie Show. Oh and I almost forgot Edward Cullen the Angel of Death.

I put Edward Cullen...oops I meant Charles..Edward is the Catholic Bishop in Allentown!

I was in New Orleans at a conference when that happened. I was staying at the Sheraton - I went to many voodoo shops in the French Quarter during that week.

JP Kelso - knew him, did not like him, he was a pig to be honest and would throw money all over the place... he lived between Boston and Denver.

Robbery called motive in killing

Timothy John Boham was being sought by Denver police in connection with the murder on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 of John Kelso. (Denver Police)

A male model who acted in gay-sex movies told his family that he killed Denver businessman John "JP" Kelso because he wanted the $100,000 to $400,000 Kelso kept in his household safe, according to court documents.
Timothy J. Boham, 25, said he planned to use the money to go to South America with his girlfriend, he told his mother and sister shortly after the shooting, the records allege.
But Boham said his plan went awry when Kelso refused to open the safe, and there was a brief struggle during which he accidentally shot Kelso, according to the records.
Boham told his family that when he cut the safe open, it was empty and "so he had done this for nothing," according to a police affidavit.
A subdued Boham appeared in Denver County Court on Wednesday, where he waived the reading of the charges against him, which include first- degree murder and aggravated robbery. His preliminary hearing was set for the middle of January.
Police were called to Kelso's home, in the 3600 block of East Seventh Avenue, on Nov. 13 by one of his employees who said he had found Kelso in the bathtub.
Kelso had a gunshot wound to the head, police said.
Kelso was the founder of Professional Recovery Systems, a Denver collection agency. Boham was one of Kelso's employees.
Police said in the affidavit for Boham's arrest that friends and co-workers told them Kelso had, in the past, hired male escorts to whom he presented gifts. The co-workers believed that Kelso had developed a relationship with Boham, the affidavit said.
Police were able to track Boham with the help of his sister, Katherine, and his mother, Susan Stone, who called police after they had talked to Boham. They told investigators that Boham told them he was going to Mexico and gave officers Boham's cellphone number.
On Nov. 14, Denver police Detective Randy Denison received a phone call from Boham, who had called the detective at the urging of his mother.
Court documents said that during the conversation, Boham admitted shooting Kelso during a robbery attempt.
Boham was arrested Nov. 16 in Arizona, near the Mexican border, by customs officers.

I grew up in the town where Johnny Stompanato was from (killed by Lana Turner's daughter Cheryl). Woodstock, IL. Johnny is buried there too. Been to his grave.
Now I live about an hour from Rice Lake, WI where all the hunters were killed by Vang a while back. I hunt about 5 miles from where all that went down. That was truly awful.

I live near Seattle. We had Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgeway, of course. Then there was the woman who put poison in the Tylenol bottle to poison her husband. Remember how they yanked capsules off the market. It was a panic across the nation. There are many more, but these three are probably the most famous.

I've read the entire case of Gary Ridgeway. They had a link to the case from a local tv station. I was up all night reading it when it came out. It is DISGUSTING!!!!! I'm not a person who gets grossed out, but what he did to some of those women was just nasty. He'd have sex with some of them after they'd been dead a while, but he'd stop when the maggots got too bad. <shudder>

1980's 22 caliber killer, Joseph Christopher was shooting and killing black men in the city of Buffalo. He was caught, convicted, and died in jail of cancer. Also, in Cheektowaga, NY in the 1990's we had our own Norman Bates...some dude who lived with his mother's dead body because he was challenged and didn't realize mommy needs to go to sleepy now.

This post is similar to the one discussing nationally reported murder incidents in your area. Anyone have big time murderers or similar low life types originating from your area who may have gone somewhere else to do their dirty deeds?

My state can boast a few fairly well-known scum bags...
Charlie Manson
Jim Jones
John Dillinger

I know there must be more and will post if I think of them.

Yep, yep, yep. The film Dead Man Walking was based on two, not one, death row inmates. I remember one of those inmates well - Robert Lee Willie. I have been to his gravesite only a couple of times, but not in the past few years.

I doubt much has changed, though. Last I saw (about 5 years ago) he's buried right smack in the middle of this little cemetery, and NO ONE was buried within 25 feet around him either way. Except for his dad, whose in an unmarked grave next to him. It's like there's this big invisible fence that keeps all of the other graves away from him, not wanting to be buried for all eternity next to the guy. Can't say I blame them, though.

It's a private cemetery, so I don't travel to it much. I travel to the girls grave though, the one he raped and stabbed to death. That part of Louisiana has been made famous because of the whole Dead Man Walking crap, and film loosley based on the real events.

I am new here and just wanted to add my two cents.

