He had badly damaged knees from both football injuries and stunt man work.
He tried several times to join and even appealed to the president to waive his 4 F status.
I certainly did not agree with his position on the war in Viet Nam and the Red menace but I honestly don't think he attempted to duck service in WWII.
That certainly doesn't give him parity with Jimmy Stewart, Robert Taylor, Glen Ford, Lee Marvin, Neville Brand ( 4th most decorated soldier in WWII), Ted Williams (WWII and Korea and training missions in Viet Nam double Ace status), and a whole host of other but I think he wanted to be there.

Just watched him in a movie last night about giant ants invading LA

He was my least favorite character. He always struck me as very bland (and pretty-boy-ish). Except...there was one episode where he appeared briefly, after a few episodes where he didn't appear at all, and he gave off this weird pissed-off/moody/dark vibe for no reason.
My mom (whom I often watched Gunsmoke with) and I both remarked how odd that was. We didn't even recognize him as Thad at first; he appeared so briefly and acted so oddly.... I still wonder if maybe Ewing got a little uppity and asked for a raise, which pissed off the producers, who subsequently cut him from much of the show. Which then pissed Ewing off. Who knows.
Ramdom story: Later that night while still watching Gunsmoke we had a good-sized earthquake in our area that shook our house pretty good. Kinda freaked me out actually. My mom and I then joked about an "evil Thad" being to blame
for it (like a moody Roger Ewing is somehow a an omen of bad things to come). That subsequently became a weird in-joke with us: "Hmm, we just had an earthquake! That's odd, I don't recall seeing evil Thad on TV." Yeah, I know.
I didn't hear about his passing. May he RIP.
I been meaning to post here. I dont know what to say really other then rest in peace
