Thread: Do You Collect Anything?

I try and stay away from Cd's as much as I can. Ill go out and buy used LP's then burn them to cd's and never play them again. Curtis Mayfield, The Who, The Yardbirds, Grateful Dead, Ike and Tina Turner, ect.

I look close at the vinyl, it needs to be in good to near perfect shape before I buy it. Most I ever spent on one record was 1500 bucks for a Jefferson Airplane, Takes Off LP ( Version One )

I still have 3 jumbo size bin-bags (garbage sacks to you guys!) full of cassettes and I refuse to get rid of them.....sure they are muffled and squeaky and take an hour to rewind...but I adore them....plus when I got bored with listening to them I'd jam Scotch tape in the hole at the bottom and me and my friends would record ourselves goofing around singing and generally being crazy kids...I treasure those ones!

I have tons and tons of LPs that I really want to rip and put on my hard drive so I can transfer the songs to a CD. However, I get a lot of "noise" (scratches)...do you get this too? What software do you use?

We don't do Bratz here and I strongly discourage Barbie as well. Bratz, hookers much?

Finn, my daughter had a real serious Thomas phase. We have a lot of DVDs, the train layout, all sorts of stuff. She's onto Sponge Bob now, and Dora still holds a special place in her heart.

I collect Ocean liner memorabilia like Andrea Doria stuff, Titanic stuff is virtually untouchable, some 1964/65 worlds fair stuff, some Hindenburg stuff and the controversial board game "Ghettopoly" lol-unopened.
Oh, there is wone quirky object that I collected, in 1995 we were in the car and heard on the radio that Renuzit air fresheners were being pulled from supermarket shelves because the photographer for the company put his dick amongst the flowers for the label on the "Fresh cut Flowers scent" . We made a B-line right for the nearest supermarket and grabbed the last can.

Great Renuzit story. Never heard it before.
The only Titanic things I've seen from the ship are recoverd pieces of coal which used
to go for like around $20. I know there's a special display a limited edition type thing
about the coal that comes out of England. Haven't looked it up in a while.

Don't ask me why, but I collect compasses. All kinds. I probably have 40 or so. I know we have GPS and stuff like that, but I just love finding a new compass!

I have a brass one from London that's beautiful with a sundial. Instead of West on the dial its actually says London. lol North, South, East, London.

    What Do You Collect ?

Are there things you collect ? I love vintage items, especially things from the 50's/60's (but was born in the 70's).

I have a vast assortment of items. I am into vintage wristwatches and have a collection. I wear them instead of just putting them in a case just to look at. 50's and 60's Bulovas and Hamiltons are some of my favorite makes.

What do I collect? Old magazines, table lamps and small pieces of furniture from the '60s and back, record albums, 45s, Magnavox products up to about 1975, small kitchen appliances, books, cassette tapes, vacuum cleaners, and no, I don't have any space for any of it. Also Tupperware, and clocks. I can think of more later, I'm sure.

I love collecting oddball items that deal with history.
1- A envelope from Admiral Byrds Antarctic Base with a typewritten notation on the bottom which says "This letter delayed 1 year due to bad weather."
2- A envelope with a letter with a rubber stamp that says "Mail delayed train late."
3-A envelope that was sent on board the USS Arrgone which was attacked at Pearl Harbor.
4-A envelope cancelled on board the USS Constitution.
5- When you cross the international date line in the military they give you a card that says you now belong to the Domain of the Golden Dragon.
They have the name of the ship and the guy it belongs to. I have one from a guy who was on the USS Benevolence which was a hospital ship
which was there in the harbor during the surrender of Japan and it also participated in Operation Crossroads which was the atomic testing at
    Bikini atoll.
6- During one of the moon missions one of the astronauts brought a silver lead pencil and lead. When he got back to Earth he wrote out the story on typewritten
index cards and there was a little square box with which that pencil he marked a "X" with lead from that pencil he brought to the moon.
7- A small coin from the Franklin Mint Society which contained silver that was placed on board I believe it was Apollo 14 melted down with other silver and
made into collector coins for it's members.
8- A coin that was made from the propeller they melted from Admiral Deweys ship the USS Olympia.
9- A envelope that was flown on the Space Shuttles 8th mission.

