In recent years Walmart had been opening up in some parts of the country "Walmart Neighborhood Market" which is pretty much a much smaller version of Walmart about the same size of an average supermarket and in some places Walmart just took over an empty building rather than building from scratch. There are pros and cons with the Neighborhood Market. Since they don't sell much in the way of clothes, toys and electronics plus the lack of a bank and McDonalds/Subway inside those places it is less busy and much more quieter. The downside is that a lot of them are not open all night and if you visit a Neighborhood Market in a city where there are other supermarket chains that are part of a union one can expect the protestors even inside the store. When I had visited a Neighborhood Market in Colorado I was actually approached right there inside the store by two Kroger employees begging me not to shop there, how great Kroger is because of the union, how Walmart employes are "evil"..etc. I just ignore them.

Pretty cool. I guess this could also fall under the "Dead Mall Culture" thread.
I figured this was the best place for this. Went to the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum today. My second trip. Well third, we went there drunk one night while it was still a hospital but couldn't get in. LOL The building was started in the 1850's when West Virginia was still Virginia. The left wing was used to house Civil War soldiers. The view thousands first saw.
Attachment 51097
It was designed to originally hold 250 people but in the 20th century it held around 2500. The place was closed in 1994 so it was open for around 140 years. Thousands died inside the walls. The view looking out.

We took the haunted tour this time. The last time we took the historical tour. For a first tour I would take the historical. (I'll explain more later). Sorry, didn't see any ghosts. We do hope to go back soon for one of the overnight sessions.
In this picture is where the criminally insane were held. Interesting that cigarette's were used to calm the patients. They were allowed one an hour. They would line up here and get a smoke from the window. They then had to get in the back of the line and go back through to get it lit. Smoke and do it all over again.

Part of the history is this is the hospital where lobotomies were first used. Many were done here. Many not successful. The historical tour takes you over to the medical building where the morgue, operating rooms and crematory is located. It's where the lobotomies were performed. Below is where the lobotomy recovery room is. (note the cat)

(I guess I have to start a second post)

This was an actual lobotomy pick.
Attachment 51103
There was quite a few suicides in the building. You'll note the door handles. They were designed this way so that one couldn't tie bed spreads to them.
Attachment 51104
In this room was described to us a double suicide. Two guys tied sheets around their necks and just leaned forward.
Attachment 51105
This room is supposedly haunted by two guys. Our guide had electric meters and other items which he said would show supernatural presences but we got nothing.
Attachment 51106
Another was stabbed 15 times in this restroom.
Attachment 51107
In the next part is probably my most favorite part. There are four rooms full of art. Most of this is from later years but some of it is very fascinating. (and sad)

If you can blow up and read the last picture it's pretty interesting IMO.

I would give a lot for this last piece. The guy who created it murdered four people before being found insane and sent here. The beauty of the piece combined with the artist makes it pretty cool IMO.

Lastly is the part they have been able to restore. For years the help had to live on site. The doctors apts have been restored. The money for the tours is being used for upkeep and further restoration.
This part had a real "The Shining" feel to it. Very much like the hotel in the movie.

These are the main stairs. The patients were required to walk the right side and always hold the rails. It's hard to tell in this pic but the stairs on the right side are far more worn. It's an odd feeling walking up them holding the rails.
Attachment 51118
Lastly for those who did not follow the rules........it's hard to tell but you can see the square in the window. There was one on each wall. For those who did not follow the rules, their arms were tied and connected to each wall and around their waist and to the window. There they stood until their allotted punishment time was over.
Attachment 51119
I certainly recommend the tour for anyone interested in this sort of stuff. I find it incredibly interesting. I so wish I would have been able to get in all those years ago when it was still open.
I would love to look around there. Good job on the pics and background! Very interesting.

The following are pictures of what was once the Shadburn Brothers' Business Building, a department of Bona Allen Tannery--as in cowhides. Looks like it might have been constructed of stone or and boasted marble floors. It was abandoned decades ago, restored in the eighties and became the Tannery Restaurant. Our famous local artist painted murals of Historical Buford on the walls inside. Then the building was abandoned again and remains in ruins to this day. I have pics of the murals that I will post later, but here are those of the building's exterior and a glimpse inside .

