I don't think she had anything at all to gain from her relationship with Jim, she already had a successful career and isn't the kind of gal who would feel the dire need for a man to complete her. She truly loved him for who he was, an intelligent and gentle soul, wounded so very many times. This was something she could recognize, even if others did not.
