I think all that "Ya'll" shit is an act. What do "Ya'll" think? [/quote]
Me thinks ya'll is right!
I used to enjoy her early shows but she's really gotten to be a bit too corny.
Make that 4! While her voice and accent get on my nerves from time to time, I do love her and her cooking. I read her autobiography and I howled with laughter the whole time. Yes, she does have a potty mouth but so do I!
I have lived in the deep south my whole life and there are heavy, thick accents like hers everywhere (ev-ry way-uh). But like I said, her voice gets on my last nerve sometimes. She might lay the good ole girl thang on quite thick at times, especially if she's dealing with a day-um yank-eh
Paula reminds me a lot of the old timey southern ladies I've known in Florida and Georgia - and still know now. What you see is what you get, and if you don't like it, that's okay.
Yes, the y'all's do get a bit tedious, but she sounds like most of the people I run into at the grocery store around here.
Has Paula Dean ever been on the Martha Stewart show?
The Y'all is definitely an act
Drives me nuts
All of my family is from the south, and none of us say Y'all like that
But I do enjoy her recipes
She sort of annoys me, so I take her in very small doses. lol If I watch her show, I can't watch again for about a month. She's had some good looking recipes, mainly for desserts. She made a blueberry lime tiramisu once that looked pretty good!
I'm with you. I want Miss Paula to adopt me as a niece or something. Seriously. She's worked hard to get to where she is, she didn't have it handed to her on a silver platter.
And I love that she's a dirty old lady! I know she has a potty mouth, I've read her book, and I love her even more....
Damn it I want to find the recipe to that fried macaroni and cheese bacon bites! We know how to deep fry anything, apparently! Of course I say that after just trying, of all things, a deep friend Milky Way candy bar *giggles*
Ooh, I just found it--can;t wait to try that one for my honey. Unhealthy, yes..but he is Southern and pretty much prefers everything deep fried when possible.
LMAO! Guys I LOVE Paula Dean! She's adorable!
And the fact that her husband's name is bubba...classic.
but her recipies kick butt.
When I first saw her I thought she was kind of cute, but it seems every time I see her she uses more "Y'alls".
I've known people from OK, TX, NC, SC, GA, LA, and MS, and I've never heard anyone who speaks the way she does except maybe Reba McIntyre and I think she's as fake and phony as Paula Dean, y'all.
She was on the cover of some magazine, more like a health food magazine even, and inside were her recipes for a scrumptious Christmas Eve dinner. I don't usually do this without testing recipes first, but she was being hyped on TV so much (this was several years ago when she first came out) and I made the entire thing. Red snapper, shrimp, artichokes, oh! the ingredients I spent money on! And it came out like crap. I am a good cook and followed the recipes and we were all laughing about it, after. Everyone mentions, "Remember the Christmas Paula Dean dinner?" Just like when Martha first came out - her recipes sucked. At least the ones I tried.
Paula Dean needs to get naked and roll herself in butter, sugar and flour, then do a high dive into a deep fryer and serve herself with sour cream.
My mom and Dad go to her Uncle Bubba's place in Savannah every year (We are from PA), they love it!
I love her!! I love her bawdy mouth and I wouldn't care if she skipped the cooking altogether and we just ate sticks of butter (i love butter by the way)! My dream is to live next door and for her to be constantly yelling over the fence..."come on over and have dinner, lunch, breakfast...etc"! My daughter feels the same way! As for the y'all....If that was part of the "persona" she put together to start her business and raise her son's by herself...god bless her y'all! You do what you have to do in life and I think she is great!
I agree. Anyone that can poke fun and laugh at themselves is okay in my book.
Long Gone Day, your story was funny! Know who has recipes that are almost always great? Alton Brown. His are incredible. I found only one that I had to tweak for us, but on a whole, I have several of his recipes in my cook book that get regular rotation. The guy is amazing.
Paula's potty mouth doesn't faze me, I have one myself.
Did you see the one where she went to a party and stuck her tongue into the chocolate fondue fountain? Egads!!
Every once in a while I like to watch her for the train wreck fascination appeal, if y'all know what I mean! I think she'd be a hoot to hang out with, I just don't think I want her cooking for me. I tried to make a few of her recipes and they turned out like crap for me, too, Lone Gone Day! I'm a culinary student, too. I can see in hindsight (now that I've taken my many baking labs with 20-plus hours of lab reports and home work per week) that something was seriously off with the formulas. Either she makes it all up on the spot or whoever transribes her recipes for the Food Network is seriously effed up.
I can see her director really telling her to lay on the accent and "y'all"s for the camera, though. And I bet they give her a bunch of Texas State Fair recipes and tell her to add another pound of butter and deep fry it twice! All for the audience.
I'd still rather watch her than Racheal Ray, who might as well have a caption flashing at the bottom of the screen whenever shes on: "I'm cute! I'm so cuuuuute! You adore me, don't you?" *shudder*
I also loathe how she doesn't remove all her rings when she makes meatloaf and stuff, and gets all the meat in her rings. BLECH!
My main problem with her(and the only problem) is repeating 'Y'all' over and over.
I won't even let Hubs eat chips out of the bag. You are supposed to pour some into a bowl or onto a napkin or paper plate. NOT lick your fingers and put them back into the bag over and over. That is disgusting.
I haven't ever watched her too much so I haven't noticed the cleanliness issues but that is truly disgusting when people's saliva ends up in the food they're making or all over the place in general.
It even bugs me on "Will & Grace" when Will tastes whatever it is he's cooking and sticks the spoon back in the pot, and he's CUTE!
