    Obersalzberg - Museum and Bunkers

Not sure if anyone is interested but a few days ago I went on a fieldtrip to visit the Obersalzberg with the museum and the bunkers.

Story behind this is that my grandma grew up at the Obersalzberg and at times worked for Karl Schuster, back then the owner of the "Hotel Türken" which was situated right next to Hitlers "Berghof".

The "Hotel Türken" was rebuilt after war by Karl Schusters daughter and is still open nowadays and run by Schusters granddaughter Ingrid Scharfenberg.

I was very lucky to meet her that day and had a very long and wonderful talk with her as she remembered my grandma clearly and had many interesting stories to tell!

I'll refrain from posting lengthy explanations about the history of the whole area because I think that would break the mould and will instead just post the pictures I took with a short explanation of what is shown on them.

Comments and questions are requested and very welcome.

Last but not least, thanks Jim for encouraging me to post this thread!

    Thank you Boxofpandoraz!!

    @midnightlamp

I think the elevator you are talking about is the elevator to the "Kehlsteinhaus" / "Eagle's Nest" ? It was planned and built under the control of Bormann and given to Hitler for his 50th birthday.

It still exists and the elevator transports visitors up there although it's not used to transport Autos and I don't know if it was used to transport Autos back then.

    Thank you KristinEileen!
I doubt they will ever open it! Officially this part is closed because it's accident-prone and not safe to walk within but even if it would be safe they'd probably keep it locked because of fear that some unteachables would use it as a meeting point to worship Hitler.

Those are facinating pictures you posted, I'd enjoy it even more if I could read and write in German (I Can't) even though I'm at least 1/4 German. If those walls could only talk, what stories they would tell.

The special edition included an imprinted inscription of the the then mayor of Berchtesgaden and wa handed out to every bridal pair at the registry office. I don't know if that was only done in Berchtesgaden or if there where other special editions though.
Maybe it was only for Berchtesgaden because Hitler wrote the second part of "Mein Kampf" at the Obersalzberg?

I love these pics; history captured; yet I somehow felt disappointed; and I only now realize that my disappointment stems from the fact that you are not in any of them.

I grew up an Army Brat and my Dad was stationed in Germany twice. He was a Chaplain and they always used to hold the religious retreats in Bertchesgarden. There were bunkers all over the grounds of the hotel (all sealed up, of course), but it was still fun to go explore. And no trip to Bertchesgarden is complete without a visit to the Eagle's Nest.

The last I heard, the old General Walker hotel had been torn down and the Bertchesgardener Hof was still vacant ...

Man, I miss those days ...

He's told me some wonderful stories!! He moved after high school to attend college here in America. My oldest friend moved to Berlin (she was there two days before the wall came down. She sent me pieces of it. Amazing!!!! She's always after me to come and visit. I can't wait. So much to see.

This is a great thread! I spent the last two summer vacations being a guest of Frau Scharfenberg at the zum Turken. We spent a lot of time exploring all the tunnels and bunkers all over the mountain. There is still quite a bit of stuff buried deep in those woods.

The views from the rooms of the hotel are gorgeous and the breakfast is very good. Frau Scharfenberg is a great lady, she is an excellent host and if she likes you she will sit and talk with you and tell amazing stories.

I have some pictures I can post if nobody objects, I don't want to hijack anybody's thread.
