I, too, have been a fan since I was 13 (I am 30 now) and just wanted to learn everything I could about him! Yes, true, he was a looker and that was part of what drew me to him, but his sexuality never really was something I bothered to think about .. I have read everything about him, he was bi, he was straight, who cares?! I don't argue a point I can't prove so I don't address that .. I am still a huge fan of his movies and his short life and nothing is going to change that for me!!

I always thought he was bi, I thought he was young, curious and very about living in the moment!
His sexuality never bothered me either way cus he was so incredibly attractive so to be attractive to both sexes is part of his overall appeal! It was never important to me as an admirer of James Dean what his sexuality was!
I think we feel his sexuality on the screen and interpret it in what ever way we want! Isnt that an amazing actors feat. Isnt that a part of his amazing appeal and connection with film and the audience!

There are plenty of books and references to his homosexuality and bi sexuality Opeth32!

I know the books I have them on my book shelf and one by Morrissey of the Smiths is a collectors item but if you like I can go and list them for you! There are others that say James Dean had homosexual relations with them but also there are many women who say they had relationships with him also!
As a fan and well read on Dean I don't know for sure he was gay! He seemed to love women Pier Angeli and Ursula Andress and others as well and men, He was 24 and lovely and I think he had choices only few of us could imagine!

Its not a problem for women in general as first and foremost in film he played a very hetro male (with issues?) I think women respond to him for his emotional depth in film and his beauty!

There are heaps of sites one in particular Ive forgotten where one guy talks of his affair with james dean!
Its not a new topic! Do you want us to get the sites for you ?

That would be great if you could post the links to those sites! Also what are the names to the books you have?

Sorry about some of the errors in my 1st post I just noticed it my thoughts were flying faster than my fingers and forgot to proof read

Dont worry about past links or ebullent responses, we all do that! We are here to inform each other as we go and have fun doing so!

The Mutent King by David Dalton I think is a great read!
    James Dean by John Howlett
The book by Morrissey of the Smiths was early 90's and is great and he went there!
I am actually drawing on works I was looking at 10/20 yrs ago! Considering his death they are quite contemporairy!Im quiet abashed in saying I have been into Dean since I was 13 and and need a bit more time to go to my books to see what else Ive managed to keep! Im no expert just a heartfelt fan of his charisma and work!

Interesting read Cindy but I have to say, there was an extensive investigation into the crash just a few years ago and they used all sorts of scientific data analysis in regards to Dean's speed and Turnupseed's speed and turn ratio etc. and they came to a clear conclusion that at the time of the crash, James Dean was not speeding.

The way the wreck went, the direction and angle and ultimate final position of Dean's car dictated that he wasn't driving over the speed limit.

That whole story (albeit very interesting is predicated on Dean not being able to control himself and speed for the whole duration of his ride (which by the way he often Did speed). He was actually driving legally at the time Turnupseed hit him.

The more likely reason for the crash was that the low profile of James Dean's car did not enable Turupseed to see him until it was too late (throw in the heat blur coming off the road at that time of day, as well).

Bottom line is, a good guy was killed, and since, we all have been denied a wonderful actor and personality....forever.

    Anyway thats all.
I heard he was bi, but if he were here and would have anything to do with me I can say I would not care one bit, I would be all over him. I am not gay but I can find a woman to be beautifull if I think she is. I have a myspace page for Sharon Tate cus I think she was one of the most lovely women who ever lived. Beauty is beauty weather a person is gay or not.

I also have been a fan of his since I was a young woman
    I'm now in my 40s..
I am also straight , truthfully it has never bothered me that he might be bi, gay Im not sure if he was, but I think he used being Bi to forward his career along, I dont't think less of him for doing that either

Some women do get very annoyed at anyone suggesting that he was anything other than 100% straight...
its most likely because it detroys the myth they have built up around him..
to be this strong, romantic, character..

Thank you Cherry for the info I will look into those books. And to the others who have responded to my question ive just noticed that if the word Gay and James Dean are put in the same category with some groups of fans they get down right hostile about it. LOL thats all I can do is laugh how does anyone know one way or another the poor man never lived long enough to tell us his story. I wish the dead could or would talk to us and give us a truthful account of there lives. Ive always wondered what he would have looked like as an old man. The 1st thing that comes to mind is and im sorry if this is blasphemous to some he he but does anyone remember Marlon Brando in his youth (yum yum) and Marlon Brando from The Island of Dr. Moroe remake (vomits in mouth ever so slightly) God what if that had happend to James Dean good lord

Yes it is too bad we have to feel this way. But when a seller does not give you a reply that is a good indacation they are not on the up and up. At least when I contacted a seller about a ring that I think did belong to Sharon Tates, they wrote me back. I prob would have got it too but did not have the money.

