A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Happy 40th Birthday, River! (8/23) Wow, now I feel old because my teen idol is 40!

I watched Explorers, Stand By Me, A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, and A Thing Called Love today. My mini tribute to River.I can't believe he would have been 40.
RIP

He was great in My Private Idaho with Keanu Reeves. He would have really had a great career had he lived. He has already left behind alot to be proud of.
40? Wow. How fast time flies. Happy Birthday, River.
RIP beautiful boy. 17 years ago tonight.
And he deserved this why?
and how lucky they are to not have to endure the dreadful disease of addiction.
right...and as we all have been been angst ridden teenagers (you included), you never had an attitude or felt out of place or felt the urge to buck the status trend....IOW be a rebellious teenager?
Sanctimonious persona = your posted commentary
Was it him, or the disease of addction? If you've never walked in those shoes honey, HOW DARE YOU pass such condescending judgment on others?
Shame on you.
RIP River. 17 years, wowie zowie!
River was a GREAT ACTOR!!! i believe Jouquin is starting to act rather strangely. When Jouquin was interviewed on "Letterman" he was acting REALLY WEIRD!!! I think Letterman was starting to get embarrassed and tried to improvise. When Letterman realized that he wasn't getting through, he cut the interview short. I couldn't watch anymore, so turned the channel. Jouquin was FLAWLESS in "Walk The Line", but maybe River's untimely death is starting to get to him, I don't know. I pray Jouquin doesn't end up like his brother. Such a talented family!!!
My near connection with River occurred during (or shortly after) "Sneakers" An intermediary contacted me about converting his 1950's Buick (or was it an Olds) from 6 volts to 12 volts. This was something like 18 years ago so the details have gotten fuzzy but as I hadn't heard of him at that time the name River always stuck in my pinhead.
Unless I missed them (didn't go thru all 19 pages of this thread) where are the death pix? Did they disappear since originally posted?
Hi All. Dont know if this has been posted but many many years ago River and Joaquin were in an after school special called The Backwards Riddle of Dyslexia. wouldnt you know, some kind soul has finally posted it to youtube. Funny seeing them in live action together!

Wasn't his family for a time member's of "The People's Temple" cult that eventually ended in the Jonestown massacre? I think he had hippy parents who didn't give him a very clear set of boundaries. Don't get me wrong, I tend to have a lot of hippy values myself, but when I have kids, they aren't going to be free to do whatever the hell they please. Kids need rules of right and wrong very firmly given growing up.
No. They were members of another cult: The Children of God. It's my understanding that his family left the cult early, when the mother realized that the cult's beliefs and practices were changing, and were no longer what she wanted for her family. Phoenix did allude in at least one interview at some kind of sexual abuse early in his childhood, while still in the cult, though.
His upbringing was unconventional for sure, but I don't know if I would say he lacked values. River is always described as kind, caring, respectful, etc. by those who knew him. I've seen people from all walks of life and backgrounds succumb to drug addiction, even people with loving parents and solid upbringings. So ... who knows.
It said on River's page here that he was in the Red Hot Chilli Pepper's video "Under the Bridge" and I honestly don't remember seeing him in that video. What part of the video was he in? thanks in advance!
I thought thry wrote a song about him. he's in a video? I googled it but nothing came up.
I dunno. I just watched the whole thing. I hate RHCp. i didn't see anything. I also watched Scar Tissue & didn't see him there either.
Sorry you had to suffer through the video for nothing, RaRa. I'm a longtime RHCP fan and have watched that video countless times over the years, and if River is in it, then there's something wrong with my eyes because I've never seen him.
But seriously, as far as I know, River is not in any RHCP video. I think the rumor got started because of what I like to call the "My Own Private Idaho connection." The video for the song Under the Bridge was directed by Gus Van Sant, the same guy who wrote and directed My Own Private Idaho. Flea (bassist for RHCP) met Van Sant during the filming of My Own Private Idaho (he was in that movie with River), and afterward asked him to direct the video for the song.
Flea and River were friends, and Flea rode with River in the ambulance the night River died. River also, at some point, met John Frusciante (guitarist for the RHCP). The two recorded some songs together (and I'm using the term 'songs' loosely, here) which John later released in his now infamous solo, drug-fueled album, Smile from the Streets You Hold.
The song Under the Bridge is about drug addiction, and River, of course, died as a result of drugs.
So there are a lot of loose connections, which I can see how they would give birth to an urban legend. But, no, I'm 99.99 percent certain River is not in that video.

