Sesame Street.... never liked it, neither did my kids.

well I think we are too damn politically correct these days...my 4 year old nephew refuses to watch Sesame Street because it bores him!! What does he watch instead??? Spongebob Squarepants..yeah thats educational!! most cartoons these days are filled with violence and battles and no redeeming qualities that can see. I don't like Pokemon and allthat crap ....give me classic disney and classic Sesame Street anyday!!! and may I also say Elmo gets on my last damn nerve!!!

yeah, I don't ever remember Cookie monster making me want to binge as a kid but the part where they say kids would just walk away with an adult to their home or wherever kind of creeped me out. You don't want your kids thinking that's ok to do. I think the overall message could use a make over but I wouldn't go too far with it. Anyway, my two cents

Well they do have a point, here is an episode from Sesame Street Season 1.
Here's Dave Chappeles view on the subject... I tend to agree.

I totally feel the same way about Elmo, BTW. Ugh. And now Sesame Street's last 20 minutes of every fricking episode is "Elmo's World!" But my daughter loves it. What can I say? She knows all of the characters and knows that Oscar is Mommy's favorite! (SURPRISE! And I don't even have a mood disorder!!)
That's what's nice about channels like Noggin, Playhouse Disney and Sprout, to name a few. Em is NOT allowed to watch Spongebob and the Cartoon Network? Forget it!! Boomerang is OK by me, but she'd rather watch Noggin when she's allowed TV. www.dailynoggin.com
And I HATE when they show Oscar looking all nice and happy!
Last edited by kelbons; 11-21-2007 at 07:33 AM. Reason: Oscar!
Did I tell you, speaking of claims that Cookie Monster is a bad example for obesity, that I had a 6 year old (about 6) trick-or-treater with an eating disorder? No shitz. I was giving out those mini candy bars, like an inch long, you know, Snickers, 3 Muskateers, etc. I give away a whole handful to each kid. This little girls stops me and says, "I only want one, my mommie doesn't want me to get fat." No. Really. She appeared of normal weight.
I mean, it's Halloween!! Throw the candy out or ration it, like 2 a day or something, but, wow, I didn't even think about what I ate at that age!
This is such a joke....half these kids are watching porn on HBO and playing video games based on death and anniliation....give me a break.....
My son used to watch them all in this era.... I remember that episode. Plus it's a shame, what happened to Northern Calloway. He used to do a voice impression with English accent that sounded a good deal like Richard Burton. I don't know if he did any stage work in addtion to his TV duties, but it seems inadequate that "Sesame Street" and his mental illness/ death are the most he will be remembered for.
I have a three year old, and I've watched a lot of Sesame Street over the last three years. He is starting to lose interest but I still enjoy it (did too much acid in my 20s I guess.) I also watched it in the 70s and do remember David and Maria being together. I also like watching the old 70s animations on YouTube. Remember this weird one about the kid who got lost? http://youtube.com/watch?v=I6NsCvCn2EY
My friends and I in college used to say it was no wonder we were on drugs the way 70s kids TV was (Sid and Marty Kroft, anyone?)
We have DVDs of SIgmund the Sea Monster, Land of the Lost, Lidsville and HR Pufnstuff. My kids, 6 and 2, love them!
So many conflicting stories here....if you go to his memorial it`s sanatized with the " cancer " thing, but I too found something different....
Northern Calloway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Northern J. Calloway (January 22, 1948 â?? January 9, 1990) was an American actor who played David on Sesame Street from 1971 through 1989, and also voiced Muppet characters including Same Sound Brown.
On Sesame Street, his character David was studying to be a lawyer, but when Mr. Hooper died, David took over Hooper's Store.
