As for his movies: my pick of the bunch is Giant. I adore Elizabeth Taylor as well and this is more her movie than Jimmy or Rock's, but Dean's portrayal of Jett Rink is mindblowing. He, as do Liz and Rock, age from their late twenties to their sixties and do so with amazing talent in a day where older actors where instead "aged down" when the part called for that drastic change.
Giant is considered the Southwestern Gone With The Wind in every sense. James Dean steals the movie no doubt.
My second Jimmy pick is definitely East of Eden...The movie is great but I found it even more poignant after reading the book because it covers a vast amount of time that is essential to fully sense Cal's pain.
Believe it or not, I could do without Rebel Without a Cause...It's very well done but much too dated to have the same effect on me that the other two do.
The mask i spoke of before did belong to David Loehr who had it in his museum in Fairmont. Last i saw it was sold off at auction not to long ago. You know i loved Jimmy in Eden for the rejected son role he played, and in Giant for the lonesome cowboy who finally does good, but nothing leaves the essense of Dean better than Rebel. The movie envokes images of teen rebellion, exceptance, sexuality, along with the issue of woman taking a more prominent role in a male dominated society.I mean shit this even had hints of homo erotic thoughts. All this coupled along with that iconic image of a 24yr old red jacketed rebel makes for a movie made in 1955 light years ahead of its time. In cinema terms this movie is as important to the "youth" culture as Gone With The Wind is to the southern way of life.

Rebel without a cause can be a bit cringeworthy in parts, mainly as the film seems quaint and dated. Its more of a cliche!
East of Eden is a far better story and James Dean's acting is so incredible! Being his first film......... he was dead before even it was released, But the film holds up well and the themes dealt with are still relevent and the context doesnt date quite so easily!
Also James Dean is in almost every scene and he looks gorgous!
I have been a James Dean fan for a while now .. I have to admit, it was his good looks that drew me to him, nothing about his acting .. the first movie I saw him in was Rebel and I was curious about who he was .. I think I was about 13 when I saw that .. I read up on his life, and learned a lot and got instantly hooked!! I have books, and pictures, etc .. and all 3 of the movies ..
I think East of Eden is my favorite movie he did because of both the story and the acting .. just watching him in that movie does it for me!!
Rebel is not my favorite, the story is as said before, "dated" and "cliche" but I just focus on him .. LOL all his scenes, I am drawn to!!
Hmmmmmm/ I wonder who might like that......![]()
Stay in Drugs. Eat your School. Don't do Vegetables.
Hi all.....my first post (I've been lurking a bit, tho)!! I have read 'Surviving James Dean' by William Bast (sorry, I know someone posted about it on a previous page...) in it Bast apologizes for the ommisions from his 1956 autobiography of JD because of "legal constraints imposed by Warner Brothers studio & Bast's publishers, and out of respect for JD's family" The book is ok, a pretty good read....I also received 2 other books for xmas on Jimmy.....'James Dean - Fifty Years Ago' by Dennis Stock (which shows the casket shot posted earlier) and 'James Dean - Epitome of Cool - The Man, The Legend' by Jel. D Lewis (Jones). All interesting as far as information goes - you need to read them to decided for yourself what you believe to be true....much the same as MM, alot has been written about Jimmy in the last 50 years and I am sure that there are more than a few people still trying to make a buck off him.....:cool;
i just found out that the current road on the death highway isnt actually the road he died on. The road was re routed when it was ungraded. The actual intersection is still there but on private govenment property. You need permission to walk or drive it.
I'm planning on going to the James Dean festival in August. I will finally visit his grave and cry little a baby.
Wish I could be a judge in the James Dean look-a-like contest!!![]()
I would love to make it to that festival!! I am still planning on visiting his grave sometime in this lifetime!! LOL Just need to actually get off my ass and do it!!

What a specimen. Yummy Yummy. And he definetly was a 'death hag' just like us.
Midnight Express Brad Davis always reminded me of Jimmy Dean after that..
I was planning my summer vacation. I'll be at the James Dean festival in September!! WOHoooOoOOOooo! I'm also going to visit Elvis in August!! I'm getting all the info for my James Dean trip for the Deaners! Yes, James Dean fans are called "THE DEANERS!"![]()
I love Jimmy!!!
The guy that was in the car was a district service manager from Porche. Dean was having problems with the car and he met the DSM to have him test drive with him to diagnos the problem. I don'tknow why they keep saying he was a technician when he was an engineer from proche
Anyone else here like the old Eagles song James dean?
The way in which he died in an horrific car crash in that creepy car.. always make me think..
especially at intersections!!!

