Several people have posted online stories about their visits to the store and most say it is a dump and leaks pretty bad inside when it rains. If you look at the ceiling in some episodes you can see missing tiles.
I kind of like the old man, I think he is the type that if you are on his good side, no problems. I liked Rick at the start but don't care for the way he makes really low offers on items that one of his so-called buddies/experts just said on camera was worth $$$. The son looks like they should start calling him "Even Bigger Hoss" Geez, he better start running some laps around the store or the old man will live longer than him. Chumlee, I just don't know. People that have met him either say it is an act or that you could bring in a rock from the parking lot and tell him it was a part of the Berlin Wall and he would give you $$$ for it.
Chumlee comes across as a drooling idiot. I'm not sure he's capable of faking it.
I don't think Chum is stoopid. I find him cute and endearing.
Has anyone noticed that they have an 'expert' for everything???
Wanna see my grandkids?
We like the show but we think some these people should have attempted to do Ebay or craigslist before taking some of these lowball buys at the pawn shop. I know some people are not internet savvy or just take Rick's word for it.
One thing is for sure, if an item is aired on an episode it will have a buyer quickly because of the exposure.
The Old Man is very Funny. Rick annoys the crap out of me. Big Hoss & Chumley are complete idiots..I say give the Old Man his own Show
Selling something to a pawn shop is not the same as selling at auction. If I bring my great-grandmother's Faberge egg to the pawn shop, and the store's consulting expert declares its worth to be $100,000, that's an appraised amount of its market value. The only way I could hope to get that amount would be to place it up for auction (which could be on-line such as eBay or an actual bricks-and-mortar auction). The pawn guys wouldn't go near offering me that amount, since they need to make a profit for themselves when they in turn sell it. So, yes, they're going to "low-ball" me; but that's what they have to do to stay in business! (And to keep the Old Man living in that fine mini-mansion that was seen in one episode!)
A few days ago, I discovered that the Lifetime Channel is now showing repeat episodes of both "Pawn Stars" and "American Pickers". Somehow, that seems like a more logical fit. I never quite understood how either show related to the History Channel.
Have they ever shown what happened to stuff they get? How much does the stuff end up selling for and whatnot? My husband and I are always saying it would be interesting to see that.
A reason that some low-ball offers are taken is that the producers will "bump up" the amount that the seller walks away with. It makes a better show if the stars look like winners.
Also, in the background of the Dylan episode, you can see a guard keeping another person from approaching the singer while he is with Chumlee. The set-ups just make the show worse, in my opinion.
There are a few things that always surprise me about this show.
I am always shocked how many people take the word of Rick's "buddies." Where else in the world would you let the buyer's friend set the price?
Then, once they get the estimate, why do they accept the lowball offer from the pawn shop, which is at most half of the estimate, usually less. Take that thing home and put in on ebay! (I'm sure they're in a hurry, but still.)
And does no one research the items before they bring them in? If I think there's a shot I'm going to end up on TV, I don't want to be the fat middle aged lady who looks like an idiot. I can't fix everything, but at least I could be the fat, middle aged lady who knows what she's talking about!

Has any of these guys ever mentioned a wife or girlfriend?
Rick is married. I heard him bring up his wife one time when him and his son went to look at a hand-crank washing machine.
Some people have posted that they have met Rick's wife and the son (Hoss) looks like her.
Hoss is married too.
The pawn shops around here look at ebay to get their offering price. My dad and I took some sports stuff to the big one near me and the dude turned right around and pulled up ebay on the computer. I could even see the screen and look at the same prices he was seeing...
Regarding Chumlee - a friend of mine went to the pawn shop and ended up being an "extra" in an episode (someone shown browsing in the store). She met Chumlee and said that he is NOT an idiot in real life. It's just an act.
You know...I don't know why, but I love this show. I guess its just mindless entertainment and sometimes that's a-okay! :-)
The other night Rick was holding a gold coin and in the close up his fingernails were very dirty. If you are going to be on a reality show clean your nails. Gross.
I just moved to Vegas - I went to the Pawn shop and it was a real dump. They had some cool stuff, but it was really packed. My husband is a huge fan of the show - he kept telling me,"This thing was on the show, that thing was on the show, etc." I was like,"Shut up and let me look dammit."
Purchase 'Not Illegal,' Producer Says

The stars of the History Channel's reality show 'Pawn Stars' (History).
Sources confirm to FOX411 that the stars of the History Channelâ??s reality show â??Pawn Starsâ? have purchased a guidance system for a missile used on F-4 Phantom fighter planes.
TMZ originally reported that Rick Harrison and his team made the deal for an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile last week, although the missile did not contain a live war head.
According to the website for the U.S. Air Force, the AMRAAM missile is a medium-range, active radar homing air-to-air missile, which uses high-explosive blast fragmentation.
It weighs 335 pounds and has a range of more than 20 miles. It was deployed in September of 1991.
The Air Force lists the price at $386,000. The amount Harrison paid for the missile system was not immediately known.
So is it legal for a pawn shop to purchase a missile system?
â??As far as we know, the missile is 100 percent not illegal,â? "Pawn Stars" producer Brent Montgomery tells FOX411. â??One time, a grenade came in and Rick was like, â??You have to get that out of my shop right now!â?? It wasnâ??t live, but you never know. I canâ??t have people thinking that they can take grenades into the shopâ??ballistic missiles, OKâ??but no grenades!â?
Several items from the Department of Defense and other scrap from the military is available for legal purchase via live and Internet auction. In fact, military enthusiasts can buy scrap from the government itself at govsales.gov, the official site to buy U.S. Government property.
But one person who has sold his share of military scrap says this purchase is unique.
â??That is a weird thing, even for me,â? Alex Kramer, vice-president of International Military Antiques, tells FOX411 about the â??Pawn Starsâ? gangâ??s purchase. â??Iâ??m not sure if itâ??s something that someone would want to put on display in their yard, but people collect all sorts of things. The person who would want this would be similar to someone who collects the first Apple computersâ??they appreciate the technology and its place in history.â?

