I think white people can use the "N" word without prejudice. I know this as fact actually. I will say though that it is generally amongst friends. I've even know several that add the r sound amongst people of color without offending them. In jail virtually everyone says nigga. It's a cultural thing amongst people of all colors here. But again it's mostly among friends. I personally don't use this type of terminology these days but did as a youth. I find it to be foolish. I have no doubts that PD used it in a derogatory manner. But people can change over a 20 year period. She could be a racist fool or person that has changed. I really don't care that much personally. I didn't even know who she was before this thread.

& to add to my point, just because a person says "the N-word" that doesn't mean he/she is racist.

That's strange, I went to collage in Tennessee and one of my professors was a Wiggins. He was from Alabama. HA! My dad's fam came out of Texas, so I don't know about any in Mississippi.

When I first heard about this, my first thought was, "what is wrong with her" as I heard about this wedding reception with black men dressed in white tuxedos. I also read on the internet that she made white and black employees use separate bathrooms and I wonder if this was just some drama to fan the flame. I can't believe this is true and if it is, I wonder if she was ever served that chocolate pie recipe from The Help.

Anne Rice stated on Facebook the other day that she thought this was a witch hunt, Anne is from the South too, New Orleans in fact. Contrary to what many write about us down here, not all of us are racist, and in fact, in spite of my fair complexion, my Mother was Creole. I am so tired of hearing the N word by rappers and then these young white kids buy this music and then are considered racist if they use word. Really, you can't have it both ways. My husband has a number good friends that are black and it is common for them to refer to my husband affectionatlley as "My Nig___" , They know the word bothers my husband and they find great joy in aggravating him by saying it.

Paula Deen can be annoying and I stopped watching her years ago. I thought she was amusing at first but her recipes became unrealistic and that voice can be like nails on a chalk board. But I don't think she is a bad or evil person.

It reminds me of the F word, which is now acceptable by many in casual conversation. I know racism is something that is brewed by ignorant people, people don't take the time to get know each other. The bottom line is how you treat people.

I just saw an apology from her on the news. Not sure if it's the one you guys are talking about. But she looks scared out of her mind.

She isn't sorry about what she said or did, only sorry she has been exposed. The line about her being from a "different time" in the South is true, but when one knows better, one does better. As much fame and wealth Paula has accumulated one would think at some point she would have acquired some class and racial sensitivity training. The irony of the whole situation is that a Caucasian woman exposed her for who and what she truly is. Just goes to show she should have dropped the second-rate Scarlet O'Hara act a LONG time ago.

Yeah, I noticed the super pink face too. Wonder if her blood pressure was skyrocketing? Or maybe just cheap Cover Girl makeup?

This morning, I saw Paula's show was scheduled to be on Food Network. When I changed the channel (because I had to know if they were really going to play the show), sure enough, Pioneer Woman was on instead. Ironically, Paula's son Jaimie's show was on right after Pioneer Woman. Wonder if Food will totally stop showing her shows altogether?

Well said. Knowing something is wrong and trying to justify it is ridiculous. She knows what that word is and I believe she used it pejoratively. I still think people can change but it sounds as if she hasn't.

You know we people from down yonder here are sometimes judged as being backwards so I just got a chill up and down my spine when you used pejoratively. McMorbid you're my hero of the day!

I worked for Democratic politicians for many many years and you would not believe the porn that came across the computers in E mails to the men from their friends, the sexist comments treating women like second class citizens were constant, they joked about gays, and under their breath they would make their racists comments in that office. Then there was the elitism, I didn't live in the right neighborhood or graduate from the right school or have Season Tickets to the LSU games so I was certainly looked down upon. If I told you their last name you would easily recognize it and maybe be bit surprised. Did I mention that I hate politicians, both Democrats and Republicans. I could have pissed and moaned and caused a big stink and sued for discrimination had I been an opportunist that saw the almighty dollar sign. That is not me, humans are very flawed.

Paula Deen is not alone, she is only exposed.

I think the racial slur thing was so over dramatized, and the word is thrown around like confetti these days. Just make a racial slur and you will be judged worse than a someone who tortured and raped an infant. This story about Paula Deen is making more headlines than that of that missing Elena baby .

No doubt. Apparently PD is headline news while Skylar Neese isn't worth mention. Along with many other news worthy victims of crime. I think mainstream media is no longer concerned with what mainstream viewers would like to see. But we have the internet with many options. I don't watch television so I would miss all of these stories without the net. I usually just search for stuff I see on FAD.

Isn't that the truth. Seems people are more interested in reporting this and the name of Kashtrashian's baby than Baby Elena or Skylar Neese. Appalling, but true. No wonder our country is getting dumber. Thank goodness for the Internet or I doubt people would know what was happening in the real world.

    Embarassment?

I grew up during a different time in the South too; but I was never unmindful of others rights or feelings.

