Ward Bond

Ward Bond was probably the only man who was self conscious of the size of his ass. I heard that in his contract he was to be filmed only from the front or above the hips. I would have liked to see him and Broderick Crawford duke it out.

I bet Ward Bond would have been too nice to fight with Broderick Crawford, he was known for his likeable personality on screen and off. That's one of the reasons why John Wayne took him under his wing. That and I think they went to school together. But anyway, it would have been a hell of a fight.

Ward Bond was in almost every John Wayne movie made in the 50's and 60's because they were friends offscreen. He was tall like Wayne and had a low voice. He usually played the sidekick or second in command to Wayne's good guy/captain. He's also in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE with Jimmy Steward and Donna Reed. He's the one that helps set up the honeymoon scene in the empty house with the cab driver that is played by the guy that played Dwayne Hickman's father in the tv show, Dobie Gillis. Can't remember his name, tho.

I consider his performance in John Fords 'The Searchers' to be his best, he was very funny in that. He is also involved in an interesting Urban Myth where it says he was supposed to meet Johnny Horton in Dallas on November 5th 1960 but died of a heartattack in his hotelroom and Horton died in a car crash the same day.

He was a best friend to Clark Gable. They both enjoyed hunting together. Bond is in many of Gable's movies, if only a bit part at times. He was the bus driver in It Happened One Night. He also was in Gone With the Wind. He played a Yankee soldier who came to arrest Rhett Butler at the women's house when the men went to defend Scarlett's honor, when Ashley the Puke was shot. Does that help ring a bell?

Ward Bond died on November 5, 1960 of a heart attack. His wife Maisie was with him at the time of his death. Legendary director John Ford, accompanied by Harry Carey, Jr. and Ken Curtis (Ford's son-in-law and later, Festus on Gunsmoke) left the filming of Two Rode Together and flew to Dallas, Texas to escort both Bonds back to Los Angeles.

Funeral services were held at the Field Photo Home, run by Ford. Curtis sang "And He Was There" and Carey sang "The Mormon Hymn." John Wayne gave a brief eulogy.

His absence from Wagon Train was never explained on the show.

His butt wasn't that big. Kinda nice and round, if ya ask me. He should have been more concerned about his belly. LOL (I still love his acting.)

My grandmother for years kept a scrapbook and one of the things he kept was a copy of the local paper here the night Bond died. It was actually the same time, well actually around the same time when Clark Gable died. Actually the whole paper was full of "future deaths"'. Among the stories that was featured...

*Johnny Horton ( I think it was his obit too, but not sure )

*Jim Reeves new tune is getting some buzz.

*Joan Davis is to star in a new sitcom for CBS about a space-woman onboard a space plane ( Space Shuttle? ).

*Joesph Kearns ( Dennis the Menace ) recently spent thousands to install in his home what is to believe the worlds larges t organ.

The front page was a huge pic of Patsy Cline stretched out on a couch taking a break before she was to hit the road once again.

Sadly all of these people would be dead within a few years.

John Ford always thought Bond's preoccupation with the size of his backside was hilarious, and in the films he directed, Ford always found a way to eventually get at least one shot of it filling the screen, usually when Bond was getting on a horse....they are there if you know what to look for.

Bond was furious - but well....Ford was Ford.

As far as I know that maybe the only pic. I think he over did it but I am not into looking at a mans butt. I just found it odd in an intervire with John Ford he made mention of it.

True, it's probably one of the reasons for his heart failure.

I have this really vivid memory of hearing of his death on the radio. I was sitting in the car with my father and younger sister while my mom was in the grocery store. Come to think of it, I believe Ward Bond was the first celebrity death I actually recall hearing of.

I had my life look at it. She called it an Apple Butt and said it was big for a man's ass. After taking a good look myself, yep he did have a big ass. A good Asset for some.

Johnny Horton died on the same day as Bond, actually he was going to meet Bond that day about being in some episodes of Wagon Train. They died within maybe an hour of each other. Horton was killed by a drunk driver.

As I have written earlier in this thread, It is just an urban myth that they were gonna meet. They did however die on the same day.
