I've always wondered, was James Dean a big deal while he was still alive? I'm sure he wasn't as popular during his brief career as he is in death, but I was always curious what his status was.
Not at all. His movies came out around the same time...within a few months time. BAM - BAM - BAM. He filmed East of Eden first, then quickly to Rebel Without a Cause. Rebel is what really sent him into the limelight - having a huge teen following. But by the time it really got an audience he was dead - Giant being relased after his car accident. He never really saw his star rise...it all happened so fast.
It is why people speculate if he became so popular because of the irony that the public would never see what he could have been - some believe that speculation was because of who he never was.
I being a very very dedicated James Dean fan mourn for the man that never had a chance to live. He was never able to become a great actor or fail. People can think what they want - he was overrated, he was special. Whatever. My heart just aches for him. The man. The boy, really. He was so sad in life.
Was JD really bisexual or is that just a myth?
i have read a lot about him at length, so this is my own personal assessment. it seems to me he was bi-sexual when it best suit him. of course there are not many who can actually tell you the positive truth, like if he actually ENJOYED being with men. but he did bed women and he also at least flirted with men. it is known that he spent time with older men in the biz socially and that helped him to get parts or at least read for them. he was the arm candy of a very prominent older gay man who paraded him around and was essentially his sugar daddy. when jimmy ran low on cash, he would "visit" with this man for extended periods of time. disappear, quite frankly. the truth is that jimmy was a very eccentric person, he was all about trying something for the sake of trying it. this is true not only about relationships but with projects. he danced in the studios with Eartha Kitt for a time, was an amateur musician and photographer - but he gre bored of things easily and quickly. the same can be said of relationships. he was a user and an abuser - perhaps taken from the different times in his life when he was used and abused. again - he was a very lost, tragic soul. he really didn't know who he was or where he was going. if he dwelled on the fact much it would really bog him down. he would have fits of anger followed by depression. very volitile.
thank you for that, i appreicate your info! James Dean reminds me alot of myself I guess now that I have read that. I can definatley relate
Thanks for responding. That's so sad that he never got to see his star rise. I recently watched the James Dean movie and he did seem like a very sad soul. His relationship with his dad, or lack thereof, seemed to really affect him as well. I felt really bad for him.
Thanks Ruby for all your info. You make me fall in love with him. You have a great way with words my friend![]()

Ruby, I have no doubt he would have been a huge success even if there had never been an accident. He was a special talent and he came across the screen with a huge appeal toward young people as well as the ladies. Fans really STILL would have consider him a Rebel even if he had lived. jmo
Hey, thanks Sweets.![]()
I truely, truely love the man. A good book to read about him is called Dizzy & Jimmy: A love Story. It was a quick read - I devoured it in hours. It is written by a former lover - the woman who played Jerry's mom in Seinfeld. She loved him deeply and it really gives you an idea of how damaged he was.
You can get it from your local library - let me know what you think. Or I can send you my copy to borrow.![]()
i believe he had the potential. his first two movies were not much of a stretch for him. giant was the real gold. not a big part, but enough to see he STRETCHED - he reached for that character.
however, i feel if he had not died when he did he may have destroyed himself in other ways eventually. he was self destructive that way.
Some people claim he was bisexual and others claim he was totally gay?
I read that he loved actress Pier Angeli and one story is that when
Pier Angeli married Vic Damone, James Dean was sitting outside the church in a motorcycle heartbroken.
Again I'm not sure if the story is true. Maybe someone else knows
more about this.

Yeah I read that her mom was a real piece of work.
Was he gay?
The Wedding story has been circulating around since the 60's.

take it for what it is worth. I don't think he was TRULY gay. he may have been bi-curious and he may have found himself in a situation that made him chose to act out a certain way. many celebs say he slept with men. he very well might have. but i don't think that made him gay.
Good assessment Ruby Slippers!
Being that he died so young (sigh) we probably will never know everything
about him. And just about everyone that did know him usually won't say
a word or they are now deceased. Maybe there isn't alot to tell?
Elizabeth Taylor and Martin Landau are only 2 of the people that
knew him and they aren't talking.
And I guess why should they?

