According to his publicist, he was supposed to be in a meeting 40 minutes ago.

I was always partial to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and Sundown. As for the rest of it...bleh.

I hope it isn't true. I have never been one for folk music but I always liked his voice.

The Vancouver Sun was also reporting he'd died. But I see that story on their website "is no longer available."

Apparently at least one of the sources for this story is Ronnnie Hawkins. Here's the obit in a Sault Ste. Marie paper:

I just do not buy it though...Most other news outlets are backpedalling now.

Reports of folk icon's death, which were picked up by some media outlets, began as a Twitter-based prank, says his long-time friend and publicist.

Bernie Fielder, Gordon Lightfoot's long-time friend, some-time publicist and road manager, said at 2:40 p.m. ET that the singer-songwriter was very much alive and in Toronto. Indeed, he claimed Lightfoot's secretary had spoken with the artist ??just a half-an-hour ago.?

Mr. Fiedler claimed in a phone conversation that the death report was ??a prank? originating as ??a Twitter coming out of Ottawa.? He indicated a media release might be issued soon putting the rumour of Mr. Lightfoot's death to rest.

Mr. Fiedler also has been Lightfoot's concert promoter and tour organizer.

One of my favourite singers of all time. Love all his music. Careless Highway and Ribbon of Darkness are my favourites. Sundown is about Cathy Smith, the woman who injected Belushi for the last time. She and Lightfoot dated for a long time.

I hope this one is a mistake. I love him and saw him perform a couple of times in the 70s. The last time I saw him on TV he looked awful and I hate to say it but like a career alcoholic. It may have been another health issue but he looked haggard and had that hollow haunted look but that beautiful voice was still there.
I also loved his work as a composer.

Yeah, lots of anger, booze and all the problems that come with them. I saw him a few years ago. He looks like a strong wind would knock him over but he's still quick and clever and has a great voice.

    THE CANADIAN PRESS@
TORONTO -- Gordon Lightfoot says he's very much alive, despite
online reports of his death that spread like wildfire Thursday
    afternoon.
"I'm fine, everything is good. I don't know where it comes from.
It seems like a bit of a hoax or something," the folk icon told
    all-news station CP24.
"I was quite surprised to hear (it) myself."
He went on to joke: "I haven't had so much airplay on my music
    now for weeks."
The Canwest news service posted a report early Thursday afternoon
saying Lightfoot had died and it was quickly picked up all over the
    Internet.
One report had singer Ronnie Hawkins confirming the death.
Hawkins says he heard the rumour via his management team in the
United States, which said they heard it by phone from someone
    claiming to be Lightfoot's grandson.
"I think they can trace that phone call, maybe, and see who did
that," Hawkins said from his home in Peterborough, Ont.
"Oh what a dirty, sick joke that is, but I'm glad it was a sick
    joke and not the truth."
A spokesman for Canwest did not immediately return calls for
    comment.
Bernie Fiedler, Lightfoot's publicist, said the singer was in a
dentist's chair in Toronto when the rumours began to spread.
"We've been besieged by phone calls, it's been a prank,
somewhere over Twitter ... as far as we can think," said Fiedler,
who was preparing a news release to counter the online chatter.
Lightfoot has had health problems in recent years. He suffered a
ruptured artery in his stomach in 2002.

I'm sure Gordon is quite relieved to find out he is not dead. Would not have been surprised if it was true . His health had been so bad he almost died a few years ago. Looks like he weighs a 100 lbs.

Oh, how sad. I've always liked Richard Dawson. Leave it to my fellow hags to be so knowledgeable. I hadn't heard or read this yet.

I really liked him on Hogan's Heroes & his wit on the game shows. RIP, Richard.

Nobody here, eh? So which website spreads these rumours... I wanna see. LOL!

    Cosby: Stop 'death hoaxes'

    Last Update: 8/02 8:57 pm

Legendary comedian Bill Cosby is urging online hoaxers to stop reporting his death. Cosby says his friends always fall for the sick rumors.

Reports surfaced online this week alleging The Cosby Show star had passed away.
Cosby's rep moved quickly to dismiss the rumors, stating: "Mr. Cosby is alive and well."
The death reports came just months after similar rumors emerged in February and Cosby, 73, is calling on the pranksters to stop the erroneous jokes for the sake of his loved ones.
In a series of posts on his Twitter.com page, he writes, "Again, I'm rebuttaling (sic) rumors about my demise.
"Emotional friends have called about this misinformation. To the people behind the foolishness, I'm not sure you see how upsetting this is."
Zach Braff, Johnny Depp and Kanye West have all been targeted in similar death claims by online jokers.

I'm really surprised that the "Paul is dead" rumors of Paul McCartney's "death" isn't on this thread. Remember there were supposed to be "hints," like playing records backwards and cryptic lyrics, the cover of the Abbey Road album, etc...

On April 5, 2002 I had a little ruptured brain aneurysm my sister was at work at the time. My family called her to tell her I was being life flighted. A co-worker who knew me from high school commented; "Those are fatal". I was rummored dead at that point and have never corrected it there are folks who still look at me like they've seen a ghost. I can only laugh.

Yeah but we could do a whole thread on the supposed clues, "I buried Paul" the fact he is the only one barefoot on the abby Road cover and on and on.

Every time a pap catches a picture of an older celeb- with a medical condition or just looking old- the tabloids seem to run a "Sad Last Days" feature.

Annette, James Garner and Dick Clark have all had their "SLD" stories recently. All have serious medical issues, but they're hanging in there.
I could see where somebody would read the headline and figure the person had already passed.

I'm glad to hear the rumors are false. I loved him during the 60's and thought he has a great talent for comedy. Yes I loved Run Buddy Run and his Dragnet appearences, and a great musician too! What's not to like?
