Yes, I do believe Meredith Salinger was in Jimmy Reardon with him. His character was a sex-addicted teenager. *giggle* It was QUITE risque that I got to watch that for the first time as a pre-teen...Good thing my parents had no idea what it was about!

Have you guys ever seen My Own Private Idaho? or Dogfight? These are also good River films.

My Own Private Idaho is my fave River film, i have seen Dogfight but was a long time ago so can't remember much apart from he was a soldier and they had to find the ugliest girl or something to that effect

Dogfight was set in the '60s; River plays a soldier on his last night home before he's shipped to Vietnam. He and his buddies have a party, and the one who brings the ugliest girl wins. Definitely one of my favorites, not only for River but also a great performance by Lili Taylor.

^^ I agree .. Dogfight is a great movie .. I know a few Marines too, and they would certainly act like they did in the movie, even today!! I have .. Jimmy Reardon on tape at home too.. and I like the part where Ione Skye (from Say Anything) is in the bedroom and wants him to pretend he is Jack the Ripper or something coming to 'rape' her while watching an old movie .. I just laugh at him in that part because he complains about how rediculous it is .. LOL

Just watched "My own Private Idaho" again for like the hundreth time. I think Leo DiCaprio would have a very different career if River was still around. They certainly are very similar in acting styles

Leo took one of the film roles that River had planned to act in before he died. I think the film was called Total Eclipse. It was about 2 French poests Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. It had a R rating in America because of the nude scenes in it.

I just got done watching Stand By Me. I didn't realize that Richard Dryfuss was the narrator,or that the movie was based off of The Body by Steven King.

I agree. I think DiCaprio is the 'heir apparent' of Phoenix and infact he played the role of that great renegade gay poet Arthur Rimbaud in a movie that Phoenix was to star in (infact DiCaprio looked remarkably similar to Rimbaud as it happens, though the film itself wasn't too good sadly).

That movie was on this morning when I was getting ready for work so I watched it!! I never pass it up if its on tv!! Although the editing takes away from the movie, but still, River was such a cutie!!

This was the first time i was able to catch it on amc. I remember when i saw it the first time,Gordy,Jerry O'Connel and Corey Feldman got on my nerves so bad,and guess what, they still do! Its a good thing River was in that show or else it totally would have stunk for me! Like Interview with a Vampire, hate it,but i know i would have like it with River in it! But he was in that weird movie Silent Tongue or whaterver its called and i hate that so,never mind!

^^ I never saw Silent Tongue, and have no desire to .. I loved River as an actor, as well as for his looks (shallow, I know) but there were just some movies I wouldn't watch him in, or didn't enjoy seeing the character he played ..

I always like the characters in SBM .. they are annoying, but my sister and I have nicknames for eachother which we still use today, she is Vern, I am Teddy .. LOL it's just something we do!!

Oh my gosh...ya know something... You are right! I love them both.
I really like that Leo has a good head on his shoulders, he isn't all screwed up and making headlines everyday with shit that doesn't matter and is mostly damaging to himself like MOST of hollywood does today. Instead he keeps a low profile, makes headlines only with films and things that ACTUALLY make a difference in the world, like goin green and also... The guy is very close to AND takes care of his Grandmother. I mean how could you say bad thing about someone like that???

    I agree with you

Some people give him a lot of crap as a bad actor but... They are totally missing out on real talent, I think he is great! And I am VERY critical of actors. I wonder what kind of films River would have been selectove with in todays art world?

Running on Empty was my fave River flick and I've been a fan since Explorers His acting was best in SBM, Running on Empty and My Own Private Idaho. I can't believe that this Halloween will mark the 15th anniversary of his passing. Christ, I'm old....

Man I feel old! I was like 18 when River died. I can't believe he's been gone that long. Wonder if his family celebrates halloween? I wouldn't,I do because i have a son,but seriously River comes to mind when i'm out there having fun,i really do feel bad.

No they don't look anything alike. They do have the same parents. I think River looks more like his mother.

Found a few pics of the Phoenix family. River and the youngest sister (Summer? The one married to Casey Affleck) are the only ones who look like their mom. The rest are ALL dad.

When I was a junior in high school, they filmed the movie Little Nikita here in San Diego where I live. If anyone has seen it, the beginning of the movie has a parade where his family is on a float. Well, they needed a marching band to be his character's high school band, so they hired the band at my high school. We shot on set for two days down in La Mesa (south San Diego), doing the parade scene. We had to have tutors on the set and do school work for some of the time. I'm not sure if we got credit in the movie, but I can pick myself out in the brief scene (because I was so tall). I even got his autograph. So there's my brush with fame. I was in a movie with River Phoenix and Sidney Poitier.

Funny, I didn't get any residuals from that.....

River looks a great deal like his mom in the first picture.I don't know why,but I use to think that Summer and Liberty? were twins.

Yes, it was hot. We had to sit around in these tents all day in our wool marching uniforms. But that's okay. At least I've had my 15 seconds of fame.

Wow coming up to 15 years.
Its still so sad to think about. He trully was a talented young actor and could have gone so far. Personally I think he would have gone into directing. I knoe he wanted to be a musician but I really think directing is where he would have ended up. And a very good one at that.

I listened to the Aleka's Attic link you posted, and it was good until it got to the screaming part...and then it just wasn't my thing. Miss River though. Three more weeks and it'll be 15 years! What a bummer. I have to go check that coffin picture out, though....anyone got a link?

  37. #587

I saw the coffin picture of River. It was kinda gross, but not really. I think they did a nasty job embalming him though, because his face looks kinda weird, and his mouth is open a little bit. Looks like there's some bruising as well. I know this probably bothers some people, but it didn't bother me...maybe I'm just weird...

Right now i'm watching Stand By Me, its at the part where Gordy is telling a story about a kid named lard ass there's something about a pie eating contest. I had forgotten about that part, its not my favorite because everyone starts puking on each other. Gross.

So, was there ever a definitive answer given, on whether that picture of River in his coffin is actually real, or was photoshopped? It first appeared in the National Enquirer didn't it? So, I'd consider the source in determining if that pic is REALLY real.

I think it was real. The family never said it wasn't, and I seem to remember Joaquin talking about it in interviews...how angry he was (and rightly so..) I doubt he would have brought it up otherwise. JMO, of course.

I actually read on there that a photographer actually moved the body to get a better photo or something to that effect...maybe I'm wrong, but I swear that's what FAD said. Either way, that's kind of gross and disrespectful, to touch someone's remains after their gone just for a photo op...and look at what the photo did anyways! I feel so sorry for Joaquin and his family...

In all fairness just beause you are a vegetarian does not mean you are a health nut. There are many reasons to not eat meat. Some people just find the slaughtering process cruel. My friend was a vegan for a long time but now that he has a small farm he will eat the odd egg or drink milk right from the teat. It's more of an ethical thing than a health thing.

yeah no disrespect at all, its just his family was all lets live in tents on the beach and be all natural....meanwhile stuffing his vein with toxin herion and codine and whatever else he had in his system. Its sad..its too bad he did not follow that with regards to drug use.

Maybe if he had, he'd still be alive today...who can say? All I know is its been fifteen years on Halloween, and I kinda miss the guy. He had so many things going for him and the drugs just stole his life. What a bummer.
