And that is why I call bullshit on the "she's such a horrible person" cry.

No, she's stupidly being loyal to her brother. She's not the first person who has made a huge mistake standing by family, and she won't be the last. I don't think she's an inherently racist person, and I don't think she's as awful as certain people are trying to make her out to be. And funny, Michael Vick was picked back up by the NFL, Don Imus still has a radio show, and so on and so forth. So why are people calling for Paula Deen to be burned at the stake?

My guess is because she came from nothing, and made something of herself, through a lot of hard work. There are a lot of people who can't stand that, and who live to bring down people who come up from nothing and make successes of themselves. I'd be willing to bet that there will be a new target soon.

People were also a bit upset with her I recall when it was found out she had diabetes and didn't say anything about it for a long time - since she didn't want it to effect her cooking business. I think that probaby helped her lose a bit of credbility there to help all this n-word stuff snowball.

I never heard much about Paula Deen until the great racial slur admission and follow on media mayhem. So she said a word which is offensive, but not rare, and she is now the beyond redemption. Jane Fonda, however, who pulled her stunts tells us to deal with it and we're told she has made such contributions to society, overall, so we should let those events vanish into the mists of time. I guess traction counts more than proportionality, but if the argument is that you say one racially offensive word and you wear the scarlet N, or W, etc for the rest of your life then I'm screwed.

    Well said, Bravo!

Jane Fonda supported a tyrannical regime that killed and tortured Americans (in addition to its own people), but she's a hero. Paula Deen used a rude word that blacks use all the time and used it in a private conversation, then told the truth about it and she's a pariah.

    What's wrong with this picture?

The media has made it about that word. It's about how her and her brother ran their businesses.

She had diabetes for 3 years (I think) before she said anything in public. That was my first problem with her. She's sick, and continues her show making the most unhealthy food you could throw a cooking pot at. You know, so anyone who followed her show can maybe get sick too. It's all in the sharing. Money Money Money. I think she's as full o' shit as they come and that phony no-tears crying from the interview the other day stamps it in gold for me. Wanted to add....the reason the diabetes/cooking show pisses me off so bad is that there is no way she could eat her own shit and survive. Not for long anyway.

Her health problems are her own business and people can make their own choices in eating what they want. Yeah, she's making money, good for her. As for her being full of shit, most people are.

Yeah that's why there was such an outcry when she revealed her diabetes. Somewhere in there is a responsibility to her public.

Ahhh. The medical defense. Of course nobody says or does anything because they are a dumbass. Nooooo, there is always a medical or psychological reason. Sad.

I agree that her diabetes is her business. What you eat is your business. Between the two the responsibility is all your own. Paula Deen isn't putting a gun to people's heads (uh oh!) to buy her books or watch her show. The responsibility belongs to the individuals.

    We're talking about recipes here.

Anyhow, I like watching her party show. She cracks me up with her off the wall comments. She's a dirty old lady most of the time, and I love it.

Besides that, she does have some great recipes. And she cooks for real people, with real ingredients, not all that low cal crap.
I think she's adorable too Jack's Girl!!! I met her at a casino in Indiana a few years back and she was sooooo friendly. Walked and talked with us like we were old friends.

It's not just recipes. She owns buisnesses and employs a lot of people. If the allegations of how her companies were being run are true, it's atrocious. I don't work for her, so I don't know, but the way the media has turned this into a one time situation over a word, while typical, is a joke. It's also a shame how so many people believe it.

Exactly. Her having diabetes was nobodies business but her own. Not her public or any ones! That's like saying OMG Marilyn Monroe had hemorrhoids and didn't tell people! Oh I don't like her now. She had a responsibility to her public and her fans to tell us that! Geesh!

It's a business based on recipes.

But the media storm is about her vocabulary, not about her business practices. The stuff about that comes from a vindictive and disgruntled ex-employee looking to cash in.

I know very little about how she handled her businesses. If she is indeed mistreating her employees, shame on her. I also don't know whether the Jackson woman is telling the truth. She could be, or she may be just another sour grape money monger.