OK I started reading this thead today, and just rented Rebel without a Cause on the strength of it. Am watching it now! (I'm a multi tasker). Always heard the legends about James Dean and can't believe I left it till I was 27 to watch one of his films. I can see what people mean about him having something completely unique. wow! Definitely not over rated at all, in reply to some people who have posted-and I'm not one to jump on bandwagons

    Hello..... !!!

I was wondering if you guys ever have dreams with Jimmy? Jimmy pops in my dreams a lot. Actually, my facination and obsession with him started when I was a kid because he would appear in my dreams a lot. This was way before I got into him or even watched any of his movies.

It's weird but he comes in my dreams when I'm in conflict or in doubt. The best dream I've ever had with him was a few years back when everything in my life was a a complete and utter mess. We were somewhere in this beautiful green field. I mean it was gorgeous. Jimmy was there with his "little bastard" parked infront of this small beautiful pond. I was sitting on top of these wires things (weird) and he comes up to me and sits next to me. He told me to look at the horizon, so I did. It was gorgeous. Then he looked at me and smiled and said "life is is too precious to spend half of your life worrying." I remember I looked at him for a while. He then got into his car and waved at me. I remember I asked him how he was and he said something like.."everything over here is great. Nothing but peace." Then he drove off and I woke up. I was so memorized by this dream that I picked up a pen and paper and wrote it down so I wouldn't forget it.

Lastnight, I was talking to a friend about all the changes at work and worrying that I wouldn't be able to do everything that is expected of me. I went to sleep with this feeling of unsureness and uneasy. So today in the morning who pops into my dreams? Jimmy! It was a brief dream and we were walking on this road and he's like "You worry too much! STOP!" lol then I woke up. Awwwwww.

Anyone else care to share their Jimmy dreams??

I held on to these news clippings from the early '90s and thought that the body on the ground was Dean's. The bigger scans may fuel the debate. But if that is indeed JD on the gurney, then I believe it is JD on the ground just before they loaded him on the gurney. I'm no expert though.

There's no way that figure is Jimmy. Look at the figure, its head is up and it appears to have their eyes open. Jimmy was trapped in his car. He broke his neck --- how could that figure be him looking up?

That does look like blood. I hate looking at pics of the car wreck. Every time, I read a book on him or see a documentary where they get to that fateful day I cry. *sigh*

I have driven by his death site many times...my wife of 25 years lived in Paso Robles and her siblings were born in the same hospital, War Memorial, where his body was taken after the crash. BTW, my wife worked in the ER of a different hospital in that area in the late 70's and she said that 41 & 46 junction where JD died was a death trap...she saw a lot a fatalities in the ER from that junction.

Sidebar: This is weird and a little kooky...my wife and I stopped at JD's memorial in
Cholame-Shandon, CA and took some pictures of the memorial. After we took the photos, we hopped in my little Mercedes 280c (a German coupe) and approached the same junction. I then made a turn to Kettlemen City and almost got nailed by a car that seemed to come out of nowhere...I had to make some serious ass manuvers and landed on the side of the road in cloud of dust...the oncomming car seemed to be driving at a very high speed and didn't seem like he saw my car...and it was late hazy afternoon day in early October

I agree with MJD .. there is no way that is Jimmie .. I doubt he was able to lift his head, let alone be conscious when the ambulance came .. he broke his neck in the car accident and was pretty much DOA ... I think, like it was posted previously, it was Rolf, his mechanic .. his damages were to his legs for the most part ..

No way that's James Dean, surely to God the speculation must have been ended by the rescue guys in the pic, i can't see for the life of me how they never ever made any comments regarding that pic at the time or in the years since ( i am assuming they are now dead )

Even their living relatives must know, does anyone actually know if the guys in the pic ever made any statements regarding the crash?

^^ I thought about that too .. if that was Dean, I am sure it would have been discussed and proven by the men on the scene, the photographer, etc .. so I don't buy it's Dean ..

I wonder too, if there are statements by the rescue team? or anyone on scene .. I know what I have read about the accident, and Jimmie's injuries, etc .. but I wonder if there is more I am missing!

    I

Ok, this is kinda weird, but here it goes. I once had a dream where I was back at my old elementary school. I was leaning against the stucco wall near the drinking fountain when I saw Jimmy approaching me. He walked up to me and just stared into my eyes. Then he grabbed my wrists rather forcefully and laid a passionate kiss on me. I was shocked (but excited) and I asked him, "Why did you do that"? He just looked at me and said, "Because thats the way I am". He then smiled and walked away. I watched him walk way into a burning sunset. Strange dream....

BTW, I still have to say it again how strange it is for his friend Rolf to have survived such a horrific crash with Jimmy only to be killed years later in another horrific crash.....

