It sounds like you have no credit because you have none established, not because you ruined it. If this is the case, I'd try going to Best Buy & other places that sell computers & apply for a credit card. All they can say is no, they can't kill ya! Or, Christmas is right around the corner, maybe everyone could pitch in & get you one!

If these suggestions fail, I would go with AXL's recommendation, save up.

Good luck Socks!

Sounds like it's just a pipe dream for now until you can work out a payment plan to ditch your current debt which will allow you to get out of the vicious circle you've just described.

Break the chain and you'll be able to save up to buy a laptop without getting yourself back into the position you're in now.

any one work for dell or mac that want to hook me up? hahaha i will give you free necklaces for life!!! or a really long time! hahaha
Why don't you rent to own from Aaron Sales? You don't need credit to do that and the payments shouldn't be more tha a bit over $100 per month for 12 months and it's yours. I know that's high, but if you don't have credit, it's better than nothing.

Does it have to be a laptop? I sware Corbin has the damn things laying all over my house waiting to be fixed! I will see if he can't hook you up with one, that if anything is affordable for you!

Don't check cards also help you establish credit? I dunno, no credit here either.

My boyfriend got me my laptop on ebay for like 100 bucks, refurbished. It's an HP and it works for me. You can get a debit card and try to find a refurbished laptop online.

No, Check Visa & Master cards are not considered a revolving line of credit unfortunatley.I built my credit up by getting a Speigel Catalog credit line, it started small I think it was maybe a $300 credit limit and I bought a couple items and made payments to them ( just to show a pattern) then I paid the high interest bastard off! After that I applied for another small credit card ( not a magazine one) and so on...

I seen a commercial on TV and you could get a PC or laptop and it did not matter what kind of credit you had as long as you had a checking account and phone line...I can't remember now who it was though.

ya. i am working on just establishing credit right now. i got my first card! woohoo!! $500 limit, but i paid a stupid cigarette ticket with that. best buy wouldnt even allow me one because of my lack of credit. my car payments arent in my name so that doesnt show up as anything. just helps my moms credit look good. haha. i suppose i will just have to save and wait.

i would prefer a laptop because i dont have room in my place for a desktop and need the option to kind of move around a bit with it. (i know that sounds bad but i pretty much live out of my own room in my moms place) los angeles is not easy on rent thats for sure.

i NEVER thought of a rental place. hmmm i never heard of the ones you guys suggested except for Rent-A-Center.
i have been a cash girl my whole life. i dont like not being able to hold or see the money i am spending. but as i am getting older i realize the NEED to credit. so annoying.

I recently had to buy one and gave my old one to my nephew. We had one we gave to the Salvation Army a few months ago...

You're doing good if you have a credit card. Just pay it on time and your credit will grow. Check out the rental places, they are more expensive but you'll get your laptop. A lot of region-wide stores will sometimes have easy payment plans and it's easier to get credit through them. Also, have you tried for a Wal-Mart credit card? Sears is also pretty easy to get credit through. They were my first credit card many years ago.

Do you have a job other than making jewelry? The reason I ask is because if you do and your check is deposited directly into your checking account, the bank might be willing to loan you the money and then transfer the payments from your account each month. BTW my sister bought her daughter a Toshiba (sp) laptop for $600. I don't know where she bought it, but I could find out. That's not bad at all. It's not Dell or HP, but it is a laptop.

I believe the tv commercial is Blue Hippo which was mentioned earlier. They may be more expensive but ask if they help build credit too. It may be worth it.

Check out the refurbished section of Dell and them. Sometimes you get really cheap ones that run under $500. I believe you can apply for credit with them too. Try it, you never know who may say yes.

Geeks.com is a good place to find quality refurbished laptops. A lot of them are off-lease from major corporations, and have had decent care.

The bottom line is if you don't want to seek credit from the places mentioned (sears and wal-mart are the easiest to get) or try for a bank card you will just have to bite the bullet and save.