As far as her health, yep, that's her business. The heart attack recipes, come on, anyone who can read a recipe can discern bad food from good food. I've never even seen one of her books, much less read one of the recipes, but I can tell from just the few minutes I've watched her preps that it will clog your arteries. And if people buy her books and/or make her recipes that's on them. I imagine books about bakery goods and buttered and porked down veggies sell better than water based fruit compotes and green beans cooked in beef broth. So what? Look at the sugary cereal on the shelves, the pastries, McDonald's, Golden Corral--all are making money hand over fist, why is it wrong for her to do the same? It isn't. You make your own choices and live with it. Or somebody else will make them for you and you'll have to live with that too. I had rather make my own decisions.

I agree that people should make their own choices, but it is fact that being overweight is a serious diabetes risk factor. She didn't say anything for several years because she KNEW what the fallout would be. And so it was.

See, I recently saw her and her family on a bunch of magazine covers touting their weight loss, and nowhere was there any mention of diabetes. It was all spun to look and sound like she just saw the light for the good of everyone, and I remember being disgusted that she was basically jumping on the bandwagon while still touting crap. This just makes that way worse IMHO.

Not that I think she bears responsibility for her audience's eating habits. My objection is to not having the character to say "I ate myself sick, now I have to fix it".

Exactly. If there is one thing I can't stand it is a hypocrite, and a lot of people who are blasting Paula are just that. They have no problem with singers, musicians, comedians, etc. using it, but oh hell now, Paula Deen better not have called someone a nigger 20+ years ago!

It's a fight she can't win. She keeps rambling on, they'll slam her for that, and add that on top of what she already said. By her just saying "Yeah, I said it" then moving on, the media and everyone else will eventually get tired of it and just move on to the next person that does something.

    Seriously...

I think the entire country is overreacting to the Paula Dean thing. Apparently, many people like fattening foods, hence the obesity problem in this country. But, blaming Paula Dean is not the answer. The "n" word is offensive, just like many other words. I find music of today very offensive, but I just don't listen to it. I'm not one to make mountains out of mole hills. What is this country becoming? A bunch of whiney, petty, lazy people.

Yes it is. Everybody is a victim looking to cash in. If the media wants to take you down, it will, I don't care who you are. She got P.O.C.'ed. Political Over Correctness. Hate never dies, it's a two edged sword.

I see Ballantine Books has canceled her upcoming book.

Yet Anne Perry, whose books are also published by Ballantine, still remains on their roster.

    Thoughts?

Murdering your mama is not bad enough to get your book contract canceled, even though it was outted by someone besides you; but don't admit to saying the n-word 20 years ago or you'll be dumped by your publisher and your tv show, etc, ya'll.

She said the N word 30 plus years ago, and she admitted it. She voted for Obama twice, and she's into history and likes civil war enactments. I admire her honesty. I never watch Food network but I don't see why they dumped her.

In all my years I've never seen liberals feast on one of their own alive like they are in paula deen.

The last time I checked we have the right of free fuking, cocksuking speech in this country. I'm going to take Kayne's, Snoop Dogg's NOTORIOUS', Tupac's albums and run them over with my car because of their use of the N word.

I've thought about this for a week or so and I have to say, I agree with many that she was honest. She was giving deposition and answered truthfully that she did use that particular word 27 years ago. Who hasn't said things that were in appropriate in their lives. And it was 27 years ago.

I don't particularly like Paula Deen. She's annoying. I'm not trying to defend her, but I think the backlash is heavy handed. She made a mistake 27 years ago and she has to pay for it now? How much good has she done in 27 years? Has she done things for charity? Has she helped others? If she has then why punish her for a mistake that was almost 3 decades ago?

The moral of the story, I guess, is to not tell the truth when giving a deposition.

The First Amendment only guarantees your right to say it, it doesn't protect you from criticism because you said it. The criticism is free speech, too. And that n word 27 years ago was just the beginning, there's more stuff that's come out about her being racist. That's still not illegal, but don't be surprised if people(decent people, anyway) want to distance themselves from you(in this case, Paula).
