Wow. What an amazing voice! Very unique. I've heard of Billy Holiday, but I've never listened to any of her work until now. Drugs and alchohol got her, you say? Bummer. Seems to get the best of them.

Also, Frank Sinatra smuggled heroin into the hospital for her despite his hate of class a drugs. That's what you call a true friend eh?
A bio I just read on Sinatra (I really need to work some fiction into my life, it's been bios bios and more bios lately) Says he paid for her hospital bills and funeral expenses too. I think I mentioned it in the who died broke thread.

Maybe he just figured he was keeping her comfortable....

Not only did the cops "stand guard" over Billie, she died shackled to her hospital bed...Such a sad end to such a great talent!

I recently read an interesting bit of gossip about Billie, she had a long-term affair with Tallulah Bankhead!

Diana's voice was very different than Billie's. Diana is a much better singer and 1000 times prettier than Billie, and a decent woman who has raised five children and supported many family members.
After the movie I did a lot of research on Billie only to discover I didn't think she was much of a singer, nor a looker.
Diana was wrong for the movie, they should've gotten Moms Mabley to play Billie.

    Not Diana

I keep meaning to renew my audible subscription and purchase "wishing on the moon", which is supposed to be a fairly good bio of Billie. Unfortunately I have as little time to listen as I do to read lately. I think the end would probably break my heart though.

I love listening to her versions of "Stormy Weather" and "Nice Work if You Can Get It".

I wasn't too impressed with Diana as Billie myself. I thought that movie sucked. Hopefully they'll re-do Billie's life story one day with someone better...

    Lady day

How is it possible that there is no tribute to Billie Holliday?

I recently did some research after Etta James referenced Billie as an influence. She had such a sad life - raped at age 11, hooker at age 13, mother in and out of her life. I think her sad childhood may have had something to do with her drug addicition - an escape.

Lady In Satin is one of my favorite CD's. I'm A Fool To Want You from that is just brilliant.
Today you could be standing next to someone who is trying their best not to fall apart. So whatever you do today, do it with kindness.

"You better Go Now", "You've Changed" and "Jim" are my faves. Can't sing them without sounding like her. Such a gifted artist.