    Antiques

Anyone else collect them? I am into the 1950's - early 60's. What I really want is this for my retro kitchen:

    DROOL!!!!!! That is beautiful!

I collect from so many time periods that my house looks a little strange.

I have that set in a blue actually. I didn't have to pay for it though, got it from my great aunt's place.

I love antiques. My kitchen is full of antique dishes (I have a complete set of fire king jadeite for every day use, and along with my grandmother's wedding china, I have some rose colored "Sharon" depression glass place settings. I have an old full size antique radio, I use as a make up stand in my bedroom, and numerous other old things. My goal in life is to have a completely antique place; a 40's room, 30's room, 50's room... etc.

OMGOSH I LOVE IT! The one I posted is on ebay for $869.00. Jane, you are so lucky to have one! I don't often see them in antique stores, but when I do they are sooo expensive. I wish I had my grandparents table. But at the time, I wasn't 'in' to antiques.

    Here's another thing I love:

I have a yellow one in my bedroom. It's so handy because it doesn't get lost, unlike my cordless phones. I also have a powder blue one in my guest room, and a red push button in my son's room. Looking for a blue rotary 'wall' phone for my kitchen!

Those red chairs in the pic are from Target. They are called Lucy. We bought 4 about 10 years ago.

We have the same table my DH's parents had when he was a kid.

That is about as far as I go with 50's things.

I really like Mission style although our house is pretty much filled with craptiques.

Ha! I'll have to look for them, I didn't know they sold them at Target. I would really like to get some 'real' atomic furniture from the 50's. Don't feel bad Pwem, I have plenty of craptiques to go along with my antiques!

I love antiques! Most of my furniture is technically not antique (100 years), but more in the vintage category.

I inherited my grandparents furniture, purchased new in the mid-1930's. Generally, I gravitate towards furniture/kitchenware/decor items from the 30's - 50's. My childhood home was decorated in 60s modern (think Dansk, walnut, Scandinavian furniture and a few atomic-looking items for good measure) and I never liked how my mom decorated, so I draw the line at 60's furniture.

My house is a happy mix of well-loved, well-used furniture of my grandparents and lots of re-purposed items - I use a 40's breadbox as a kitchen utensil holder, my grandparents' cedar chest is a side table in my family room, my mom's 1950's green Philco radio is proudly displayed alongside a 40's electric fan atop a Pottery Barn tv cabinet.

    That table set is fabulous!

Talk about bring back memories, I was born in 1952. I also love the vintage aprons and table cloths from back then. My Mom wore a apron every day, and I do too from time to time, and she starched and ironed those old colorful table cloths. Love your post!

I have odd collections of stuff.

    - I collect DC Comics stuff. I've loved it since I was a kid and discovered the Super Friends cartoon.
    - I also have a humongloid collection of Garbage Pail Kids stuff. Boxes of it.
-Somehow I've accumulated a doll collection. I'm not into dolls whatsoever, but I love dolls having to do with sitcoms. (Lucy, The Nanny, Jeannie, Bewitched) or old 70s stuff. I had to tell people, "Please stop. While I love this stuff, I don't want to be the guy who has the dolls!"
-I have zillions of crates of albums. I started years ago and now I just have crates here that I should probably ebay some of them.
-I also collect Buddhas. I'm an atheist, but I love Buddhas. Oh and cheesy Catholic pictures of the virgin mary, jesus, etc.... the kind that are metallic and glow in the dark. Dunno why.
    - Doh, and I also have quite a bit of Peter Pan stuff. Of course since you know who also had a thing for Peter Pan stuff, we try to keep that on the down low. *cough*mj*cough*

I collect dolls and toys from the 70's and 80's. I especially like older Fisher Price toys. I wouldn't necessarily say I collect them, but I have a huge amount of true crime books. I don't buy the books with the intention of collecting them, I just never get rid of any of them.