That whole "slave" wedding concept is just unimaginable; reminds me of Ralph Englestad; the original owner of the Imperial Palace Casinos in Vegas and Biloxi.

It is said that he would have "birthday parties" on Hitler's birthday and have the wait staff dressed as concentration camp inmates; and some attendees dressed as high ranking Nazis.
I don't know if the attire thing is 100% true; but I know that he was fined for at least one such event.

One of my favorite authors, Kurt Vonnegut; said that WWII would always be popular in movies because the Nazis had such great looking uniforms - I guess they had one possibly admirable quality - style. You don't "get" humanity; but at least you have style.

It's fine to dislike or disrespect someone; but Jeeze; they need to have given you a tangible reason; not just because they exist.

I don't know what is in Paula's heart; if she was just admitting to past ignorance that she has outgrown; then bless her; if not well; fuck her; there's still too much hatred and ignorance in this world - anywhere you go.

    It's not a Southern thing; it's not a white thing; it's a people thing.

We have the biggest brains of all of God's creatures (and opposable thumbs); and those qualities apparently were bestowed encumbered with the capacity for pride, hatred, jealousy; greed and other not so nice sensibilites that have nothing to do with finding food and procreating; which are pretty much the only two things every other creature on the planet is interested in.

We haven't learned how to deal with that yet; big brains aside.

I'm always amused by peoples' reaction when someone they like says something stupid, or maybe we find out they're racist or anti-Semitic or whatever. I've seen online comments about this Paula Deen stuff saying "First Amendment! You're infringing on her First Amendment rights!". I like to remind people the First Amendment only guarantees your right to say stupid sh*t. It doesn't protect you from negative reaction from the stupid sh*t. It also protects my right to make fun of you for saying it.

Thank you! I was so disappointed to find out about Mel Gibson. It totally ruined him for me. Oddly, the only movie of his I can still watch is Signs. Michael Richards sort of flies below my radar. Paula Deen was never on my radar. So annoying - - can't even stand to hear her talk.

I don't care about Michael Richards either, but his tirade was still pretty shocking. I'm one of the five people on the planet who hated the Seinfeld show. I really don't give a crap about Paula either or any other of the cooks or domestic divas like Rachael Ray or Martha Stewart. I did like Mel Gibson until his true colors came out and I feel the same about Tom Cruise and Charlie Sheen before they went batshit crazy. I can't stand any of them now.

Should Paula Deen have lied about using the word nigger? Would that have been better?

Everyone on this thread has used that word in a pejorative way, and, by the way, it is a word.

We had someone post the picture of a black guy as a donkey on another thread, is that racist?

She likely would have been screwed either way, damned if she did and damned if she didn't. Calling someone a jackass for acting like a jackass isn't racist. Nobody would have given that picture a second thought if it was pasty white George Bush because God knows he can be a jackass, too.

I didn't find the picture to be racist at all. I didn't see anything to imply that it was meant to be. I have to disagree with your second statement. I don't believe everyone has used the term pejoratively.

You guys are giving more power to the word than it deserves.

Also, Deen said it in describing a black guy who put a gun to her head in a robbery. What's worse, the word or the deed?

Smithfield fired her, per FaceBook. I clicked over to their website and you cannot leave a comment or send them a message. I managed to click LIKE on one somebody slid in before they deleted the social links.

I also read on their website where somebody accused them of selling out to China. With China's track record? Aha!

Whoever it was that made the statement, "So everyone here has used the N word". No sorry, I have not. I was brought up not to use that word and never have. Not once.

I was told it's original meaning has nothing to do with race (this is easily looked up as well). And that using it to describe anyone is demeaning at best.

When people decide to use it to describe themselves, they can do that if they want to. It's a free country and all that. Some do it socially, etc. Doesn't bother me. Because it's their choice to say that about themselves.

I feel Paula Deen has no concept of the word's original meaning after seeing all her nonsense and the arguments about it. And that is why she ignorantly used it in the first place.

So damn tired of hearing "the n word". Not the word, that term, and how high and mighty and preachy people get when talking about it.

I wonder if the guy who put the gun to her head has a concept of the word's original meaning?

This hale storm of protest over Paula Deen is a kind of witch burning hysteria. Nigger is just a word, a rude word to be sure, but the pants-peeing reaction to it is evidence of some deep-seated fears among a segment of the population that can't seem to think for themselves.

Words have meaning and effect. They always have and they always will. Why? Because of wastes of time and energy like this whole shit show, which as far as I'm concerned is a mockery to civil rights work.

Would the guy who held a gun to Paula Deen's head be a civil right's hero?

She used the word in the privacy of her own home in talking to her husband.

I'm also fascist, sexist, intellectually snobbish, and bitchy, depending on who I've pissed off in any given conversation on any given day.

I don't use the word. I never have, and it isn't because of any guilt. It's because it demeans and says a lot more about the user than the person it's directed at.
