I like that one too. What a fucked up family dynamic. And I know from fucked up family dynamics.

I read every word of every post and think your opinions are thoughtful and excellent and actually the best info I have read anywhere.

I meant no offense, but mentioning that topic in the middle of any thread instantly turns into yet another debate. this is an interesting case & I don't want it to turn into another political thread. You see? Thanks for removing it. I will edit out that portion of the article.
RaRa,
I totally understand- my sincere apologies. I too find this a very fascinating case. I was looking over some of the attached links and saw much information and background that I had never been aware of before. Were some of these helpful in researching the background about Diane and her psychological profile? ITA with you that she had some very serious underlying issues and that they were showing up constantly in her bizarre and erratic behavior. Do you have any idea what is going on with her husband and/or other family members? Last I read, her husband was in continued deep denial, even after her toxicology report proved that she was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Thank you for bringing forth many things which were certainly unknown by me, and probably by many others as well- it is most appreciated.

Holy hell - I just read this article as well as the Fuzzy Wuzzy one in the other link. How can the two stories be so completely different??? Why in the HELL would her brother not have called 911 or even her husband instead of going to look for her himself? That sounds to me like maybe they were used to her drinking & driving and figured it was maybe just gonna be a bad one, this time. In the NY Mag, her friend is quoted as saying how smart she was - what? Smart people can't be raging alcoholics? She went out for groceries and came home with a new Jeep? Man, this story is nuts!
The NY Mag says her husband has raised the funds to have her blood retested. Hmmmm.....
There must have been a secret FAR, FAR bigger than her being an alcoholic and pot user for her brother and sister in law to cover up for her, and to continue to do so. She killed all three of their children! I would be spilling everything! Unless...it is somehow very damning to them as well. If so, my question of course is what?
And I don't understand how the sister in law was able to get away with not talking to the police. Sounds like the police didn't even push it.
I am interested in more of their history. In one of the theories I copied/pasted from the linked case site I noticed they brought up the strangeness of Diane's cell phone bill being in her maiden name. I've seen their marriage listed as being around seven years? Why would anything be in her maiden name? Why would her husband not know her better?
i agree that is must be something wild for them to all lie so vividly.
And who was the man she called? or did the children call him by mistake? Like Fuzzy pointed out, that would have been om her recent calls.
The fact that she exited the car & placed the phone on the median...was that seen on camera or by witnesses? How do they know she didn't toss it? If she did place it, that seems like another sign of mania.
I dunno how they knew she placed the phone on the median. This whole thing is so intriguing. It seemed to me that her husband didn't really KNOW her at all. The NY Mag talks about how she kept her feelings to herself; seems their conversations were pretty banal (like the house needs painted, etc). The phone bill in the maiden name, too? I need more info!!
Who is FuzzyWuzzy? What are his credentials? Hes anonymous he could just me making shit up.
Please no he was a bear who had no hair jokes.

My God, what a horrible story! I don't even know where to begin. To read some of the things her husband said, it sounds like he really didn't know his wife at all. What she did is horrible and there is no excuse for it, but this woman clearly had serious issues that were being ignored or justified away. It sounds like to me that she was the main breadwinner and for the most part a single parent. The husband worked nights and spent his weekends hunting and fishing. He pretty well had it made while she was alive because he had the financial security of her well paying job and very little responsibilities. He wasn't going to argue with her because he was perfectly content to let her do it all. I am sorry for his losses, but he sounds incredibly selfish. Diane's mother abandoned her family when Diane was nine. Most people who grew up with an unstable home life want desperately to grow up and have the perfect little family. I am only speculating because I don't know any of these people, but Diane sounds like someone with mental illness who numbed her emotional pain with alcohol and marijuana. Her marriage sure didn't sound very fulfilling and she was probably stressed out and depressed. I am in no way defending what she did, but something got her to the point she was. I can see why the Bastardi family feels anger and disgust toward the people who defend the woman who destroyed their family. I am not sure what I think of the Hances. I realize that Diane was Warren's sister, but I would have a hard time defending the person who caused the death of my three children. Just a sad tragedy all around.
This story completely blows my mind. I've read quite a bit and still can't get my head around the whole thing. Does anyone think that Diane was having an affair with the mystery man whose number was on her cell phone? Maybe the kids overheard her talking to him and she didn't want them telling their parents plus her husband. That, plus maybe the guy didn't want to continue the relationship and the combination of the two facts made her suicidal and pushed her over the edge?