James Dean's former HS
faces demolition
Group drops plans to renovate
structure

FAIRMOUNT, Ind. (AP) - The high school where James Dean was first exposed to acting may be demolished now that a California group has dropped its plans to renovate the structure.
Historic Properties Inc. chief executive officer Ray Willey recently transferred the old Fairmount High School back to a local sports group after fundraising efforts failed.
The Madison-Grant Youth Basketball League says it plans to tear down the school. President Bob Zirlke says the building is so deteriorated that it's falling in on itself.
Dean performed at the school in plays that fueled his interest in acting. After graduating in 1949, he landed iconic roles in "Rebel Without a Cause" and two other major films before dying at age 24 in a car crash.
Jack Foster is
doing a short video program on James Deans last day and would like
to interview his fans in the LA. Any James Deans
fans who might want to appear on camera talking aboutJD..

Okay, that car was a rolling death trap. Built for speed, not much else. Almost like a Corvette, which only has 1/2 of a frame. That's why the total distruction of the front end. It just buckled like a tin can. The 60's had cars that were built much safer, heavy cars like Cadillacs and Olds that had full frames-they were like driving a tank. Had James Dean been driving a regular car, he may have survived the crash. The other driver did.
Had Dean been driving the 1955 Ford station wagon, towing a trailer with the race car on it as originally planned, the outcome might well have been quite different. The other car would have been clobbered with the combined weight of three vehicles (the station wagon, the trailer, and the race car on it). There's no way of knowing if Dean and his friends would have been uninjured, but I don't think there's much question that the other car and driver would have come out far the worse from THAT encounter.
Of course, there's a geater chance that the other driver would have SEEN the oncoming station wagon, and waited for it to pass before he turned.
I think Jimmy loved Pier. Her witch of a mother disapproved of Jimmy because Jimmy wasn't Catholic or Italian.
According to Leonard Rosenman, who wrote the musical score for East Of Eden, Jimmy believed he was the father of Pier's son Perry, who was born during her marriage to Vic Damone.
Pier committed suicide in the early 70s.![]()
I'm a huge JD fan, have all the movies, posters, even the stamp that came out with his picture on it. I have a whole sheet of those.
Great actor, gone WAY too soon, but never, ever forgotten.
She also disapproved of Jimmy because he was loud, rude, and dishelved. He was not a nice person sometimes and he was known not to have much in the area of manners and tact. She wasn't the only Hollywood mom to disapprove of Jimmy.
I never heard that Jimmy thought Perry was his. This pic kinda looks like him though. Perry Damone is the young man in the back. Mybe I am reading too much into his sulky look. It is his mother's funeral, after all...I don't think he looks like Vic or Pier.

Fantastic update on James Dean on Fad Home! Loved it Scott! Hey also forgot to mention the article in Australian Sydney Morning Herald Spectrum on Scotts tours. Brillant! I will definately do the tour as soon as I fly Virgin to LA!
New update is great! So much new info as always, a homerun. FAD is my crack. Damn you, Scott!
If you haven't re-read the new article by Scott, go there immediately! It's really good. Thanks, Scott. x
Man...as a Central Cali native...I've had more than a few relatives born at War Memorial Hospital and those that died were processed at Khuel's Funeral Home...been through Cholame at the 41 & 46 junction more times than I can remember...it's an awful attempt at Hwy planning
isn't it terrible?! i have a friend that rides his bike everywhere - there isn't even a shoulder to ride on. he's been run off the road many a times. SO DANGEROUS. the CHP told him - it is against the law to ride your bike on this highway, but he can't get from town to his home any other way. he doesn't drive! idiots.
Not to be a wet blanket but so much of what people say and write about James Dean is just utter BS. Dennis Hopper praddles on about he and Dean when, in fact, he barely associated with him. The Pier Angeli thing is just full of tripe as are the tales of his alleged homosexuality (for which there is zero evidence). People who barely knew the guy get to bask in the light of the attention Dean once received and create exotic stories about him. I guess, with Dean, the fiction is so much more interesting.
He was beautiful, young, rebellious, and Rebel was released one week after his death ... no wonder he's considered an icon/cult figure. He quickly became tabloid fodder ...
I'm reading Vanity Fair, Tales of Hollywood, 2008, "Rebels, Reds, and Graduates, and the Wild Stories behind the making of 13 Iconic Films.
The person who captured my interest was Nicholas Ray, writer and director of Rebel.
