    Lee Remick

Lee Ann Remick (December 14, 1935 – July 2, 1991) was an American film and television actress. Among her best-known films are Anatomy of a Murder (1959), Days of Wine and Roses (1962), and The Omen (1976).

Remick was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, the daughter of Margaret Patricia (née Waldo), an actress, and Francis Edwin "Frank" Remick, who owned a department store. She attended the Swaboda School of Dance and studied acting at Barnard College and the Actors Studio, making her Broadway theatre debut in 1953 with Be Your Age.

Remick made her film debut in Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd. While filming the movie in Arkansas, Remick lived with a local family and practiced baton twirling so that she would be believable as the teenager who wins the heart of Lonesome Rhodes (played by Andy Griffith).

After appearing as Eula Varner, the hot-blooded daughter-in-law of Will Varner (Orson Welles) in 1958's The Long, Hot Summer, she appeared in These Thousand Hills as a dance hall girl. Remick came to prominence as a rape victim whose husband is tried for killing her attacker in Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder. Lee made a second film with Elia Kazan called Wild River (1960), co-starring with Montgomery Clift and Jo Van Fleet, where she gives an understated yet effective performance.

In 1962, she was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress for her performance as the alcoholic wife of Jack Lemmon in Days of Wine and Roses.

When Marilyn Monroe was fired during the filming of the comedy Something's Got to Give, the studio announced that Remick would be her replacement. However, co-star Dean Martin refused to continue, saying that while he admired Remick, he had signed on to do the picture strictly to work with Monroe.

Remick appeared in the 1964 Broadway musical Anyone Can Whistle, written by Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, a highly unconventional show that ran for only a week. Remick's performance is captured on the original cast recording. This began a lifelong friendship between Remick and Sondheim, and she later appeared in the landmark 1985 concert version of his musical Follies.

Remick received a Tony Award nomination in 1966 for her role as a blind woman terrorized by drug smugglers in the thriller Wait Until Dark (the character played by Audrey Hepburn in the film version).

She co-starred with Gregory Peck in the 1976 horror film The Omen, in which her adopted son turns out to be the Anti-Christ.

Remick later appeared in several made-for-TV movies or miniseries (for which she earned seven Emmy nominations). Most were of a historical nature, including two noted miniseries: Ike, in which she portrayed Kay Summersby, alongside Robert Duvall as General Dwight Eisenhower, Haywire where she compellingly portrayed Margaret Sullavan and Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill where she portrayed the title character, Winston Churchill's American mother.

Remick's first husband was Bill Colleran, an American television producer, with whom she had a son Matthew and daughter Kate. Her second husband was British film producer Kip Gowans. She died on July 2, 1991 at age 55 at her home in Los Angeles of kidney and lung cancer.

Remick was cremated at Westwood Memorial Park.

Remick has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6104 Hollywood Boulevard.

Remick was the subject of The Go-Betweens' first single, "Lee Remick", as well as Hefner's 1998 single of the same title (the two songs are unrelated).

You're welcome! Actually I found two different versions, kidney and lung cancer and kidney and liver cancer. I'm not quite sure, but I believe that it was kidney and lung cancer. If anybody knows more, correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for adding Lee Remick here, NL. What a beautiful, CLASSY woman. I don't think she ever made a bad movie--or rather, I should say, she made any movie totally watchable. She broke my heart in Days of Wine and Roses, and scared me to death in The Omen. Remick was the real deal.

Elia Kazan was actually looking at Lee for the part of Deanie in Splendor In the Grass, but she got pregnant and couldn't take the role.

It was just plain kidney cancer, nothing more. It did later spread to the liver, lungs, and bones, but of course that doesn't mean it was liver, lung, or bone cancer: cancer's always named for where it originates, not where it spreads. (This is vitally important, since each type of cancer responds to different doses and combinations of drugs. Kidney cancer that's spread to the lungs still acts like kidney cancer.) Unfortunately some journalists don't see the difference and write articles confusing the matter.

I just knew if I waited long enough, someone else would do this thread. Lee Remick is my favorite actress of all time. Period. There was nobody like her before, and I don't think anybody will ever take her place. I was 13 when I saw "Days of Wine and Roses", and it just started from there. I was there for her last public appearance when she got her star on Hollywood Boulevard, and to this day it just tears me up when I describe that day to anybody. And yet, if I wasn't there I would have been WAY more destraught when she finally left us. I didn't want her to leave - she was only 55 for crying out loud - but I didn't want her to suffer either. On the day she left us, my boss took me into the break room in order to gently tell me what had happened. He only got as far as "We heard on the news......" I cut him off, "She died, didn't she?" He said yes. I just took a breath of air and said, "Thank God it's over now." Hard to believe that was 18 years ago. Damn, I still miss her......that's all I can say........

I know that unlike most actresses, she came from a priviledged background and yet I always found her a little 'ordinary', common looking.
I remember reading somewhere that JFK made a pass at her; supposedly since both were from the same area he thought she'd be a pushover for him. She wasn't.

I think Lee Remick was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Beautiful skin, face, hair and her eyes were amazing. A natural real American beauty she was - don't make 'em like that anymore. Now it is all about DUI's, plastic surgery, tummy tucks, boxtox, blah blah blah.

55? omg - bless her soul. I agree - no one has been or EVER will be like her. She had such a gentle, sweet, feminine way about her, I hope she was happy in life.

I completely agree, in fact I thought she had very very classy looks, far from common. She brought a weight and dignity to her films that few actresses have pulled off through an entire career as she did, before or since. She is sorely missed.

    This..

No movie can compare to this one, especially if you are an alchoholic and/or codependent. This movie still can speak volumes to people, even though its dated. It is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen.