Yours will probably be merged with it at some point.![]()
I saw another photo of someone who was carried into an ambulance and you could see the person's hair. But that wasn't James Dean as it turned out. This is the first time I see that first photo.
Some people just need a high five.... in the face.... with a chair...
If This is the pic you mean.. it not fake...
You will notice in this pic the same to men again
again this is not faked
I was talking to a guy on a forum a while back.. he said that in high school during the 1950s, they used the james dean crash as something of a scare tactic, for young drivers not to speed.. they were shown pictures of the crashed car, and also his mangled body.
if hes right they cant have been detroyed by the photographer, and most likely there were copies made. __________________

I remember seeing that coffin picture at a gallery that was showing unseen Jimmy pics! There were so many cool pictures - he really liked to experiment!
He sure was pretty!

a great find on you tube!
I was reading the book "Laid Bare", by John Gilmore. Facinating look into some of the "stars" of that era. Anyway, one day John and Jimmy were in a hotel room, very drunk, and tried to get it on, but John said Jimmy was too big. They remained good friends until Jim's death.
He also said that Jimmy used people for whatever reason, and when he was done with them.. he just discarded them. He carried his belongings around in a paper bag. He liked to smoke pot. Great book for anyone interested, I found it pretty cheap on Amazon.

John Gilmore...that name sounds so very familiar. I think I have posted photos of them together, I know I had some. Pretty sure this is the guy who was obsessed with Dean and wanted to get it on with him. He's a nut. As for Jim 'using ppl', anyone who really knew him would disagree. Sounds like this Gilmore is a bit bitter, Jim probably told him to piss off.

The coffin pics were taken when Jim went back home to Fairmount with photographer Dennis Stock for a magazine article. They were walking past the funeral place and Jim went in and climbed in a coffin and told Dennis to take photos while he did different poses. Dennis was a little taken with his sudden urge to do this but went ahead and took them.
I DVR'd East of Eden recently. I think my favorite scene is where he takes his brother to meet their mother. His voice just DRIPS with sarcasm.
I love East of Eden. The part where jimmy tries to give his father the money, where he hugs him wasn't in the script he did it spur of the moment. The sound he makes after that, that cry as he is walking out the door is so real.
By the way, I think the guy on the left here is John Gilmore:

Could be, but doesn't look like any pics of his in his book.
ok this may be a little off subject but o well.my dad was doing a dick clark show in about 95 or 96 and whenever he would do shows that i wasnt abel to go to he would bring back something.well i think i was coming back from a camping trip and my dad tells me to look in the basement,so i go downstairs and i turn on the lights and when i turned on the lights all the bulbs blew and i saw a cut out of james dean,it scared the hell out of me,i dont know why but i hated that thing afterwards and i secretly threw it out a few months later.i cant even look at the famous pic of james in the red leather jacket without being a lil scared(thats what the cutout was).
Gilmore says that Jimmy's mother gave him t he middle name Byron after the crippled poet, Lord Byron, because she knew that Jimmy would grow up to have a crippled soul.
One more thing in the book that made me mad was that Steve McQueen was going around telling everyone that he was GLAD James Dean was dead, because he was a rival, and now he'd have a chance at more movie parts. Sick jerk. Ruined my image of Steve McQueen.
Yeah Jimmys mother was very into the arts and read him poetry so gave him the middle name Byron.
IF that steve McQueen story is true, I'd be flattered by it. James was only alive to see East of Eden premiere, the other 2 weren't even out yet. And to have the highest paid movie star of that era say that, wouldn't you be flattered? Bruce Lee's main goal was to eventually be in movies that paid more than what McQueen got. He wrote it on paper all his goals. Funny thing is McQueen ended up becoming Bruce's student.
But like I said, it's been a while since reading on James but from memory and talking to other fans that Gilmore was a nut.
I surely don't believe everything I read, however, a lot of the stories in Gilmore's book have been told by other people also. Not saying that makes them TRUE, but maybe a little more likely. And yes, after reading the book, Gilmore did a lot of crazy sh#t in his day!!!

I love Jimmy I have since I was a kid. my mom still buys me little pictures and nik-naks . I havn't seen any pictures. only of the car smashed up. if anyone knows where to find any let me know i would love to see them. One of the best Jimmy things my mom bought me was a bio book with alot of pictures. I love it, it sits on my coffee table for any one to pick up.
I dug that book out again, and that IS in fact Gilmore with Jimmy in that picture. They DID do a lot of weird sh*t; and another one that hung around Gilmore and was NUTS was Dennis Hopper. I love him as an actor, he seems like someone who would have a wild streak!!!
And what is it about that car.... why is it creepy... besides the fact that Dean died in it.... every time I saw a picture of it, it gave me an uneasy feeling. Like it had a life of it's own... like Stephen King's Christine.

I love this picture from East of Eden of Julie and Jimmy. It's quite sensual I think.

I know how Abra feels!!!(similar situation myself!)
I love all of his movies! I enjoy watching him in Rebel, but that is my least favorite of the three .. I also enjoy watching Natalie in that movie too .. a lot of people in this thread said Giant is their least favorite, but I kind of like him in that movie! I love that movie!! Such a shame we lost him at such a young age! I would have loved to see what else he could have done, then there would be more opportunities to look at his gorgeous face!!![]()
