You may have converted a fan here. Obviously I've heard of Jean but can't say I have ever seen any of her films and always prefered Marilyn but after reading the posts, my interest has been sparked.

So any recommendations for a complete novice, what's the best film/book to start with?

Jeanâ??s elaborate marble crypt in the Sanctuary of Benediction inside the Great Mausoluem, Forest Lawn Glendale cost William Powell a reported $25,000.

It is gorgeous, with a bench and its own stained glass skylight. There are three spaces in the crypt, Jeanâ??s is simply marked â??Our Baby.â?�

Her neighbor was Irving Thalberg and she was just a few yards away from her co-star in Dinner at Eight, Marie Dressler. In the years that followed, the hallway completely filled up, with Red Skelton, Norma Shearer and Sid Grauman joining. William Powellâ??s parents were also entombed in this hallway. Jeanâ??s mother,â?�Mama Jean,â?� occupies one of the other spaces in the crypt, but the third is emptyâ??forever. Many speculate that Powell intended that space for himself. If so, it didnâ??t come to fruition, for he is buried in Cathedral City next to his son and his widow.

Recently saw an interesting Harlow item - apparently two sisters have found the long-lost Jean Harlow portrait entitled "Farewell To Earth", which had been presumed permanently lost forever. I've read a lot about this portrait that her mother had commissioned after Harlow's death, but never expected it would be located! Great find and what a fantastic piece of Hollywood history! Just goes to show that there are still amazing things out there in people's homes or abandoned in various places. There's a vid on youtube about it, I couldn't seem to post the link, but if you search "Jean Harlow painting" it'll come up. Happy Holidays to all the Harlow fans!

The two sister found it at a uncles house .everything else they say is speculation ...Darrell Rooney co-author of the 2011 book "HARLOW in HOLLYWOOD" won the auction . Apart from being a writer is also a longtime Hollywood historian specializing in Jean Harlow's story. The 1937 painting "Farewell to Earth" is THE "Holy Grail" of all Harlow artifacts because it has been missing for over 50 years. wow, thanks for following up on the auction...$35K ...amazing! It is a beautiful painting, so unique and really captures the feeling associated with Harlow's early death, that otherworldly feel. It would be interesting to know precisely the journey the painting went on after Harlow's mother died. I would presume that's probably the point at which it went missing back in the 50's perhaps....fascinating!

Your welcome ! You are spot on, it does have that otherworldly vibe to it. One of calm and serenity. Yes, I would love to know what happened to it after Mama Jean passed on. How many hands did it pass through before being found again ? Considering it is in what appears to be remarkable condition, it must have been cared for very well by those who had it. I agree with you, it is fascinating, I do hope we get the story on it !

Yes. This photo surfaced on the net within the last few days. I've heard from fans who have been collecting Harlow images for decades state that they've never seen this photo. It also gives the false illusion that she was tallish, but the two people in the photo are very short. Jean was asked about her stats in a 1933 interview:

Q. How much do you weigh, and what are your exact measurements?

A. According to the studio wardrobe department's chart, I am five feet, one and one-half inches tall and weigh one hundred and eight pounds. My other measurements are: bust, thirty-five inches; waist, twenty-three and a half inches; hips, thirty-five and a half inches. I wear size twelve dresses, size six-and-a-quarter gloves and size three-and-one- half-B shoes.

Still, I find her life and, even more so, death, fascinating, and so was the release of the movie after her death, too, a release Scott Michaels could have sponsored.

I see Dorothy Stratten, aka Mother Theresa, has been popular on the forum lately, Jean Harlow deserves a proper biopic too, made by a decent director with a proper screenplay.

Arched eyebrows were considered by some to be very stylish in the early thirties (think also of Marlene Dietrich). By the time of her death MGM was "softening" Jean's look by giving her more naturally-contoured eyebrows, less-garish coiffures etc. Between the Legion of Decency, the Hayes Office, the Breen office and Christ only knows what other self-appointed censors were around, golden-hearted floozies were being phased out and Jean was getting more sympathetic roles (think of Wife Versus Secretary, for example). With the nicer roles came a less-garish appearance in terms of makeup etc.

Consider this: the vogue in the twenties seemed to be for women to cover their foreheads, either with their flapper-bangs or their cloche hat. As Grandpa Simpson would say, "Which was the style at the time!"

Jean Harlow deserves a proper biopic too, made by a decent director with a proper screenplay.

Agreed, the two so-called movie biographies made in the 60's sucked IMO. The whole matter concerning the circumstances Paul Bern's murder/suicide will have to be pure conjecture, since no one alive really knows what happened. Those who were involved who "knew" what happened took that knowledge with them to their graves.
That being said, we should all count our blessings that Loni Anderson is far too old to be considered for the Harlow role. Lord, please keep her from playing Mama Jean!!!
As I mentioned in Thelma Todd's thread, Loni was 45/46 when she played Thelma (who died at the age of thirty). IMO Loni played the role as "Loni Anderson dressed as Jayne Mansfield, if Jayne had played Thelma Todd".

Most definitely: young Marlene Dietrich is a butterface as far as I am concerned because of this eyebrowless look. Plus the fact that she screwed JFK. A definite turnoff. She died in her bed like a boring moron, wheras Jean Harlow died in tragedy.

Harlow had a body like a sculpture and face that did not need makeup as she grew older she became more natural..
