Commercials We Hate

I know this is not a "MUSICIAN"...but I also mourn the death (usually from greed) of a good song....
Like when they used the Beatles "Revolution" for a Nike commercial....
The sing that died for me...
"Blister in the Sun"
After it was butchered for a burger commercial....
Sad...so sad....a sensless death to be sure....

I'm sure if Jimi was around and needed the cash he would "be about that".

"I want to break free" by Queen was used in a coke commercial. I still like the song though, so I guess posting it made no sense

"All You Need is Love" was covered by Nada Surf (I think) for a credit card commercial fairly recently...one of my favourite bands, The Features, were told to do it first by the label but they refused because they felt it was for them to a) cover a Beatles song and, more importantly, b) they thought it was wrong to use "All You Need is Love" to advertise a high interest credit card. They ended up getting dropped from the label.

fred dancing with the vacuum cleaner had to be the worse.

led zepplin rock and roll for cadillac did'nt bother me so much. rock and roll and cadillacs go way back together ,kinda complement each other.and, zep probably sold some albums, much like nouveau vague moved some units after they were used in la ink trailers.

How about "Ring of Fire"? Can't remember what product they were advertising (I want to say women's jeans but I'm not 100% sure on that), but I felt sick when I saw that.

I forgot which one also - but Preparation H wanted it for their hemorroid commercial - but Cash's family said no! (true story!)

"Walk the Line" was used in a jeans commercial. I kind of liked the version they used (it wasn't the original), but it always makes me a little sad when good songs are used for commercials.

That's it; don't know why my mind kept insisting it was RoF.

Either way, it just wasn't right, IMO.

Apparently Lisa Marie Presley didn't appreciate them using "Viva Las Vegas" for a Viagra commercial - but since her family doesn't own the rights to the song, there's nothing they can do about it.

"I Walk the Line" was I think Levi's.....nearly made me hurl.....then Queen's "Your My Best Friend" on a car ad nearly gave me diarrhea.

I don't know from what I read about Hendrix money really didn't mean anything to him. And he was one of top moneymakers in the 1960's so I am sure if he was around he wouldn't need the money!

But you never know!!!

Voodoo child "slight return"...the first I feel Heavy Metal song...hated it when Hulk Hogan used it!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a sad thing when the star or the star's estate no longer owns the rights to a song and it ends up being used in a less then flattering way...It is even sadder when the star or their estate owns the rights and allows the songs to be used like that...

LOL! I thought that was a joke the first time I saw the commercial. Everybody has a price. This commercialism is death to the music...RIP

The Violent Femmes got sold out on Wendy's using their song in the commerical and they were pissed! Posted about it on one of the member's websites.

Somehow, I just have a hard time making the jump from the Femmes to Wendy's, you know?

I looked this up recently (probably after seeing one of Target's "Hello Goodbuy" commercials for the billionth time) and it's actually kind of confusing. Jackson now owns half of the publishing rights of most of the songs, essentially -- he had to sell some to pay debts. Sony owns the rest, and they may end up owning more if Jackson doesn't pay up on some loans.

I think it's shitty that he bought the catalog after Paul McCartney told him that owning publishing rights could be really lucrative. But there's no reason to feel bad for Paul; he owns the rights to thousands of songs and still gets his half of the songwriter's royalties. And in some ways it's his own fault (and Lennon's) that he didn't have the rights to begin with.

There's that instrumental "hint" of Sweet Home Alabama for the KFC commercials. But of course that song got "ruined" when it was used for that dreadful Reese Witherspoon movie (and as the title of it also - gag!)

I think there was an advert for Budweiser (I won't drink it cos they stole the name from the Czechs and then told the Czech company they can't use it, even though Budweiser MEANS it is brewed in the style of that part of Czech republic) back in the 90s that used Led Zep's version of When the Levee Breaks.

Yep, not too keen on rampant capitalism.

Paul isn't the one that makes that decision. But if he was, I somehow think we would have seen Beatles song in advertising even earlier. The guy is a great musician/songwriter, but he loves the money.

If he did make the decisions we would be bombarded with Beatles music right now considering he's about to pay his ex some serious money.

No prenup??? I guess we know who's the dumb Beatle now...

Classic songs in commercials

* Chase Bank is using the Rolling Stones' I'm Free. Grrrr!

* Car commercial is using ELO's Hold On Tight. More grrrr!

Don't know who owns the rights to these particular songs.
