Riot triggers halt

The manufacturing halt on July 18 has kept about 3,000 employees home for five days at the time of this writing, as an investigation to the matter continues.

Maruti Suzuki said in an email Saturday:

??Following the incidents of violence and arson at the Manesar facility, the management believes that if employees are asked to report for work at the facility, their lives will be endangered.?

Worker dispute turns lethal

The riot started with just one worker and one manager. Management denies it, but the workers swear the manager used a slur against the employee. Some of the employees set fire to management offices while managers were attacked by workers .They were blocked from leaving the building. Union representatives stopped management from enacting disciplinary measures during the fight.

Worker/management conflicts are common in the nation, but they seldom escalate to this degree. A human resources supervisor, Awanish Kumar Dev, was killed in the violent riot.

Enormous investigation into event

There is a massive investigation right now being conducted by police. Indian authorities said that the attempted homicide charge will be given to all 3,000 workers, while other reports say that 100 employees have been arrested.

Cash losses

Maruti said it has no idea when the factory will open again, but it is losing $9.1 million every single day it stays shut down.

The Wall Street Journal explained that Suzuki??s operations in India consist of about half of its production outside of Japan, meaning the business is losing a lot with the shutdown also. Suzuki also has the controlling shares in Maruti. Right now, Suzuki does not know what it will do in the future despite the fact that it had plans to expand further into the country.

Suzuki managing officer Kenichi Ayukawa explained:

"We can't comment yet on whether we would slam the brake."

Finding vehicles other places

The Manesar plant made all of Suzuki??s best diesel models including the Swift Dzire sedan and the Swift hatchback. Most diesel consumers are in Asia and Europe.

A BRICS Securities Ltd. in Mumbai, Umesh Karne, explained that Maruti may have problems in the long term due to the riot.

??There??s big demand for diesel vehicles and most of Maruti??s diesel models are made here. This may also change customer perception as this is happening regularly and customers may avoid booking and waiting for Maruti cars.?
