I'm one of those people who loved Miles Davis in his earlier days, but totally lost interest when he hit his 'fusion' and/or 'space music' period. Turning your back on your audience and bleating a few notes here and there may seem incredibly artistic, but I didn't find much pleasure in listening to it.

Kind Blue was recorded in 1959 and essentially was these amazing talents getting together and playing the song for the very first time. So What is one of the most well known songs. I put up two clips of So What. The first is after the song was released and does not include Bill Evans or Cannonball Adderly. But it has John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It added Wynton Kelly.

Kind of Blue is one of my favorite jazz albums. I also love Sketches of Spain---I can listen to it over and over.

Miles Davis was a musical genius---IMO, though, as an author, he needed some serious editing. I tried to read his memoirs, but geez, how many different ways can a writer use the em eff word!?!

Indeed Miles was a troubled man, and as they say, had many demons, many of his own making He used primarily cocaine and heroin, sometimes as a crutch to overcome pain in his hip. My brother-in-law worked with him for about 2 years, that's about the average length of time young musicians could deal with his erratic and impulsive behavior. Musical talent aside, he's an example of an abusive person who, because people admire his talent they overlooked his abusive behavior - which had nothing to do with drugs - but was a product of his personality. The drug use exacerbated his abusive tendencies. He didn't respect women. He was self-absorbed, rude to fans who approached him, and as a band leader, he was known to be difficult. If any of us were to act the way he did, nobody would tolerate it. He was famous, so people tolerated it.
