    Edward "the Chief" Platt

"The Chief" from Get Smart regrettably died by his own hand (suicide). Apparently he had financial problems but does anyone know exactly what they stemmed from, ie- gambling, bad investments, etc.?

What a shame for a seemingly lovely man to take his own life.

Wonder if his money troubles were because of type casting. Get Smart was definitely the lunch box hit of its day. I saw Pollyanna on a TV rerun and it was hard to get used to seeing him as different type person after The Chief was so hard set into my brain.

There was a reason for that.

It's sad so many people get typecast and their careers go no where, I can imagine this did happen with him

I think the key for an actor is to either stick with doing film, or completely dedicate yourself to a career in TV.....with an occasional film role if it happens to come along. Re: Michael Landon as someone who understood the difference between the two mediums and decided to stick with the small screen.

When you are coming into the public's homes every week for 30 - 60 minutes, for years at a time, you are bound to be indentified with a particular role.....and by casting agents as well.

I never understood where somone is lucky enough to even have a job in a trade where 90% of the members are looking for work, they could be unhappy. Spoiled come to mind.

I think his son only recently revealed that it was suicide instead of a heart attack or similar that people believed was the cause for over 30 years.

He had a voice that was much like Lorne Green's.
Don Adams was right, the Chief was an integral part of that show. Kind of the glue that made the show seem believable even as the rest was chaos.

If he suffered from depression, unhappiness is not a controllable thing.