Sal Mineo was to have made some claim after Dean's death that they "could have been lovers" or something like that. I don't remember who he said that to. Also I believe there was a debate as to just how serious Sal Mineo was to have said that. A lot of people back then felt he was so full of it.

Back in the 80's I attended a Carol Burnett Q&A session . Carol was just starting out in Hollywood when James Dean died. For some reason somebody in the audience asked her a question about Dean. I remember Carol Burnett saying that James Dean was gay and everyone in Hollywood at the time pretty much knew it but because of the way things were back then it wasn't talked about in the open much like the case with Rock Hudson.

Woah, that's a heck of dream! Cute though, I love the "Because that's the way I am!" hahaha

That's interesting about Carol Burnett. I still say that no one can be entirely sure. So many people who claim that knew him claim different things. The Sal Mineo thing seems to be more of attention after Jimmy's Death.

    Thats Sal for ya

Not too long ago I remember watching some documentary about Sal Mineo. One scene I remember had him talking on a phone at his table in some restaurant ( this was shot a few years before his death ). He kept going on and on to whoever he was talking to on the phone about how he had all this money and was making this big budget picture and all these stars would be in and if that person would be a part of the team or something.

......and this is a guy who was reported at the time to be so broke he couldn't pay the rent !!!!

True, you just never know. I'm not saying that Jimmy or even Tyrone Power weren't Bi, heck nothing wrong with that, but I have also heard some people coming forward talking about it. Some people in the know have claimed to have been involved or had sex with Jimmy, Tyrone and even Marilyn Monroe, but others are swearing that many of these people are or were lying just for fame. They figured these celebs were dead, and couldn't contradict them. Again, I guess we really will never know.

I doubt we will really ever know either. Carol Burnett was just a young girl back in the mid 50s so I assume it was a case where she heard the rumors and took that as fact.

But......the story that has been told over the years about James Dean being into the bondage/S&M/leather scene...having this fetish of having men ( and I guess women too ) stubbing out their cigarettes and cigars on his chest didn't the autopsy report mention about those "strange burn scars" on his chest? I have heard yes it was indeed mentioned and I have also heard no that was a myth as well.

Yeah, I don't think we will ever truly know. Its hard to believe most these people because it just seems they were trying to capitalize on his death and the legendary status he acquired.

when there is a chance to make money out someone like jimmy
it must be very tempting for people who have known him,to write books and make all sort of claims about his life ... but its also sad.. and in some cases just sick. the bondage thing I mean .. its not fair jimmy can't defend himself

I can believe that he might have been gay or bi. But there's also a lot of wishful thinking involved in most people's cases, and yeah, let's make some money out of it, he can't sue, he's dad.

Sounds to me like Sal had a dream and it didn't come true when he said he and Jimmy could have been lovers.

Here's a tribute to Jimmy from a Finnish band. The video is not theirs but I couldn't find a better link. Apologies to fans of the band, I just didn't want to assume everyone knew them though I know some people on the board do. They also did one on Brandon Lee.

Who is in charge of Dean's estate? I am no lawyer but I think the estate can still sue on Dean's behalf. In the case of John Lennon I believe Yoko Ono has sued a few people over the years over things they have said about her late husband and all of this I am pretty sure was after his death.

But then again Ono was married to Lennon and does Dean still have any close living family ( those who really really knew him ) left? Maybe thats the difference as to if one can sue on the dead's behalf or not. I remember reading in the newspaper back when I was in high school ( mid 80s ) about some guy who claimed to be Lennon's male lover, how he was "going to tell all" in some future book and on talk shows. Then it seems like it was almost overnight..this guy disappeared and was never heard from again. I wonder if it was Yoko Ono and her lawyers who "shut him up"? Be kinda hard for a member of Dean's family who wasn't even alive at the time of his death to do the same thing.

The bondage rumor has always irked me. Has anyone seen the autopsy report on James Dean and seen whether or not this bit of info is on it? If it is..yeah.might be some truth ( heck for all we know Dean could have done this himself since he was a smoker and quite a wild guy at that ). But if it isn't...makes me wonder why this story is even repeated at all. I would imagine it wouldn't be all that hard to check out unless the autopsy reports are under lock and key...if thats the case...be hard to kill those rumors. Rumors are like roaches..always there and spreading.

Don't know so much about the bondage thing (nor the so-called S&M side of his sexuality ie. according to Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon the keloid scars found on Dean's body at his autopsy was 'proof' that he liked to have lighted cigarette ends stubbed on his body. Make of that whatever you will). However.....I think from the books which have been written about him the general consensus was that he was almost certainly bisexual and maybe, just maybe gay (though I'd say that was arguable). But that's no big deal; many actors and actresses experiment with members of their own gender. Look at Brando, for instance, a notorious, full-bloodied womaniser yet slept with men along the way, as well. Garbo, too, and Dietrich and Monty Clift and allegedly some of today's biggest stars.
