I read 2 different books on this true crime, and watched a few TV specials on it. It is definately, among the hundreds I've read, one of the WORST cases. It just boggles your mind. Karla was bad enough, but her husband was just PURE EVIL. She lucked out in getting the deal she got. IMO, she should be in prison forever, just like her sick F**k husband. I think that's the thing that many people can't understand. This "beautiful" couple were SICK, SICK. And I've seen MANY pictures of Karla, and in EVERY ONE of them... look at her eyes..... they are TOTALLY EMPTY. No feeling, no remorse, no NOTHING. Just pure evil.
I definitely think her looks played a role in it, but I also admit that she and Bernardo were smart... the tapes were hidden well and it was not until the day she was sentenced that his legal team watched the tapes (he gave them permission to enter the house, a week or so after the police's search warrant ran out, and told them not to watch the tapes). Had the cops been able to find them she'd been sitting in prison as we speak!

This probabky won'tgo over well but I think she was misjudged in this respect = when those famous photos were taken of her in court (or just out of it) that showed an empty loook in her eyes, it w.as because she was heavily medicated. She's evil, sure. But not because of those shots. let's be fair at least.
She looks pretty empty and dead inside even in the candid snapshots used in the books. Those pictures were taken before the trial.
She still gives me the heaves and the thought of her procreating is beyond frightening.
If anyone else recalls from the books, at one point she wanted to get pregnant so Paul could have his own little sex slave.

I can handle watching just about anything, but after seeing this story first air, I just cannot bring myself to watch anything more about the Bernardo case. It really is one of the most eerie things I have ever seen. They look like your average married couple, very much in love, but the horror going on behind the scenes was incredulous, especially the fact they were so young and the "Ken and Barbie" image they projected. It totally revolts me!
Karla should be behind bars forever. She was just as guilty as her sick and twisted husband. Another case of missed justice!

Another case of youth being confused with beauty. Has anyone read the book with the actual transcrips of the videos?? I remember the globe had all the transcripts of the trial as it ran, and I read every word. They still haunt me now. A friend of mine also lent me a true crime novel (no idea which one), that went into huge detail. It was pretty traumatizing to read.
Lastly, several years after the case, I met some police officers who had worked on the case, and they were very vague, but alluded to the fact that there was a lot more messed up stuff going on with Paul and Karla than just(!) the murder of these girls.
The whole thing is so bloody sickening. I would have thought that her plea agreement would have been null after they found the tapes of her as a willing participant.

I read the transcript at that time too and it's just completely unbelievable. WTF was she thinking? I don't care what her husband supposedly threatened her with (which I don't believe anyway) I would rather be killed than have to participate in something like that. I'd rather go out as a hero for trying to save one of those girls than a monster who helped out.

That would not surprise me in the least - definitely think there is much more to the case that we don't know because it never made it to the courtroom.
I don't believe it was her looks. The cops and/or prosecutors were not very through here.
She was given such a small sentence because the videotapes showing her involvement were not found until after her deal was struck.

The three books about the crime are horrifying. One, I had to put down several times and go read David Sedaris or Laurie Nataro satire because it sickened me so much.
Stephen Williams also wrote the fourth book about the case called Karla: Pact with the Devil. It concerns correspondence he had with her while she was in prision. It's chilling, it gives a lot of insight to her thought process and her true self. She is one sick woman.

Trivia: When Karla was in prison, her lesbian lover, Lynda, pictured above, who is from one of the founding families of Canada, bought Karla thousands of dollars in Victorias Secret lingere, a computer system, various other gifts.

Karla had fun in prision. Wrote to some friends that it was like living in a college dorm and she regretted marrying Paul so young and not getting that chance.
She hooked up with a girl named Cheri or Sherry?? who was also in the clink for helping her boyfriend rape young girls.

Since they were able to link Bernardo the murders due to FINALLY testing the DNA from the other rapes (had they tested it beforehand, those girls might still be allive) if there were any other "unsolved" murders in the area, the DNA should tie him to those as well.

