Always heard that he was a very troubled man, lots of personal demons, and that led to a very nasty heroin habit ?? Anybody have any insight ?

By 1979, Davis had rekindled his relationship with actress Cicely Tyson. With Tyson, Davis would overcome his drug addiction and regain his enthusiasm for music.

I'm one of those people who loved Miles Davis in his earlier days, but totally lost interest when he hit his 'fusion' and/or 'space music' period. Turning your back on your audience and bleating a few notes here and there may seem incredibly artistic, but I didn't find much pleasure in listening to it.

I have to say, Johnny, that your YouTube selection was just about perfect for someone like me.

I recently saw him in a Miami Vice (the original of course) episode; He did okay, but at certain points I could hardly make out what he was saying. Great musician though and his grave is beautiful.

A great jazz legend - loved the album 'Bitches Brew'. I remember he died around the same period as the great French star Serge Gainsbourg

    Miles Davis Jazz Genius

    Miles Davis
"Miles Davis is regarded as one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of music. He has been described as “one of the great innovators in jazz”.[49] The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll noted "Miles Davis played a crucial and inevitably controversial role in every major development in jazz since the mid-'40s, and no other jazz musician has had so profound an effect on rock. Miles Davis was the most widely recognized jazz musician of his era, an outspoken social critic and an arbiter of style—in attitude and fashion—as well as music".[50] His album Kind of Blue is the best-selling album in the history of jazz music and was praised by the United States House of Representatives to "pass a symbolic resolution honoring the masterpiece and reaffirming jazz as a national treasure."
Kind Blue was recorded in 1959 and essentially was these amazing talents getting together and playing the song for the very first time. So What is one of the most well known songs. I put up two clips of So What. The first is after the song was released and does not include Bill Evans or Cannonball Adderly. But it has John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It added Wynton Kelly.

The second link is an animated sheet music version of the original.

See the wiki link below for more.

Here are a few of his videos.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlIU-2N7WY4 (in his prime)

but the original version of this song with an animated 'follow the notes' that i guarantee you will not be able to resist. give it two minutes.

Kind of Blue is one of my favorite jazz albums. I also love Sketches of Spain---I can listen to it over and over.

Miles Davis was a musical genius---IMO, though, as an author, he needed some serious editing. I tried to read his memoirs, but geez, how many different ways can a writer use the em eff word!?!

Good post. Miles needed a nod on this board.

Indeed Miles was a troubled man, and as they say, had many demons, many of his own making He used primarily cocaine and heroin, sometimes as a crutch to overcome pain in his hip. My brother-in-law worked with him for about 2 years, that's about the average length of time young musicians could deal with his erratic and impulsive behavior. There are several good write-ups of his life, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Davis. Several years back, Don Cheadle created and played the lead role in "Miles Ahead", which sheds some light on a period in his life: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790770/

Musical talent aside, he's an example of an abusive person who, because people admire his talent they overlooked his abusive behavior - which had nothing to do with drugs - but was a product of his personality. The drug use exacerbated his abusive tendencies. He didn't respect women. He was self-absorbed, rude to fans who approached him, and as a band leader, he was known to be difficult. If any of us were to act the way he did, nobody would tolerate it. He was famous, so people tolerated it.