I just watched the HBO documentary, "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane". It supposedly investigates the "mystery" of the Taconic Tragedy.
What mystery? She was drunk and high. Period/Amen. They had interviews with her in laws that said she had a full time (great) job, and was a great mother, and still had time to make a Shutterfly album of pictures of the kids.
Yeah, that's what functioning alcoholics do.
I did find out one thing I didn't know - her husband worked overnights. I don't know how he can say with such certaintly she never or very rarely drank. When your spouse works overnights, and you're high functioning, it's very easy to hide.
I walked away from the doc not feeling any different about Diane Schuler. Yes, she may have been a great mom most of the time, but she wasn't on THAT DAY. On THAT DAY she killed 7 innocent people. I feel bad for the other families, including Diane's brother (who did not take part in it) who lost his 3 daughters.
I think it is ridiculous for the husband to state that Diane never drank. Like you pointed out, he worked nights and was gone a lot. He doesn't have a clue what she did when he wasn't around. I suspect that he defends her out of his own guilt because he probably knew she was unhappy. They may have even had an argument before leaving the campground to go back home and he feels guilty about it. He is probably like a lot of other people that suddenly turn someone into a saint when they die, no matter what they were like when they were still alive. No wonder the Bastardi family is so disgusted with him.
Then what's the excuse for the rest of his family? His entire family feels like he does. The Bastardi's have every right to be disgusted. I think that if he just said, "You know what, I can't defend her anymore. She made a giant mistake, and I am so sorry" and I'd have so much more respect/sympathy for him.
I don't know any excuses for the rest of the family. Maybe they know the husband is already heartbroken and they don't want to cause him more pain by saying bad things about his wife. They probably also don't want to speak ill of the mother of their surviving grandson. I think that rather than defending her and trying to make her out to be perfect, maybe it would be a good idea to not say anything at all. Their denials just cause the Bastardis more grief and anger.
Did you all hear about what the widower of Diane Schuler is doing NOW on the 2nd anniversary of this horrible event? What DOES one do when in total denial about a spouse's emotional, substance and alcohol abuse problems that caused the deaths of innocent people (including one's relatives)?
SUE EVERYONE IN SIGHT!!!
YES, according to Dan Schuler and his vampire lawyer, the State of NY is liable due to "confusing road signs." Worse, Diane's brother, who owned the minivan that Diane obliterated along with his daughters, her daughter, and the Bastardis, Mr. Longo, and THEIR vehicle, is somehow "vicariously liable."
What a JERK.
Denying his late wife was a hot mess (perhaps behind his back) is one thing, and might be forgiven. Making everyone else pay for HER mistakes or evil acts (depending on your PoV) is quite ANOTHER.

OK so I read up on this earlier today- first we'd heard of it over here was when the parents of the girls that died announced her pregnancy- and whatever sympathy I had for this guy who lost his wife, daughter and nieces has now completely evaporated. Grief can cause him to go into denial about his wife and what condition she was in, but this is evil. Pure evil.
This guy isn't real bright is he? Everytime he opens his mouth and insists that his wife wasn't drunk or on drugs, he makes himself look completely stupid and just pisses people off more at him. Now he wants to sue the parents of the three little girls that his drunk wife murdered? I wonder what he thinks he will gain by doing that? He sounds like a selfish asshole.
I watched the HBO Documentary last night (There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane) and they showed a picture of Diane dead....I'll have to see if I can find it cause I know all you death hags would like to see it I'm going on the hunt now!!
I hope you can find the picture. I am sure there are several of us who would want to see it.
GRRRR!!!! Haven't been able to find the picture anywhere! I've been looking for a posting of the whole documentary too because then you could "fast forward" to that point of the show but so far all I have found are the trailers for the show I will not give up the search tho!!!
I fucking hate her husband!!!!!!!!! He's suing his brother in law, the one who lost his 3 daughters!!!!