Calloway left the show about a year before his death. He was suffering from drug addiction and bipolar disorder. On January 9, 1990, Calloway was taken to a psychiatric facility, Stony Lodge Hospital, in Ossining, New York where he went into diabetic shock shortly after his arrival. He was then taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital in North Tarrytown, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 41. He is survived by his wife and their only child.
Unlike Will Lee (Mr. Hooper), no mention of his death was made on Sesame Street.
Calloway was the Leading Player in the original London cast of the musical Pippin.
There are a LOT of teachers who didn't like Sesame Street either for a variety of reasons such as too fast paced for young kids, expecting one to learn from TV and so forth.
One interesting thing about Sesame Street that quite a few people have since forgotten. Even though it aired on PBS since day one, back in the late 60s and early 70s, Sesame Street actually aired on COMMERCIAL TV in places that didn't have PBS.
Our local NBC station in the early 70s aired Sesame Street at 9am right after the Today show and just before Dinah Shore.
Never liked seaseme street. It was one of thoes shows my mom forced me to watch as a kid. They had it on along with Electric Company back to back on PBS , I hated both shows. If i happened to be at my grandmothers house she was kewl about it, Popeye was always on at the same time on a normal channel and shed let me watch Popeye
OMG, thank you Forever-27, ME TOO!!! Funny thing is, when my kids were tiny I tried to make them watch these shows, figuring it would be educational, and they totally resisted too. I'm sorry--the whole thing is just so frickin PC....also very frenetic, jumping from stimulus to stimulus...all these hairy puppets shrieking.....YECH!!!!!!
My kids loved Barney the Dinosaur. Barney gets bashed by the intelligentsia for being simple and wholesome, but it was actually very well done, told a story, had nice songs, and gently imparted timeless lessons. So there!
My kid was too hyper for Sesame Street....she loved Mr. Rogers, and it was the only half and hour out of the day that I had peace......I never tried to get her to watch anything she didn`t want to.....I figured I watched Popeye and Mighty Mouse, and I came out alright.....well, sort of.....
Guess we'll have to dream about him. He died.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Wild
Jack Wild (30 September 1952 â?? 2 March 2006) was an English actor who achieved fame for his roles in both stage and screen productions of the Lionel Bart musical Oliver!. For the latter performance (playing the Artful Dodger), he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the age of 16, but the Oscar went to Jack Albertson for his performance in The Subject Was Roses. Jack Wild appeared with actor Mark Lester in two films: Oliver! (1968) and Melody (1971).
It was at the premiere of the 1968 film version of Oliver! that he met brothers Sid and Marty Krofft, who thought Wild would make a good lead for a show they were developing called H.R. Pufnstuf. Wild starred in this American family TV series that launched in 1969, and also in the movie "Pufnstuf." He also embarked on a recording career, cutting one album for Capitol Records and two for Buddah Records in the early 1970s.
Excessive drinking at an early age derailed Wild's career. Sobering up in 1988, he returned to the big screen in a few minor roles, such as in the 1991 Kevin Costner film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He was also reported to be developing a TV situation comedy with Suzi Quatro around the same time, but those plans never materialised in an actual series. For the most part, though, Wild spent the remainder of his career working in theatre.
Wild died on 2 March 2006, aged 53, after a long battle with oral cancer, which he claims was caused by his alcoholism and smoking. Diagnosed with the disease in 2000, he underwent surgery in July 2004 and had part of his tongue and both vocal cords removed. Because of this surgery, he had lost his speech and had to communicate through his wife. He met wife Clare Harding in a stage production of Cinderella, Jack played one of the ugly step sisters.