'Pawn Stars' Buy MISSILE GUIDANCE SYSTEM!!!!
3/15/2011 12:45 AM PDT by TMZ Staff
Talk about going ballistic ... TMZ has learned the guys from "Pawn Stars" have purchased a guidance system for a missile often used on F-4 Phantom fighter planes!!!
Sources connected to the deal tell us Rick Harrison and his team made the deal for an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile last week ... along with the "front part" of the missile.
And before you freak out -- we're told the "front part" of the missile did NOT contain a live war head ... obviously.
Our source could not confirm how much cash Rick shelled out for the parts ... but we're guessing they don't come cheap.
So far, no word on the identity of the person who was running around Las Vegas with pieces to a missile ... but we're told the deal was "100% legal."

Chumlee will kill us all.
Now be honest, when you saw the headline about one of them being arrested, which one did you think it was?
I love the show and enjoy seeing all the stuff they bring in, especially if it has an historical bent. The old man is a laugh. How can so many people bring stuff in and be ignorant of the value? If I was going to sell something that had some value to a pawn shop I would do some basic research and get an idea. The experts they bring in generally have some great information to share and they seem pretty authentic to me. I always laugh when an expert appraises an item to be worth, say, $5,000 and Rick asks, "So how much do you want for it?" and the seller responds "$5,000", dumbass.

Stopped in about a year ago while in Vegas.. It' a tiny place but a few interesting items.. We just happened upon it and it wasn't busy at the time..
I just started to watch this show. First off, love the old man and his son both put up with no crap from the other two. I recently seen a show where the son bought tattoo equipment lowballed the guy then took it all and got a new tattoo. When he got back he got his behind chewed out and had to make up the difference.
I have seen some people who come in and they do get lowballed. It just amazes me how much of a profit they make but have no problem with ripping off the other person..I keep yelling at the screen to sell it on Ebay..LOL Just my opinion here.
But for entertainment I watch it....

Well that pretty much says it all! What a charming guy a high school drop out that decided to rip people off and because he was successful at it went in with his dad to continue the family tradition of ripping people off. I've seen the show they are very personable and usually make the customer feel good before they lower the boom. The idea of a pawn shop is a last resort for people desperate for money and they know it. The old man is the worst he dosen't want to give anything for an item and I find him more arrogant than rick. Incidentally, another show Hard Core Pawn is more realistic. This show is in Detroit and the people who pawn are real desperate and often threaten the owners. It's more realistic than the good buddies in Vegas.

I agree with you they are very personaable and nice but then remember you always kiss before you get screwed (except in porn but that's a separate thread).
I've had occasion to use a Pawn Shop. There was this one lady next to me taking the jewelry off herself to try and sell. Unfortunately alot of her jewelry was plated. This Pawn Shop only takes jewelry to do guitars and all that other stuff you have to go to a lovely little city in Jersey called Newark (Sorry I just had a little taste of vomit in my mouth).
Think about one of the worst cities in your State and you pretty much have the idea what Newark is like. There are worse cities in Jersy but Newark is definately in the top 10.

Must be what that line is all about in the movie "Death becomes her"
she says she never blamed him for leaving her "She's a woman, a woman
from Newark for God's sake."

On that clip did you notice his answer to how Pawning works.
He said you drop off an object for 120 days and if you don't pick it up
it's his.
He wanted 10% a month isn't that 120% a year or is it alot more?
He must have been accused of usery or something because on a recent shoe when he was asked about pawning he was only asking 3 or 4% a month.
At the pawn shop I go to if toy can't pay what you owe in 120 days you can pay the interest and you won't have abandondoned it.
Their annual rate is 44.44% anually.

We will be in Vegas in June. My husband really wants to go to that shop because he is a big fan of the show. There are a million other things I'd rather do but God knows I have dragged him all over creation. I guess it is his turn.
Wanna see my grandkids?
No, since the pawn period expires after 3 months they get 30% (10% per month) maximum for the item (plus whatever they sell it for if the person pawning defaults). After that, they own it. However, they didn't mention whether the interest was compounded.
As for 3-4%, maybe they have dropped their rates or, that above a certain value the item earns a lesser interest rate.

I watched this show a couple of times and hated it.
I just saw the episode with the old Lincoln. He says he can put 10K in it and sell for 170K. He tries to talk the guy down from 100K and gets mad because he won't deal? Now he knows how the people he cheats everyday feels. Just because you can don't make it right! How do these people sleep at night?
I just saw a clip from last nights show. A customer brings in a counterfeit $10 bill and Rick gets all nervous like oooohhhh I don't even think it's legal to own this and he tells the guy to bring it to the Secret Service. That's really funny about him not wanting to buy anything that might be "illegal" to own. Ah Rick aren't you forgetting that you quit high school because you were making $2000 a week selling COUNTERFEIT GUCCI BAGS?

here is a great background on how fake the show is at times. (hell, take away the wikipedia and then lets see how well 'Rick' or 'Big Hoss' could describe the background of an item)
