I believe the second of the photos above was shown on a CBS 48 Hours episode called Death of a Princess as well as a second additional b/w image which was genuine-I'd have to find it and watch it again to be sure. Three genuine photos were published (including the second one above) in the Italian press. I've seen these four and all are consistent in her appearance (i.e., no damage to her face).

This photo is fake. The others pictures showing her in profile and being attended to at the scene by a French doctor are the genuine ones. Her face was pretty much unmarked and, yes, apparently she was conscious briefly and was heard to say: "I'm hurt very badly," and "my God."
I remember that evening/night. I was flipping through the channels trying to find something to watch. Channel 3 didn't come in very good but it was a FOX station, I don't think it was Fox News. Anyway, they announced that Princess Diana had died. I freaked out and told my mom and dad. They were like "No way." So we turned on CNN. At that point, CNN was just reporting that Dodi and the driver had died, not Di. My parents suggested that I'd heard that Dodi and Diana had been in a car accident and that Dodi had died. I agreed but deep down I knew what I heard. We watched and waited for 3 hours until CNN announced that Princess Di had passed. I remember he said exactly "succumbed to her injuries." But I don't remember what he said before that. I read the book by Trever Rees-Jones, the only survivor. Interesting book. He says that he doesn't believe the driver was drunk because he wasn't stumbling around or anything before they left the hotel that night and there was some issue with the blood tests. I don't remember exactly what it said now but I just wanted to pat his hand and say "You probably don't remember much of that night." It's very easy to see how he could be thinking of another time the driver was with them. But an interesting fact about the crash was that the gear shift was found in the "R" slot for reverse. I think it was the cops that came up with the theory that because the driver was so used to driving manual cars that he'd accidentally tried shifting and put the car in reverse. At that high of a speed it would send the engine into the driver and passenger compartment and cause the car to crash. I think they said he may have tried shifting when he clipped the car in the tunnel. I have my own theory though. I think when the car hit the pillar that the force of the engine and pillar colliding forced the gear shift into "R" or the jolt from the car coming to rest so suddenly forced the gear shift into "R". The sad thing is that the book states that even if this accident had happened outside of a hospital, Di would have died. There was nothing they could do for her. Sad times.

I cried when Diana died. I do remember waking up the morning the news broke to find a note my Brother had left us - It read:
Diana and boyfriend in car crash, he's dead but I think she will be ok
How wrong was my brother! I turned on the radio and heard them talk about how nice she was, how caring she was and what a wonderful woman Diana was, I knew she had died! I ran into my parents room and told them the news, we were all shocked and upset. I do also remember how summer then was so hot but suddenly it went black and we had a huge storm, I told my Mum that God was mad she died! Silly I know!
I rememeber watching the news non stop, crying over her boys never seeing their Mother again and her funeral, god it was heartbreaking. Seeing her boys walking behind her coffin, looking so small and upset...I just wanted to hug them!
I dont think she was killed. It was an car crash, not murder. I also dont believe her driver was drunk, I dont think she would have been so stupid to get into a car with a drunk driver!

I don't remember that, spooky but I remember (who doesn't) Elton John playing Candle in the Wind 97 at her funeral. I think he played it at concerts for her for the rest of the year and then said he wasn't going to play it anymore. I don't know if he played it last year at the 10 year memorial they had. I think everybody expected him to but I don't think he did.

In Dodi's defense, I have heard he was a very sweet person and a standup guy in his way. Agree he was not a wise choice for Di. He was a rich kid, undoubtedly quite spoiled.

Diana wasn't with Dodi in the sense that people assume. She was only with him because A) His father had enough money, a yacht, and private protection service to offer her a few cushy holidays that summer; B) More important, to make Hasnat Khan, whom she adored, jealous. After the fact, Mohammed Al-Fayed claimed that the relationship between Diana and Dodi had been leading to marriage-well, maybe it had been in Dodi's mind but not in Diana's. At the time, I was in the midst of work on my biography of the Duchess of Windsor and was actually back east in NYC for the auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's belongings belong sold by Dodi's father (which was postponed when they died) and was therefore in touch with a lot of "insiders" (members of the Royal Family, courtiers, even a member of Diana's family and some of her friends) who I had interviewed for the book. Afterward, everyone I talked to was quite clear about knowing Diana wasn't interested in Dodi.
I was absolutely devastated by her death-literally-someone told me on phone early that morning and I had my back to the wall and slid to the floor-not only because she'd been a sort of presence in my life since 1981 owing to my writing about royals but because I actually got to meet her twice in private social circumstances and she was, despite the fact that I know she had no idea what I was writing about, nice enough to ask questions and speak to me, who truly felt like a fish out of water in a roomful of aristocrats and royals. I'll never forget that she went out of her way to do that.