I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma. Back in the late 1970's 3 girl scouts were murdered at a girl scout camp in nearby Locust grove, OK. Does anyone remember this or have you heard about it?

There is lots of speculation on the true identity of the killer to this day.

I remember "road tripping" to the camp lots of times back in high school. Very creepy place at night.....

I added this on another thread, so I'll add it here as well. The movie Dead Man Walking was based two death row inmates, combined into one character. I grew up next to the town that DR inmate Robert Lee Willie grew up in. I still remember seeing him last, when I was about 11 or so. He killed the girl about a month after I saw him last.

I've made my peace and visited his gravesite. It's in a private family cemetery, and I worked with one of his cousin's on the Lee side of the family, so she gave me the o.k. to stop by. It's a sad, pitiful way to be buried and memorialized, just my opinion. No one else is buried near the guy for about 25 feet any way you turn, except for his dad whose in an unmarked grave next to him. It's like no one wants to rest for all eternity near the guy, and honestly, I can't say I blame them.

I visited his victim's grave often, Faith Colleen Hathaway. As often in death, this girl had so much potential, so much life, so much ahead of her - only to be stolen away by this murderer and his sidekick.

It's been a while since I've made the drive to Mandeville to visit her grave. Might have to make that trip again soon, for her memory's sake. As you can imagine, not much of the family of the victim or the murderer's are too thrilled with the nun who took their story for her personal crusade, but that's entertainment.

I'm finding the short time I've been stuck on Long Island that every day our news is inundated with cars slamming into houses, teachers accused of molestation, con jobs, etc. At least in Arizona we had crazed Meth addicts running wild in the streets. Did you know that 98% of all murders in the Phoenix are are Meth related!? That's crazy!

Does the name Gina Grant ring a bell with any of you? I went to highschool with her. We were in the same graduating class (even though the murder happened when we were freshmen and she of course left the school). She was the 14 year old girl who killed her mother and then years later lied on her Havard application and had her acceptance to the University recinded. It made national news at the time and is still talked about today.

Joplin - meth is pretty bad out here in the south, too. Lots of pasture, and some of the chemicals, gasses, whatever you call them can be found in tanks at farms.

You hail from the land of the Long Island Lolita, no?

Jefe - yes, he was. You knew him? I'd be interested to see if any of the graves got any closer to him in the last five years or so, because that's the last time I rode out. It's a family cemetery (Lee-Willie Cemetery) and it is surrounded by homes. From a beautiful ranch home, to tin trailers not looking very occupied. But I know they keep a good eye on the place, keeping the curious out.

I thought that maybe they have the voided area around Willie already designated, just waiting for other family to be buried next to him, but that doesn't look likely. His mom is buried in a totally different cemetery, and his brothers have long left Folsom, last I knew. Willie had no kids. It looks almost like a warning, y'know? Like, don't do drugs, and don't rape and kill people or THIS is how you will end up. It's very sobering.
With all of the attention that movie brought, most especially bad from the community, I guess I just figured there would be some sort of huge statue or figurine for this death row inmate memorialized in film and literature. But there's not. And by the looks of his abadoned grave, I doubt the nun get's out there herself.

Last time I went, Willie had a big fire ant pile covering the top left corner of that flat headstone he has. The guy just had no remorse - he just flat didn't care. That movie made him look like he was remorseful. Believe me - he WAS NOT.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I never knew it was really a true story, and being that it was - that he was a total scumbag - right to the end.

Anyone have any books that relate to this case you can recommend to me?

And not the one written by the Nun - thanks!

We had some locals, Parkville MD., Carl Issac and his brother and cousin who went to Georgia and while there raped and murdered a family of 6.
The book Blood Brothers was written about the case and a movie was made but I'm not sure if that was the title.
Carl Issac was executed a few years ago and was at the time the longest in the country's history on death row. 20 something years.

Another thing about the famous creeps I mentioned in the beginning; I remember hearing my mother say that my father once spent several hours in Crown Hill cemetery searching for the grave of John Dillinger (he was a little kid during Dillinger's heyday and so I'm sure made an impression on him). He didn't give up until he found it. Maybe this attraction to the morbid is genetic.

I'm not sure what happened to wacky Jim Jones but I hope they don't plant Charlie here when he finally goes belly up.

I'm from Houston and the biggest one here was the Andrea Yates story. She drowned all 5 of her children in a bathtub. Horrendous! The last two tried running away from her....I cant imagine!!! Poor babies!!
It's still being debated whether or not she was insane or suffering from mental illness or just plain evil and guilty.