Did I miss something. The original post say's "dead pics" but I haven't seen any. Hmmmm.
A while ago someone posted River's "dead pic" in the thread (not a link, the actual pic), and some people complained. I saw it when I first joined the boards and went through the entire thread. I think the "dead pic" warning was added because of that. The pic might have been removed since, but it was the same pic that's in River's page at the FAD website (the one of him in the coffin, that was first published by the Enquirer), so you didn't miss anything.![]()

This is a video of River Phoenix and his girlfriend singing during a film role. I did hear that she was at his side when he died. They seemed like a nice couple.
I caught a little bit of "Dogfight" on TV this morning, and wowza! I've watched a lot of River's movies, but it's been a while since I've seen him on film, but man, he was beautiful! And such an actor! His brother Joaquin is awesome, but I think River was just on a whole other level. It would have been great to see how far he could go. Such a waste.
Anyway, I've only seen bits and pieces of "Dogfight"; it's about a bunch of Marines who are being shipped out to Vietnam, in 1963, and they have a contest to see who can bring the ugliest date to their party. He asks Lili Taylor, but then he ends up really liking her. Now I need to watch the whole thing!
Will 'Dark Blood' ever be released? I was reading about River, and watching clips of it last night... They were almost finished filming, with only a few days left.
The end of 'Stand By Me' has become a heartfelt foreshadowing of his death... I get teary-eyed every time I watch it.
And, I have to disagree with an earlier post... River may have done drugs, but he did everything possible to keep his drug use a secret. I was so upset when I heard of his death, and even more so, when I found out this supposed to be healthy vegetarian, who was so caught up in environmental issues, died from a drug overdose.
I was shocked. If there was ever a reason to not do drugs... This was definitely it.
My understanding is that there's no intention to release "Dark Blood" and there's never been. I'm not sure about the reason why (if the movie is too incomplete, poor quality, something that has to do with legal/business reasons, or something we wouldn't know about).
I understand you being shocked when River died -- I was too -- but not because he was a vegan who did drugs. River's veganism was a sociopolitical statement and had nothing to do with wanting to be healthy or having people think he led a 'clean' lifestyle. He was an animals' rights activist who believed it was unethical for humans to use (and abuse) animals for consumption, profit or any other purpose. I'm only bringing this up because I've seen other people (not you!) call River a hypocrite because he was a vegan and did drugs, but for River, veganism was about the animals, not him and his health, so in his mind there was probably no contradiction there.![]()
Sigh I still miss him. Such a shame.
Ba bump. Now I know this isn't the same, but back when I was a pothead, when I would smoke too much or a strong strain, I would get so high it was really scary. I would sit there while everyone was having a good time I would be telling myself it would be over soon.
Now, if River was already well stoned when he got to the Viper and unable to speak. It must have been so frightening! Why keep on doing more drugs? What a horrifying, painful death. Should he have lived, he wouldnt have been the same person.
excited for this http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmb...r-phoenix-film
Oh wow. I hope not. That is the absolute worst movie ever made. Ever.
Friend or not that movie was bad. Truly, it wasn't out there it's just bad. I like out there. And I like River's work. His other work.
Hopefully they release this movie.

wow after all this time
In just a few minutes it will be 18 years.
They were showing I Love You to Death on broadcast TV yesterday and I noticed this one young actor that I hadn't seen for a while. I couldn't remember his name but remembered his face and thought to myself that he was once so popular and couldn't understand why I hadn't seen him in anything for a while. Then it dawned on me that the actor was River Phoenix. How sad, what a loss.
Any day above ground is a good day.
