I wish I knew. There's evidence in Steve Hodel's book, but then again, he's still supremely angry with his abusive father, and that's not enough to pin a murder rap on someone.
There's all kinds of theories. What's yours?
I think this one will never be solved. The pictures of this crime scene disturbed me big time. I couldn't eat right for 3 days. Seeing Homicide/Suicide pictures get to me worse then seeing the real thing.
I don't know who killed HER! but I can tell you who killed the Black Dahlia movie..that Josh Hartnett. that guy couldn't act his way out of a wet tissue. geez!!!!
Any self respecting Ellroy fan knows it was Georgie Tilden.....
Anyone have any links to those crime scene photos?
if you go on the dearly departed tours scotts go some pretty grotesque ones other wise google image search it.
I read Steve Hodel's book and he makes a damn good case his father did it!!
THose crime scene pic's are extreme!!! Scott shows them on the tour!!

as a courtesy heres a link but there are others out there as well
I heard about this years and years ago but it still turns my stomach. There's something so barbaric about the whole thing. Not that murders aren't barbaric in general, but there's something about this one that just..I don't know! It makes me really sick.
I also agree with whomever said J. Hartnett ruined the movie. The whole thing played out like a lame soap opera..
Someone earlier mentioned that atrocity of a movie they put out with that Hartnett person in it. BLAH! Biggest waste of three hours I've ever committed myself to with ten bucks!
If you're going to title a movie around a REAL murder case, then at least make the damn movie have something to do WITH the murder case!
That movie sucked sooo bad! What a disappointment. The Hodel book was pretty compelling but it's hard to get past the obvious anger he has for his father and it dilutes his credibility.
The movie was terrible but one thing that was great was the ad campaign the studio ran in the l.a times the week before the release.
They gave out a condensed copy of the actual evening EXTRA that was run in the days after the dahlia was murdered.
It looks like the real deal.
Ugh, the boyfriend and I wasted our time watching that movie! It sucked big time! Josh Hartnett was horrible too! Sadly I will agree with others on here, the murder will never be solved. The crime scene pics are just the most horrific thing I've seen.
I believe whoever did it was EXTREMELY angry at poor Elizabeth Short. She was tortured and probably alive most of the time.
I think it was someone Elisabeth knew...she knew a lot of people...and that the killer was pretty dam smart.
I don't believe it was Hodel...probably someone who skated under the radar...someome new in her life. Maybe someone obsessed with her...but quietly.
Maybe a cop...or someone in the biz there. You are right though. It will never be solved.

What are everyone's opinion of the Black Dahlia case? I find it amazing that this case, and many others, stay unsolved after all these years! This is a fascinating case and makes you nuts trying to understand it all.
Here are some neat websites I found regarding the case....some have pretty graphic pictures so be warned if you are squeamish.

Here is a cool site. http://www.blackdahliasolution.org/
I believe it solves the case. The LAPD had him and questioned him but let him go. When they realized their mistake, it was too late. He was looooong gone.
Ed Burns, aka "Maurice", the Hollywood abortionist and Dahlia $upporter did it.

On the internet you can be anything you want.
It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid.

Did anyone see the movie......yuck! talk about changing the facts....
The poor girl had a gential defect that made it impossible for sexual contact but from the movie she became a porn star/lesbian.
Shame the poor girl died such a horrific death - i mean sawn in half - blood drained so she looked like a shop maniquin from a distance & a jokers smile knifed onto her face.... I hope she died instantly...
She's buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, CA. I never visited her grave - but I went there quite a few times over the years to visit a friend who is also buried there.
There's also a thread about The Black Dahlia here:

I always look at that one close up shot of her face a just try to understand what happened...her eyes are open that always gets to me....like did she just fade away...or was she fighting...poor Beth Short. My grandma says she saw her at the hollywood cantine allot. And she did always wear black and was very beautiful.
In one of Sylvia Brownes books, (Psychic) she does a whole chapter on the last day of Beth. Im moving, or Id go pull it out. But, I just wanted to add that in there. I believe she said it was one of Beth's friends father. And that the wife knew about it. It was an unique read at that.