Prostitution Called Link in Rochester,NY Deaths
Dec 1, 1989
Someone is stalking and killing women in this city's red-light district.
Since March 1988, 12 women have been murdered: nine who the
police say were prostitutes, a homeless woman, a mildly retarded
introvert who liked to walk in her solitude and a woman whose skeletal
remains have gone unidentified.

Rochester,NY Jury Convicts Parolee In Serial Killings
Dec 14, 1990
A paroled child killer ( see below) who preyed upon street women for two years was
convicted today of the serial murders of 10 women. A Monroe County
Court jury found Arthur J. Shawcross guilty of 10 counts of second-degree murder. The jury deliberated six and a half hours over two days before returning the verdicts shortly before 11 A.M. Jurors rejected defense arguments that Mr. Shawcross was legally insane or extremely emotionally disturbed when he committed the killings.

In 1972, Arthur Shawcross confessed to strangling 8-year-old Karen Ann Hill and began
a 15-year prison sentence. At that time, he also confessed to the 1972
killing of 10-year-old Jack Blake in Watertown, but he was not prosecuted
for that slaying because authorities did not think they had sufficient evidence.

1990, Derry, NH - Pamela Smart instructs her teenage lover and his buddies to do away with her husband. Pam is serving a life sentence. Her husband, Greg Smart "resides" less than a mile from my apartment. This story was made into a few TV movies, and some lump-o-crap starring Nicole Kidman. The latest project is due on Broadway, no kidding. See link below.

I remember watching the TV mini series they made about the Steven Stayner case. "I Know My First Name Is Steven". I saw it in rerun after Cary Stayner killed those women in Yosemite. The movie was produced long before. There was one part that made me chuckle the night Steven comes home and he asks his Mother where Cary is. Her response was something to the effect, "He's camping in Yosemite. You know how much he loves it up there." I just began to laugh.

The Haysom Murders. It has also been a City Confidential Episode:

Carol Carr - I saw that episode. I felt so horribly for the poor woman, and was so happy to see that even the people that have to uphold the law went looking for loopholes so she could serve as little time as possible.

I think it's a blessing that she cannot bear the burden of caring for her other son due to the terms of her probation.

They charged her with assisted suicide because at a time before they both became bedridden, they had made a suicide pact but never went through with it. It was very heartbreaking. I cannot imagine what she had to go through and to make the decision to end their suffering. She served I believe three years and got probation. And Cary - egad. The poor Stayner parents. As if they hadn't gone through enough, then Cary goes and does what he did??

If you get a chance, read his confession. It's a long read, but so sad when you think about those women he killed...

I grew up in Lake County, and even lived in Eustis off and on over the years. This was the talk of the town for a long while. The ringleader had his death row sentence commuted to LWOP. I read an interview with the daughter, Heather not to long ago. She is an artist now and is married. I believe she lives NC. Most of the people who I have talked to believes she had more to do with the crime than she led police to believe. There were just too many questioning behaviors for her NOT to know something bad was up. I mean, WHY would your boyfriend (who your parents didn't approve of) pick you up in THEIR car. She claims she didn't know her parents were dead until halfway to Louisiana. Right.

I was living in Union, SC when Susan Smith drowned her two little boys. All of downtown had news trucks and media, so much in fact that they finally had to close the main street. You couldn't walk downtown without a reporter sticking a camera in your face asking your 'thoughts' and was I surprised a mother could do this to her children. Well, dah! Lots more went on that the media never picked up on, just as well. Don't think Union can handle another invasion as they had back then.

I live near Houston so I actually have two stories. One was a Hispanic boy who was beaten and sodomized by two white kids in Spring (a suburb of Houston). After a long recovery, the boy who was attacked just recently killed himself. It was classified as a hate crime because during the attack, the boys were yelling racial slurs. Very sad.

I don't know if this one counts, but the other story was the whole thing about the first female executed in something like 100 years in Texas. That was a HUGE deal. She murdered a man and a woman (I think) with a pick axe in Houston in the early 80s and claimed she got off on doing it. She was finally put to death for it, but everyone was up in arms about it because she said she found God and was a changed woman. I actually worked at a prison at the time and that was so not the time to work there. I guess that some people think that prison guards are the ones that sentence people to death and carry out the execution because I got idiots coming up to me left, right & center asking me to spare the woman's life or just calling me a murderer. Considering they execute inmates in a town that's about 200 miles away from where I live and work and the fact that we have nothing to do with the punishment an inmate is given, I found that highly hilarious.

Karla Faye Tucker.

Not a nice woman at all. And the story was pretty heinous. I remember reading it.

i still wonder if Kara Kopetsky was abducted (and murdered? god forbid.) by the same man who killed Kelsey Smith.

The investigators insist the two aren't related, based on the evidence. I fear that Kopetsky is dead somewhere.