It's a shame to let it just sit and rot away.![]()
We are hoping someone will restore it. It would make a great museum, but we have a huge arts and entertainment complex which houses our artifacts, so that probably won't happen. Heck, if I had the money and could get the zoning changed, I'd live there.
Here are some of the murals, Historic Buford mansions, top, left to right: Bona Allen Jr.'s Greek Revival mansion, the John Q. Allen mansion. bottom, left to right: Bona Allen Sr.'s Italian Renaissance villa, and the Bowman house, built in 1890.

The town of Varosha is a completely uninhabited resort city on the northern coast of Cyprus. After the Turkish invasion in 1974, Varosha was quickly evacuated and the area stands frozen in time exactly as it was 40 years ago. In its heyday, it was a popular destination that catered to stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Raquel Welch. Today, the abandoned buildings are falling apart, so visitors should visit before all is lost to nature.

A gallery of Monsour Medical Center in Jeanette, PA. Founded in 1952, the hospital eventually closed its doors in the mid-2000's. Demolition finally began in January of this year.

Renowned Death Hag
I remember watching the Ghost Adventures episode about Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum and it got me thinking about another one which was a lot more hard to watch.
I don't know if anyone else watched the Letchworth Village episode but the footage of the way people were treated made me feel sick to my stomach. The reason I'm adding this is because it's another building that nothing was removed from when it was shut and it makes it more eerie when they walk around and see things like dolls and teddies on the ground as well as other things.

I rescued a booth from a closed restaurant that has been empty for about a year. The original owner said he bought the booths in the early 60's. So I feel I rescued a little bit of history from an abandoned building.
Thanks, Cindy for the fix, but I accidently deleted my original post. D'oh.

Words can't convey how much I miss you both. RIP with love.
When I lived in San Diego, my brother and I frequently saw ads for the water park on TV. It looked like such a cool (pun?) place to be. We'd beg our parents to take us to Barstow, but they weren't really keen on the idea. Barstow was a little out of the way for us, and in retrospect, it looked like a rather small water park compared to today.
If it was revamped in the early 2000's, it must not have been a huge restoration as the place appears as if it fell apart a long time ago.
We have an abandoned "water park" (more like a swimming hole) closer to us on Route 66. While people come and visit, it's not used as a swimming area. Despite restoration efforts, the place is crumbling apart and the water really nasty. The whale is an iconic landmark on Route 66, and I always imagine excited kids and parents taking a break from their travels and spending some time at the Blue Whale.

I'm probably going up there in a few weeks, and I'll try to get some pics and update this post on how it looks today.

Somewhat related to this topic but I have to wonder what will become of those Atlantic City casino hotels that have and will close this year ?? The Revel and Showboat are both HUGE and they are now both closed. The way the economy is and with so many places having their own casinos I can only image those now defunct Atlantic City casinos will be abandoned for years.
Hope I am wrong though...but I don't think I will be.

That area must be positively littered with abandoned buildings.

Catskills photos always get me. It is such a lost era. Thanks for sharing those.
Why doesn't someone go into those places and take shit to restore? Like those Coffee Shop chairs in the photos that Madeline posted. I have to think if those chairs were restored they'd be worth a lot of cash. And if not a lot they would be worth something more than zero. Look at all that wood that could be restored and sent to build something else. All the doors that could be reused with a little cleaning, painting, staining. The pipes could be recycled and used on other things. You get the gist. Just wasteful!

Some New York hotels.
I think reclamation is a good idea. I know some people will go in and strip a place. They keep what they can make money on and destroy the rest. If you could bid them low enough it would probably be a money maker. I know a couple that earns a living doing this with barns in Indiana. People buy the wood for paneling. They also get to keep any treasures they find inside. Most of the money has been in the wood, but she has made pretty good money with the advertisement stuff.
I also love reading where they have recycled entire rooms into another house. Castles from England going into parlors in New York. I wish I had the talent to do any of that. The hunt would be incredible.
The Oak Grove Restaurant and Bar in Clearbrook, Virginia ( walking distance from the West Virginia state line ). Apparently this place has been closed since 1974 maybe 1975 and its been sitting there ever since however within the next few weeks the building is slated to be demolished. Popular place back in the day for those who loved to get drunk in West Virginia since this was the very first place they would see once they get into Virginia.

@FreakyAbandoned on Twitter has some great abandoned pictures.
I am only frustrated because I can't follow back to where they got them. I like a little history with my pictures. But it is worth a look. There are also some BS pictures trying to be spooky, but there aren't many.