One of the bodyguards protecting Princess Diana and Dodi al-Fayed said a lack of manpower and trust hamstrung the security team in the days preceding the fatal crash. Kieran Wingfield testified at the Diana inquest that Dodi’s father repeatedly rejected his requests for more guards and that Dodi himself refused to divulge details of the couple's plans.
Princess Diana was stripped of her HRH title after the divorce and this also meant that she lost the security of having a police escort whenever she moved about. The security people that were with her and Dodi that last evening didn't have the proper skills to take on a job of this magnitude. They tried to sneak Diana and Dodi out the back door, thereby creating a media circus wich again lead to them being followed by the paps. Had they taken Diana out the front door, and let the paps have their photo's then perhaps they would have been content. A lot of things went wrong that night and the world lost someone very special because of it.
I find it intriguing how Al-Fayed has created this shrine of Diana and Dodi at Harrods department store in London. Diana had no intention of taking her relationship with Dodi anywhere if one is to believe the people closest to her. It feels like Al-Fayed is milking this tragedy for PR and trying to create this Romeo and Juliet story that just wasn't there.

I like Diana because she was so down to earth, she loved her kids and not because they were royalty, she truly was the People's Princess.
Diana's death was the first time I relied primarily on my computer for information on a major news story. I first saw a headline that Diana had been injured in a car accident and was in "intensive care in a Paris hospital." I then went on to do something else, and was about to log off for the night when I saw the headline had changed to she had died.
I ended up buying my first Pentium computer because my high-end 486 just couldn't keep up.
Thought I would just bump the thread up as we are nearly at the 12 year anniversary. The Sunday that she died was very strange and quiet and seems like it only happened a few days ago.

I was home watching TV with my parents... For some reason I want to say "Early Edition". I was glued to the TV the entire week. I still have an entire tote of newspapers and magazines from that time.
As far as Elton's song, I believe he only sang it twice. At the funeral and then he went straight from the service to the studio, recorded it in one shot for the single and that was it.

I'll never forget it because she died on my birthday and also I was born at 12:30 am and thats when she crashed. I remember exactly where I was when I saw the news. Shocking.
I've seen the exhibit at Harrods. They have the 'engagement ring' in the middle and the wine glass Diana supposedly drank from that last night, complete with lip smears. I don't buy this; why would you save a wine glass someone drank from at a high end establishment where they get celebrities every week? It's obviously been fabricated for this revolting gilded monstrosity he has there. The man ought to be ashamed for his lack of taste.

I thought she was interesting looking rather than beautiful. The best grooming money could buy. I read that she said, "I'd rather be captured by terrorists than go out without mascara," which I thought was rather empty headed, given her global status. Huge nose, but I like my huge nosed dyed blondes (Carolyn Besette Kennedy). I do wish she had a stylist more in line with the Mario Testino shoot in that last picture; she finally looked like a modern chic woman. All those fussy skirt suits did nothing for her. Whoever dressed her put her things that aged her a lot of the time.

When the car took off, it actually took off without Trever and he had to jump in at the last minute. I just got done reading "After Diana -- William, Harry, Charles, and the Royal House of Windsor". Great read! It was originally $25.95 and I got it for $5.95 at B&N. It has pics of Camilla wearing "Diana's" favorite pieces of jewlery. There are a lot of crown jewels... the fact that she wears obvious favorites (ie, highly recognizable pieces) is tacky imo. I sure as hell wouldn't want to wear my husband's dead ex wife's things... idc if it technically belongs to his mommy or not.