I lived in Scarborough during Paul's "reign" as the Scarborough rapist.All my friend's were concerned, and it was noted that the rapist looked so normal and was actually "good looking" enough to inspire trust in his victims.We all were on edge.
The general public were warned by the police that he was escalating in his behaviour, and that he *would* kill. I talked to a psychologist friend of mine, who said Bernardo couldn't have been the rapist, because of the escalation factor, etc. Well- then he was atypical.
He started out as a peeping tom. One night we had a peeping tom on our property. Since we lived so close to where he lived, subsequently I've always wondered if it was Bernardo, just starting out...the time factor was right.
Apparently his "Scarborough Rapist" MO was to ask "Who's the King" as he anally raped his victims.
His father was also a convicted sex offender.
My friends went to U of T Scarborough campus with Elizabeth Bain. She disappeared, and her boyfriend was charged with her murder. There is some evidence she had met Bernardo, and cigarettes matching the kind he smoked were found in her car's ashtray. That's one reason they are trying to match Bernardo with Bain's disappearance. Karla said that Paul had brought home another victim, in additon to "Jane Doe" who was drugged and raped. She never knew who. In southern Ontario at the time Bernardo was active, there were a couple of high profile disappearances. One of them happened on a long weekend. IIRC her name was Linda Shaw, and she was trying to get home from college.
She was driving a small car, dressed in her college jacket. She stopped for fast food, somebody cut her car tire in the parking lot, and she had to pull over on the side of a major highway (401). Witnesses said they caught a glimpse of her on the side of the road with a vehicle parked behind her car and a couple of people next to her car. They found her car the next day- flat tire, with the back window kicked in, where they had gotten into the car to get her.
I remember it so vividly, because I too was driving home from college that night, wearing my college jacket, in my small car, at around the same time.
Only difference was I got off the highway just this side of the fast food/gas complex.
It's been speculated that Bernardo was possibly involved in her disappearance. Now, I've been on the west coast for a while, but I don't believe that anyone was ever charged with her murder.
Homolka was piece o' work. She worked in a vet's office, and thought it was funny to take the "docked" tails and ears of puppies...slip 'em in an envelope and post them off to her friends. This is where she got the tranquilizer that ultimately killed her sister.
There will be no photo's or videos either. The Mahaffy and French families successfully sued to have all copies of the evidence and videos destroyed.
There was insane security surrounding the evidence.
During the trial, there were long lineups of spectators to get into the venue to hear the evidence. Upon exiting they were sickened. I bet that the frequency of people's sex lives decreased during the trial because the stuff that came out was so disturbing nobody wanted to have sex, it was like it tainted everybody's lives.It was like life was so innocent then...
The author, Steven Williams I believe, who described the videos in his book, was arrested and charged over the fact that he had access to the videos. My brother was a friend of Bernardo's lawyer, who incidently found the incriminating video in a light fixture in Bernardo's house. When he dropped out of the case, my brother was convinced there was some really major issue. Sure enough...he and his legal secretary had watched the video.
Because of the ages of the victims, anybody seeing that video was charged or harassed with having access to child pornography. I think, rightly or wrongly, that the authorities so wanted to make sure justice was served they did harass people like the book's author, to make sure the evidence wasn't given out too freely.
If you didn't live in Southern Ontario at the time, it is unlikely you would understand the fear and the unease that this caused. There was a reason that the movie was never shown in Ontario. It was too close, it was too fresh, it was too raw. It impacted a huge area, from St. Catherines/Niagara Falls, right to Toronto.I lived in Kitchener at the time, and the police were chasing cars with a specific license plate, sighted in town, thinking it was used in the Mahaffy murder. People I know, called by police and told their purse or wallet was found in Bernardo's possession, and video of them in his video camera. He had been stalking them. That was what he did...went out with his video camera and taped potential victims.
Mahaffy's Mom had locked her daughter out of the house the night she disappeared, because she was trying to teach her a lesson about coming home late. Think of her nightmare, knowing her daughter would have been safe if she hadn't locked the door.

Karla apparently had false labor in the latter stages of her pregnancy. Several nurses at the hospital refused to assist her when they figured out who she was. They were reprimanded for it, but really, can you imagine touching her? Just touching her?

You made your point just fine. She isn't a person you'd feel compelled to comfort. And, there is something about making eye contact with evil that just can't be good. That makes a lot of sense. I might hand her a kleenex or a towel... then leave the room quickly.

I read some missing persons sites and every time I see a girl in the right age range from that general area in Canada, I think about Paul Bernardo and wonder.
I think he did Elizabeth Bain and he and Karla celebrated their honeymoon in Hawaii with the victim they had newspaper clippings about. They hooked up with a prostitute in Atlantic City one time. I wonder if some of the missing women who were living a high risk lifestyle could also have been victims of them.

The deal had been made. And it was some time after that the tapes were discovered.
I guess, even though the participants in such a deal are for the most part low lifes, you simply cannot reneg on th deal...then- why would ANYONE cooperate with the police, if they figured they would give info on condition, and then those conditions could be overturned, and they'd be on the hook for the crime.
I mean- who wants to do a deal with a child killer- but- if they lead the authorities to the kids' bodies so the parents get closure and the killer gets life instead of the death penalty- well...
there are those that would say it's a good deal.
We can only hope she's implicated in another one of Bernardo's crimes. Then she ain't gettin' out. Evah!

They were seen in the same places, his brand of cigarettes were in her car, the radio was tuned to his favourite station, they is speculation they actually met, and she was seen with someone matching his description the day she disappeared.

If Paul admits anything at this point, he's going to lose that tiny bit of public interest he still arouses. It's not like his sentence will be shortened. This way, he's still in the public eye, no matter how peripherally it is.
Karla has been quoted as saying she still loved Paul in some ways, she'll always love him, blah blah blah. I don't think she's ever going to offer anything else up, she still has some misguided sense of loyalty and she's free now.

I totally agree with you. If that is the worst this bitch suffers, then she hasn't suffered at all. I'm sick of hearing about how she was abused. She is an adult and even abused adults make choices and have to be held accountable.