Our neighbors bought a laptop from Rent a center and the were very happy. I am not sure of the terms but their payment seemed to be pretty low.

i need a laptop too. our family computer sucks and is full of viruses and soemthing ha[ppened and we cant have a printer, oh and our microsoft word doesn't work.

when i tried explaining to my mom the situation and telling her we needed a new computer or i needed my own laptop(which would be better because then i could carry it around and work on stuff when i needed to instead of waiting for someone to be done with the computer and me staying up until 4 or 5 in the morning doing homework or something) she said she'd think about it.
so im crossing my fingers that this christmas i'll get one. if not then im returning all the gifts i get.

i don't get it with my mom. for one christmas i asked for a digital camera, i got a straightener instead. the next christmas i asked for a laptop and i got my camera. for my graduation i asked for a laptop knowing i'd need one for college and i got a car.
its weird.

i think i might try wal mart or sears.
i REALLY want a mac but thats probably impossible right now.

I'd seriously consider buying a refurbished laptop. Working for an Electronics Repair company, I can tell you that there are a lot of bugs that products have during their first manufacturing run.

A repair facility like ours takes a product that hasn't even been out in the field yet (failed quality inspection at the plant) and repair it often using superior components than what were originally put in and would have the latest updates in configuration, etc. and all will sell at a much lower price.

Yep! I'm a computer tech, so I bought a refurbished HP desktop a few years back. If nothing else, I figured I'd be able to fix anything that was wrong. Best PC I've ever owned, including ones I've built myself. What happens with computers sometimes, is people buy more than they need, they can't figure it out, and they pitch enough of a fit that HP/Dell (whomever) just takes it back.

Dell auction dot com. My husband got mine for less than $300 with shipping. It has a lot of bells and whistles, but you can find less fancy ones cheaper and just add stuff if you need more ram, etc.

Don't know what you have to work with but keep any eye out for the Black Friday sales and the before Christmas sales. I keep running across articles that are talking about prices being slashed deeply due to the mess with the economy. Also, after Christmas sales.

It's a thought.

Help me to create a US map graphic to insert in a word document.

Does anyone know how I can create a graphic of a map of America with, let's say thumb tacks, to mark respondents locations? I need to paste it into a business proposal that some of you responded to. I have the information in an excel spreadsheet. Huge thanks for your help!

Do you have the map?

If not, I can do a screen capture of one and save it as a jpeg.

Then, using Paint, the location "tags" could be added and saved, then it could be inserted into the Word doc.

No, I haven't started that project yet. I was just hoping I could find a way to not have to manually enter every location.

It could possibly be automated with some scripting.

I would get a USB flash drive. They're cheap, and you'll probably use it again anyway. Yes, there's a special USB transfer cable you can buy, but still...the flash drive is cheaper.

Check the Apple website under clearance; the EOL (end of life) computers are going for several hundred dollars less than what they retailed for a couple of weeks ago. They'll be the polycarbonate (black & white) Macbooks. Financing for Apple is done through Juniper credit; it's a credit card that gives you 90 days interest free. If you live near an Apple store, check with them to see if they have any EOL in stock, otherwise you'll just have to get one online if you go that route. The refurbished Macbooks are computers that have been returned because people decided they wanted a different model, it wasn't for them, or yes, refurbished. The older ones have Firewire ports while the new ones don't, so if you have an external that uses Firewire, that may be important to you.

Shut down the computer and re-start it. If you're asked again which mode you'd like to start Windows in, choose Normal mode.

First you can try forcing your computer to start normally. You can do this by going to the boot option menu for Windows by tapping F8 repeatedly while the computer is starting. From here try selecting boot normally to see if that gets it back into its regular startup.

You can also make the computer think it shut down wrong. Turn off the computer by holding down the power button for several seconds. Make sure all your windows are closed and any documents you were working on, have been saved before you hit the power button. Then after the computer shuts down, hit the power button again. It might then ask you if you want to start the computer in safe mode, or the normal Windows mode. Choose the normal Windows mode.
Not to start sounding like the computer security manager that I am, (even though it's my profession ) once you get your computer to start in normal mode, you might want to run a virus and spyware scan, to make sure your system is clean. When a computer starts in safe mode, it's because it thinks something happened to it to make it feel "unsafe".
Hope this helps!