His BIL has been pretty quite on this entire issue. I wonder if his anger towards him has anything to do with why they are all covering it all up.
Well, on the bright side...we have the court documents to look forward to! Cause it's all coming out now!
Ooops, I see I'm late to the game. Every witness to that crash has said Diane was looking dead ahead. She was not looking at any signs, or even if anyone was anywhere near her car. The signs wouldn't have mattered, and how come nobody else killed 8 people on that highway if the signs are so off?
She was drunk plain and simple.
I have it on my DVR, hopefully sometime tonight I'll at least take a pic of the TV - it didn't look like her at all.
nevermind..... can't post pics like that.

Um...we don't ever post pics like that...a link is nice with a warning.
Not in the middle of a thread. Unless the thread begins with dead pics & there is a warning in the thread title, there are never pics like that in a thread. If someone wants to add them during a discussion like this, they link to them.
OK then, I guess I'll wait for you guys to find links.
thanks so much stacebabe!!!! I already deleated the show off my DVR before I thought of posting pics on here...thanks again!! And you're right, it doesn't look like her at all...sad really.
And I can't believe her husband is suing the brother!!!!!!!! How does he think he has ANY right to do that?! I think the husband knows something about this accident that he has never shared (and her sister too) because neither of them seem to show any emotion except anger when people say she was drunk/high. I get being angry if you truly believe that a person you know/knew as to not drink or do drugs and suddenly people are telling you they were completely drunk and high; but I've NEVER seen them shed a single tear when they talk about the kids or Diane's death. They are such a weird family...suck it up, accept the truth and MOVE ON!!!!
I'm wondering why her job status was never mentioned? She had a 100K a year job, and was the primary breadwinner. Was her job in good standing? If it wasn't that's a good reason for suicide. The entire thing reeks of suicide. Her leaving her phone at the side of the road, etc... etc....
I'm apparently not allowed to post the pictures because I can't warn in the thread title, but I'm glad you caught them!
So the Bastardis and Mr. Longo, who were driving on the proper side of the road and not drunk/high as a kite are sued? Dan is batshit crazy!
"What if the Hokey Pokey is what it's really all about?" Jimmy Buffett
Actually he's not suing the Bastardi's and Longo - He's suing his own brother in law, Diane's brother Warren Hance. The man who lost his 3 daughters at the hands of Diane.
It just sounds all so very very wrong....how on earth does he figure he was responsible? I'm baffled.
I Just don't know about this one.. everyone who saw her that morning denies she was drunk.. I think there was something very wrong with her.. She vomited twice on the side of the road and stopped for Tylenol. Maybe he diabetes? Doesn't symptoms of diabetes issues mimic high BAC?

I don't think it would take long to get drunk on vodka if you're not a big drinker. So if she was drinking on the way, and smoking pot, well I can see how you could get messed up pretty quickly. The spin from the documentary is she had an abscessed tooth, and they think she drank/smoked to kill the pain. Admittedly, it does seem off that no matter what kind of pain you're in you'd choose that method, but they're also saying maybe the tooth caused some kind of delirium. I would think her tooth would've been an apparent problem at the campsite beforehand though.
Junior Death Hag
Technically, he can sue because the vehicle she was driving at the time of the accident belonged to his brother-in-law.
The poor guy... I hate these pointless lawsuits. Another example, the train engineer trying to sue the parents of the kid who jumped in front of his train to commit suicide. All it does is make these people have to relive a trauma they've already been through.
The People You Meet In Hell website had a posting by someone that hinted at the fact that Diane's hubby isn't the sharpest pencil in the box. This person went on to say that perhaps that's why she selected him as a husband so she could basically do as she pleased without him catching on.
He really needs to step back, get his head out of his ass and accept the truth.
"What if the Hokey Pokey is what it's really all about?" Jimmy Buffett
I think this jackass is missing the financial security that he had when Diane was alive and being the main breadwinner. He's just looking for a big settlement. I can't imagine being heartless enough to sue the parents of the children that his wife killed. They should counter sue him. What a mess!