I remember I was in Dallas, Texas - I was a bridesmaid in my friends wedding and we had just gotten back to our hotel room. I came in and went straight to the shower to get the wedding goo off and when I plopped down on the bed, it was all over the news. It was late and when I started watching she had not yet been declared dead. I remember thinking, "Please God let her make it through, her poor little boys need her". When they finally announced that she was gone I just sat in the hotel room bawling like she was a long lost friend. I think I felt for her boys. Losing a parent at a young age is very difficult to grow up with, especially with their little lives being in the spotlight.

There was actually stated protocols, that I believe that have been changed, about whether or not to wear a seatbelt because it all hinged on the fact on how fast the security could get them out of the car faced with a situation
I remember My husband and I had stopped over to some friends and it was on tv when we got there..we were all shocked but the news that she'd died hadn't come out yet so we thought she was injured with some broken bones..I woke up the next day and heard it on tv that she was gone..My first thought was for her boys..she adored them and for them to grow up with out her just so sad. she had many troubles but I think she was as beautiful inside as she was outside.
My "where were you" story is kinda awful. I was in my senior year of hs and driving my (older and very drunk) boyfriend home. Something came on the radio about Diana and his exact words were "yeah, that bitch died!" We broke up soon thereafter -- not solely because of that but it's really sad that that's how I found out!

As a bridemaid you pretty much have to dress the way the bride wants you to. My Bride required these outrageous hair up-do's that called for about 5 pounds of gel and 20 cans of hairsrpay.... Not to mention the body glitter and these long, layered and heavy forest green dress in August in Texas.... Not comfy at at all.
I try to stay as au naturale as possibile - a little spray here and maybe some lipstick and mascara. All the other stuff combined with sweat just made me feel, "gooey"!

I had just finished uni when this happened. Was reasonably early out of bed (for me!)that day, trudged down the stairs, picked up the newspaper off the door mat, trudged into the front room and popped the tele on, then started to read the paper from the back - sport first (which is something I NEVER do!) Switched the tele on, and they were going on about something about Princess Di, and I turned over the paper, to see the headline that Dodi was dead and Diana badly injured, and thought it was just about that (she hadn't been announced dead when the papers in the UK went to press).
Although she had been dead for a number of hours, it wasn't till about 10 minutes later that they actually said she was dead! I was like, WTF?!?!?
I don't believe for a second she was murdered. The Royals might not have liked her all that much, but I don't believe for a secondly they would knowingly cause their sons / grandsons that much pain. Whatever you think of them, they love those boys.
I was in a beer tent at German beer fest when my friend joined us and told me about the accident. I just couldn't believe it. I remember watching her wedding on TV.

It is correct that had she worn a seatbelt she would not have died. So that was a very stupid thing to do/not do. I heard somewhere they have a rule whereby the royals don't wear seatbelts in case they have to be whisked out of a burning vehicle so it's easier. I just think it was a very basic thing not to have done. Clunk click, every trip. To be honest, I really can't imagine her getting old. The general public here had started to see her as a bit frivolous and she had planned to abandon a lot of her charities. I was shocked at the general public getting upset to the extent they did. Later, it was suggested that people were crying because they hadn't had a chance to cry about stuff in their own life and it changed the public face of grief in the UK for ever. That's certainly true. The only other time I've seen this was 9/11, which I can understand more. But this was one person who none of the mourners knew, or could relate to, to the extent that they were calling in sick at work and workers in Iceland, a local frozen food shop, were wearing black armbands on the day of the funeral. The TV was dominated with programmes about her, and the radio played songs relating to her again and again. There was a woman interviewed on the news, who had been in chuch and she said she had been pushed to the ground by the Holy Spirit and been unable to get up; she claimed God told her she was experiencing the 'pressure' Diana had felt in her life. That really frightened me. Everybody talked about it and there was this awful atmosphere of cloying grief in the air. It affected me emotionally in a very bad way because you could not get away from it. It started getting into my dreams. The media, Joe Shmoe in the pub, everyone seemed to have lost their marbles. I was only sixteen and I was genuinely afraid that the whole fabric of my society had changed in some irreversible way. This weird, gaudy grief showed no sign of letting up. I would say this went on for a good six months before things started to settle down.
I coped with it by treating it as a complete deathhag would. I wanted to know about the funeral, about the details of the crash, what state she was in when they found her and what she would be buried in. I now know that (allegedly) she is not even on that island.