Very funny!!! I secretly think O.J. did it too. Hodell's book was compelling (I met him at a couple of book signings) but he definately has anger issues with his dad. Have been to the site where her body was found. It is now someone's front lawn. We pulled up in a large bus and about 20 people got out. Several neighbors came out and stared (who wouldn't, it was a residential area). A couple of people even laid down on the approximate spot (no Scott was not on the tour). Hey JeffD and Ms. K, as of 6 months ago I now live in Riverside county, Desert Hot Springs. Haven't been to any of the local cemetries yet but definately want to see Sinatra.
This case has always facinated me. There is so much misinformation out there that much is hard to discern. It was someone who did the same thing, probably close to exact, to another woman. One of Beth's friends was murdered a couple of weeks before her disappearance in a bathtub. I have always not been able to help to think that it was someone important, like maybe John Huston or someone, and their was a huge cover-up. The whole thing just reeks of it...
When I log onto Scott's site, I tend to look to the right, because that pic of her in two pieces gives me the tremors...
I read Steve Hodel's book and while he makes a good case that his father was the murderer, I never felt that he had the "smoking gun." I wondered where in the house the murder and clean up took place and how he did it with the family being there too. Maybe I missed something...
I mapped her mother's address in Medford Mass as stated in the inquest, which is included on the first link you list here. I live currently 3 1/2 miles from it. I'm going to drive by this weekend and see if I can take a picture!
Cool! thank you for the links. I can't begin to imagine the horror of her last few days. *shudder*

I read The Black Dahlia Avenger. It was written by a guy who thinks his dad did it. Pretty strong stuff. BTW, the movie was based on a FICTION book. It is mostly fiction. So all that business about sex movies is garbage. And THAT wasn't even in that book. Dumb.
The movie was garbage. It seemed like the whole murder was just a sub-story within the movie. They need to make another one. I see police thiller. two dectives tracing the killer. The dahalia would be shown in flash backs. I would get Dita Von Teese to play her. She wouldnt have to even speak.
im actually afraid to look at the photographs! are they that bad?
Along with Lizzie Borden, this is my favorite unsolved crime ever. I also think the site http://www.blackdahliasolution.org/ pretty much solves the case.
Personally, I don't belive in Steve Hodell's theory about his daddy dearest being the killer. It has way too many holes in it which make it unbelivable. At least to me.

OK, lowblow, I could have lived without that....
I read Hodel's book (along with all the others), and I'm not convinced. The pictures his dad kept in his diary, supposedly of Elizabeth Short, were NOT Elizabeth Short--they look nothing like her. Since Hodel's entire theory is built around those two photos, that kind of shoots him down right out of the gate. Plus, the author implicates people such as internationally famous artist Man Ray and director John Huston as friends and/or accomplices, HUH? He's nuts, this guy...
Mary Pacios, childhood friend of Elizabeth Short, wrote a really good book about her, "Childhood Shadows: The Hidden Story of the Black Dahlia Murder." From this book, one gets a really, really good idea of what Short was like as a person prior to her moving to California. However, Pacios comes up with none other than Orson Welles as her main suspect by the end of the book, which I find patently ridiculous!
The book "Severed," by John Gilmore, is considered by most to be the authoritative reference on this topic. Gilmore's suspect, Jack Wilson, may or may not have committed the murder, but his intimate knowledge of the details of the crime assure us that he was either present during the crime, or knew the killer intimately. I think Gilmore's research and conclusions are the closest we'll come to ever knowing who committed this horrendous crime.
I will have to find that book, Jack, thank you for the recommendation! I picked up Hodel's book from the library a few days ago and I'm on chapter 4. I agree, the first picture, especially, does _not_ look like Elizabeth Short at all. The second picture is closer, but not quite. Obviously, his dad was "into" women with Elizabeth Short's coloring, but I think he's grasping at straws to make the connection- so far.
When the weather gets a little better, I'd love to take a picture of E.S.'s mother house, one town over from mine! The address is listed in the inquest.
I'd love to see what the family home looks like now--hopefully it's still there!
Here's a link to the book on Amazon. Looks like David Lynch has purchased the rights to this--which means a MUCH better movie (than that last pitiful "Black Dahlia" attempt) might be coming along soon!

I always wonder what killed her, was it the blunt force trauma to the head or the slash to the face ...I always hear two differant theories about cause of death..also man that girl was lookin at whoever killed her her eyes are open as can be!! I also always look at her hands and the way they are almost fisted...do you guys think she was kept alive for those 5 days and tortured ?? The mourge shots fascinate me.