Odd. He died of the same thing my dad did.
Just like all of Marty and Sid Krofft shows they were friggin weird , HR Puff N Stuff among other Krofft Superstar shows was so drug laced its sickning ! Lisdville, everything ! But I watched it because it was funny and had a point. Seasme Street wasnt at all my show not because it was or wasnt entertaining , its was so boring. Kids like things that are funny or has a childs point weather its a guy getting hit in the nads with a football or Pee Wee herman funny which I think that show lacked. It were the least bit stimulating I might have liked it. Im in my middle 40s today and I dont have kids, and at this point in my life I doubt I ever will but if I did have children I wouldnt force feed Seaseme Street on them. I was their age at one time and know how drool it really is. If I am concerned with fun educational shows id steer my kids towards old schoolhouse rock of the 70s. That was fun and educational. Its a icon to thoes of us that lived through it. I watched it on NBC i think it was on every saturday morning.
I had no idea David died. He used to be my favorite non-Muppet character on the show. Its shocking to hear what happened to the actor who played him... When looking for more information online, I came across this:
In the October 9th, 1980 issue of Jet magazine, it was reported that Northern was charged with aggravated assault for beating a woman with an iron and then damaging two homes on a naked rampage through a Nashville neighborhood. The police officers claimed that Mr. Calloway beat Mary Stagaman, an official of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, on the head and chest. He was reportedly a guest in her home. It was stated that he beat her so hard with the iron that it tore the iron up. Then Calloway allegedly ran naked down a street for 45 minutes, hollering, smashing windows and breaking into a house.
When the police finally captured him he reportedly said, "I'm David of Sesame Street and they're trying to kill me." He was then taken to a mental hospital for examination.
Supposedly a news crew filmed Calloway being carried off on a gurney while he sang the show's theme song at the top of his hoarse lungs.

I've got to get this movie.
I am 39 and I loved Sesame Street. I do remember the first Gordon.
I have a child that just turned four and so we watch a lot of it still today.
The show is just great for kids. I hope it never goes off the air.
Just watched the Hooper clip! I had never seen it.
I do remember when he died. What a great clip. I started to cry when Bob did.
Thanks for that great clip!
RIP Mr Hooper!

Vamp's King Tut thread got me to thinking about the Sesame Street 'Egyptian Tomb' skit, so I was wondering, what were your favorite Sesame Street skits? If I'm around little ones and we're watching Sesame Street, the new skits seem so lame, I never see the old ones. Here's some I remember:

The most dangerous woman of all is the one who refuses to rely on your sword to save her because she carries her own.

When i was a kid I loved anything with Ernie. My obsession was so bad I even had a full Ernie costume lol. Nothing sadder than going to a costume party and all my little friends were dressed up as a princess or fairy and here I was dressed up as Ernie.
Hey at least you knew what you liked!

Grover was my favorite...anytime he farted on that show I perked up. Oscar the Grouch was also huge...
I liked the one where the Count was a pimp, and his ho's came in from a long night of work...
The one chick said she didn't get any work, but he knew better!! He grabbed her clothes and said "Bitch, give me my money!! I will slap you 1...2....3...3 times!!! AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....
That one was a classic....
I guess the thread of the Yip Yip Aliens could be considered part of this thread too...
I loved it anytime when Kermit was the reporter......."Kermit the frog here......" I wish they still had Kermit on Sesame Street..he was my favorite
It would be great if they ever did a Sesame Street classic show and aired the old shows especially stuff with Big Bird and Mr Hooper.
Wanna see my grandkids?
they actually have the classic Sesame Street dvd's on Amazon.com
I am hoping to get some for the little one when she gets a bit older...also the Electric Company and School House Rock ones....
I will have to check that out SS. I have the schoolhouse rock cd and I want to get the DVD now just in case it isn't sold when my grandson is old enough to watch it. Heck, hubby and I will until then!
Wanna see my grandkids?
I love ALL Sesame Street skits but here's a favorite, the Muppets dancing to Never on a Sunday, a Greek classic:

Vamp that was so cute! The greek subtitles were great.

I love the "Lady Bugs Picinic" even though it's not a skit.
I can't really remember that many of them. I've always liked the one with the train stuck in the snow. They are singing "Through through through - we'll get the train through...." Cookie Monster eats all the snow and saves the day.
Oh I loved Sesame Street!! I had a Big Bird doll that I toted around the house .. he went everywhere with me!! I loved the skits with Muppets, etc .. but I think I loved the animated skits the most .. like someone mentioned the Ladybug Picnic and some skit about Losing the Letter L ..
I also liked the skits where Grover was the waiter and that bald blue guy would always get mad at him for messing up his orders, etc .. hahahahahaha .. such memories!!
Nessa, you start some pretty great threads!!
HAHAHAHAHA!! I found one of the Grover waiter skits .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIzRH...eature=related
