LOS ANGELES (Oct. 2) - House Peters Jr., a TV actor who became the original Mr. Clean in Proctor & Gamble's commercials for household cleaners, died Wednesday. He was 92.
Peters died of pneumonia at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Hospital in Los Angeles, said his son, Jon Peters.

House Peters Jr. (left), seen here with his silent film star dad House Peters Sr. in 1951, died at the age of 92 after a long career in Hollywood. While he acted in many movies, he was best known for his bald-headed Mr. Clean commercial character.

The elder Peters' most memorable role came as Mr. Clean - a muscular man with a bald head, a hoop earring and a no-nonsense attitude toward dirt and grime. From the late 1950s and into the early 1960s, Peters Jr. helped advertise the famous household cleaner with the trademark jingle, "Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean."
Peters Jr. played many supporting roles through his career, including working with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry on their television shows. He also appeared in "Perry Mason," "Gunsmoke," "The Twilight Zone" and "Lassie."
"He always played the heavy," Jon Peters said, referring to his father's customary roles as a villain or brawny character. "Even though he wasn't happy about being cast in those roles, he worked really hard at it."
His father's acting career spanned 1935-1967, according to his Web site. He also wrote an autobiography, "Another Side of Hollywood," in which he describes growing up the son of an actress and silent film actor in Beverly Hills. His father, Robert House Peters Sr., has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Peters Jr. was never a leading man, but played many character parts in cowboy movies and won a Golden Boot Award in 2000 for his lifetime contributions to the western genre, his son said.
Peters Jr. was born Jan. 12, 1916, in New Rochelle, N.Y., as Robert House Peters Jr. His son said Peters Jr. studied drama in high school and became inspired to pursue an acting career.
He also is survived by his wife, Lucy Pickett, a daughter, another son and four grandchildren.

That's the bitter irony--he cleaned so often he didn't build up any immune system to fight the pneumonia.

    MR Clean

I always thought Mr. Clean was a genie.
I just looked up in wikipedia that most people also thought so.
    He was actually a sailor.
I wonder what kind of sailor now!
What the artist was thinking of and what the sexual orientation of the artist was.

    This is from wikipedia.

The product's Mascot is the character Mr. Clean.
In 1957, Harry Barnhart conceived the idea and Ernie Allen in the art department at the advertising agency Tatham-Laird & Kudner in Chicago,Illinois drew Mr. Clean as a muscular, tanned, bald man who cleans things very well.
According to Procter & Gamble, the original model for the image of Mr. Clean was a US Navy Sailor from the city of Pensacola, Fl.
Although most people think he is a genie based on his earring, folded arms, and tendency to magically appear at the appropriate time

It seems smart to rely on the strength of a brawny sailor to help get your kitchen in ship-shape. If he were a genie, I suppose we would have just wished for a clean house.
This leads us to wonder whether Mr. Clean and Sailor Jack (the Cracker Jack icon) have ever sailed together.

    Mr Clean

Although I am sorry for his death, I gotta admit the commercials for Mr Clean used to creep me out as a child, kinda like the Burger King commercials do now--a man just pops up outta no where and looks like that!! Maybe it's just me.....but by today's standards, I would say he was kinda hot.....

    Mr. Peters

House Peters, Jr and myself were both cancer survivors which gave us something in common enough to form a friendship..He was an easy-going gentleman who remained friends with all of his fellow workers, especially Roy Rogers and Dale Evans..He was always happy to greet fans and sign autographs..He truly deserves to be remembered.
